“There Is No Business Like Church Business” – Popular Nigerian Pastor

A Nigerian entrepreneur has appeared on Dragon's
Den, a reality television programme in which
budding entrepreneurs get three minutes to pitch
their business ideas to five multi-millionaires willing
to invest their own cash.
The eloquent young man who introduced himself as
Pastor Jonah, wanted two hundred and fifty thousand
pounds to start a new Pentecostal church, and
promised returns of 500% within the first three
years.
Producers of the series described the recently filmed
episode as featuring the most incredible idea ever
brought to the show.
They said of the Nigerian entrepreneur, "He was very
confident and very smartly dressed in an Armani
suit. He was charismatic and extremely
knowledgeable of the Bible, and he appeared to have
really done his research."
His opening line was, "Brothers and sister, the Lord
has brought me here today to tell you that there is no
business like church business."
In the episode which will air next season, the
entrepreneur defends his business case by
presenting data gathered from churches in Nigeria
where he plans to setup his own church.
In a tense moment when he is being grilled by Theo
Paphitis, he asks the Dragons a rhetorical question,
"How many of you own private jets? You don't want
to miss this one," a member of the production crew
told us. She however declined to comment on the
outcome of the pitch, saying instead, "Let's just say,
the Dragons know a good investment when they see
one."

Church of England To Bless Gay Couples

The Archbishops of Canterbury and York yesterday
published the Report of the House of Bishops
Working Group on Human Sexuality.
And according to it, gay couples should be allowed to
have their relationships blessed in church.
DailyMail reports that the report, written by former
civil servant Sir Joseph Pilling and a team of senior
churchmen and women, was published seven
months after the Church first indicated it is looking
at 'accommodations' for same-sex couples and four
months after the Archbishop of Canterbury, the Most
Reverend Justin Welby, told Church leaders that 'we
must accept there is a revolution in the area of
sexuality.'
It signals an end to the Church's longstanding
insistence that gay relationships are sinful and less
worthy than heterosexual marriage.
And may now open the way for a reversal of the
CofE's opposition to same-sex marriage and the
eventual appointment of actively homosexual priests
and bishops
Archbishop Welby said yesterday that bishops will
now 'consider the report and decide how such a
process might best be shaped.'

NASU TO JOIN ASUU STRIKE

Non academic employees in the universities are
warming up for industrial action as a fall out of the
resolution of the ASUU strike.
They took the decision during the delegates
conference in Owerri under the banner of the Non
Academic Staff Union ((NASU). The communique
was signed by Deputy President/Chairman of the
Universities Trade Group, Comrade Sunday
Adeyemi and the Deputy General Secretary,
Comrade F.J Ajayi.
The union said it would go on strike the moment a
negative action is directed at its members outside
the original agreement reached in the 2009
Federal Government NASU agreement.
NASU also expressed worry that its 2009
agreement with the Federal Government was due
for review since June, 2012, noting that the non-
implementation of the full content of the FG/
University based Union 2009 agreement is a
political strategy aimed at mitigating early review
of the agreement.
The Union urged President Goodluck Jonathan to
put necessary machinery in motion to commence
the upward review of the agreement within the
next three months.
The Council in session also warned the Federal
Government not to create more crisis it cannot
manage in the process of resolving the ASUU
strike, adding that some of its members, including
NAAT and SSANU who were formerly members of
the Interim Monitoring Committee set up by the
Federal Government in October 23, 2013 to
confirm the initial payment made to the
Universities by the Federal Government, have been
excluded.
The Union also sympathised with the family of the
late Professor Festus Iyayi who it noted had been in
the struggle for a positive change in the nation's
education.

