Strike: We Were Not Used By APC – ASUU

The Academic Staff
Union of Universities, ASUU, has denied insinuation in
some quarters that its over five month strike has
political undertone, saying it has never been used
and cannot be used by any political party to achieve
its goal.
The union also explained that its workings are devoid
of tribe or religious sentiments in the pursuit of its
aims and objectives.
ASUU Calabar zone made this clarification in a
statement issued in Umuahia, Abia State yesterday,
by its coordinator, Dr. Charlie Ononuju in reaction to
a certain publication which accused the union of
being used by the opposition All Progressives
Congress (APC).
Ononuju described the publication as "entirely false
and misleading [as] the union is not and cannot be
influenced by any political party. The union
embarked this national strike to secure the furniture
education of the Nigerian child".
According to the don, "It has nothing to do with
politics, religion or where one comes from as being
canvassed. The union is democratic and all issues
and decisions are democratically resolved and taken.
"The zone urges the group [that made the
publication] to jettison the propaganda and call on all
well-meaning Nigerians to condemn the blackmail.
"The members and leaders of the union shall
continue to think and act in the interest of the people
of Nigeria, irrespective of ethnic, religious and
regional affiliation", he said.