Julius Agwu Sues Etisalat For N100million

Remember a couple of days ago when I told you
how ace comedian, Julius Agwu blamed
telecommunications giant – Etisalat, for poor
customer representation?? Well, Julius Agwu has
taken a step forward.
The veteran
comedian has
now dragged the telecommunications company to
court, suing them for the sum of N100million for
jobs lost, contact lost, for the inconveniences, and
for being mistreated by Etisalat staff.
Find below the statement from his lawyer, Festus
Keyamo.
We are solicitors to Mr. Julius Agwu, one of
Nigeria's most sought after entertainers
(hereinafter referred to as "our client") and on
whose behalf we write.
Our client is the owner of the Etisalat GSM phone
number 08189555555, which he uses as his
business line. On the 8th of October, 2013, our
client travelled out of the country and returned on
the 17th of the same month. Upon his return, he
tried severally to make calls from the aforestated
GSM line but same could not connect. Not only
could he not make calls, he also could not receive
calls on the said GSM line. This continued for some
days until he got a message that his line had been
blocked by the network provider.
Sequel to the above message, our client promptly
visited your Abuja office at Hilton to report the
matter. He was attended to by one Miss Joan, who
informed him that somebody swapped his line.
After our client successfully answered the security
questions put to him, he was informed that his line
had been restored, but the credit balance on the
line was not returned.
Surprisingly, our client's aforestated line was
blocked again after he left your said Abuja office.
Once again our client visited your office at the local
wing of the Murtala Mohammed International
Airport Ikeja, Lagos to lodge a complaint, but
painfully, nothing was done about it.
However, after sometime, our client was invited for
a meeting at your head office in Lagos on the 14th
of November, 2013 which he duly honoured.
Present at the meeting (in addition to the officials
of your organization) was Mr. Mobolaji Okusaga,
the Managing Director of The Quadrant Company,
in his capacity as media agents/managers for
Etisalat Nigeria.
At the end of the meeting, our client was told for
the umpteenth time that they would get back to
him, which they again failed to do.
LOSS OF BUSINESS OPPORTUNITIES
It cannot be over emphasized that your actions of
unlawfully blocking and/or swapping our client's
line occasioned loss of business opportunities to
him. As you are aware, our client as one of the
most sought after Nigerian entertainers needs his
phone line to be easily accessible to keep his
business going. It therefore goes without saying
that our client has lost some business
opportunities as a result of your actions.
TAKE NOTICE that we have our client's firm
instruction to demand and hereby demand the
sum of N100,000,000.00 (One Hundred Million
Naira) as compensation for the loss of business
opportunities and the inconvenience caused our
client by reason of your unlawful and unjustified
blocking and/or swapping of our client's Etisalat
GSM phone line.
TAKE FURTHER NOTICE that in the event that you
fail, refuse or neglect to accede to our above stated
demand within seven (7) days from the receipt of
this letter, we shall be compelled to set in motion
against you, all legal machineries necessary to
obtain legal remedy for our client.
Thank you.
Yours sincerely,
FESTUS KEYAMO, ESQ.

FG threatens to sack ASUU members by December 4th

Supervisory minister of Education, Nyesom Wike has
threatened members of the Academic Staff Union of
Universities with sack if they refuse to resume by
December 4th.
Addressing journalists in Abuja, Wike said, "Vice-
chancellors should ensure that staff who resume for
work are provided with the enabling environment for
academic and allied activities.
"Any academic employee who fails to resume on or
before December 4, 2013 automatically ceases to be
an employee of the institution.
"Vice-chancellors are also directed to advertise
vacancies (internal and external) in their institutions.
"The National Universities Commission is hereby
directed to monitor the compliance of these
directives by the various institutions."
He said government was forced to take the decision
in the best interest of the country after being faced
with outrageous new demands from ASUU.
Wike said, "To start with, the agreement you (ASUU)
said the Federal Government should comply with,
was it the AGF that signed it? It was signed by the
Federal Ministry of Education led by the Permanent
Secretary. The AGF was not even part of the
negotiation.
"We have made every effort to see that students go
back to their schools. Each time government made
frantic effort, you would hear one reason or the other
(from ASUU). For us, we cannot continue to see this
thing happens. We will continue to make sure that
we stick to all we have agreed to do.
"If you cannot believe Mr. President, then who would
you discuss with again? Mr. President cannot sit
down for 13 hours having a discussion and at the end
of the day the only thing you can do is to attach
some new conditions.
"I don't think that is acceptable to us. All we have
promised them, we are going to do; we won't go
back. But bringing new conditions, we don't think it
is favourable. We don't think it is for the good of this
country."
Wike said government had made many concessions
to ASUU, including providing N10 billion extra
allowances in addition to N30 billion already
released.
"We all agreed. ASUU said we should put the
resolution down. That was done and signed by the
permanent secretary," he said.
"The Federal Government has met all its
commitments and obligations with respect to the
2009 Agreement. We appeal to all stakeholders to
appreciate the position of the government which is in
the best interest of our dear country."
"As a responsible government, we cannot allow the
continuous closure of our public universities for this
length of time as this poses danger to the education
system, the future of our youths and national
development", he added.

PHOTOS: Floating City With Schools, Hospital, Parks, Airport for its 50,000 Residents

Seasick sufferers look away now. A Florida-
based firm has designed a floating city called
Freedom Ship that would spend its entire
time at sea.
The vessel is a
mile long, 25-
storeys-high and has enough room for 50,000
permanent residents.
It features schools, hospitals, art galleries, shops,
parks, an aquarium, casino and even an art gallery
as well as an airport on the roof and a docking bay
at the rear.
Designed by the Florida-based Freedom Ship
International (FSI), the floating city is set to
cost $10 billion and weigh 2.7 million tonnes
– making it too large to ever dock. The ship
would spend the whole time at sea, circling
the globe once every two years, powered by
solar and wave energy
The designs also include a shopping centre
covering 1.7 million square foot. Designed by
Freedom Ship International (FSI), the vessel is set
to cost $10 billion and would weigh 2.7 million
tonnes – meaning it would be too big to ever enter
a port.
This means the ocean community would spend the
whole time at sea, circling the globe twice a year.
During this time, FSI claim the ship would spend
70 per cent offshore major cities and 30 per cent
moving between countries.
The route would take the ship from the east coast
of the U.S across the Atlantic Ocean into Europe,
passing Italy before looping back and sailing
around Africa, across to Australia, heading north
into Asia before spending the end of the year on
the west coast of America and into South America.
In addition to the permanent residents, the
Freedom Ship would also have room for an extra
30,000 daily visitors, 20,000 crew and 10,000
overnight guests.

vice-president of Freedom Ship International said:
"The Freedom Ship will be the largest vessel ever

the global economy in the last few years hasn't
been too inviting for unproven progressive projects

During a press briefing in Abuja this morning, the
acting Minister of Education, Nyesom Wike told
journalist that the Federal Government has given the
Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) one
week ultimatum to call off the ongoing strike.
Or else what? ASUU execs and President Jonathan
were supposed to meet this week but the meeting is
yet to hold. The ASUU strike began July 1, almost 5
months later, no resolution in sight. Sad!

of the various universities and the National
Universities Commissions (NUC) have been directed
to ensure compliance of this directive.

Pro Chancellors defy ASUU, order immediate reopening of universities

The Committee of Pro-Chancellors of Federal
Universities on Tuesday called for the immediate re-
opening of all shut down universities across the
country.
This is contained in a communiqué signed by the
committee's Chairman, Prof. Kimse Okoko, released
in Abuja on Tuesday.
The communiqué was issued at the end of the
committee's meeting to discuss the lingering strike
by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU)
and other issues affecting the Nigerian University
System.
It stated that the call for the re-opening of the
universities was unanimously agreed by all Pro-
chancellors in the interest of the country.
The communique directed all the Vice-Chancellors to
comply with the decision.
It commended the efforts by the Federal Government
to address the major issues that led to the strike and
lauded the personal intervention of President
Goodluck Jonathan in the resolution of the dispute.
It also expressed satisfaction with the outcome of the
referendum conducted in all the branches of ASUU
nationwide, which voted 60-40 in favour of the
suspension of the ongoing strike.
The communique explained that the committee's
decision was based on the negative impact the strike
had had on the university system, students and the
parents.
It, however, appealed for the understanding from the
leadership and members of ASUU to ensure speedy
restoration of academic activities on campuses.

Photos: Mysterious healing river appears in Enugu state

A River with 'healing
powers' (according to the people of the community)
mysteriously appeared in a community in Enugu
State called Nachi, in Udi LGA. The river, now called
Orimiri Jordan (River Jordan) was first seen on Nov.
11th. Continue..
According to reports, a Fulani Herdsmen first spotted
the river and ran to people in the community to alert
them of the discovery. He told them that as he
passed the area with his herd of cattle, he heard a
strange noise, and when he turned back, he saw the
river that wasn't there previously.
The community went to look for themselves and
discovered that the water has healing powers. But
the traditional ruler of Nachi community said
something slightly different. He said the river
appears every 20 to 30 years but dries up after a few
weeks so it wasn't anything new.
An elder in the community explained:
"We noticed that after some years, the water will
form a stream there and would disappear in few
weeks. If such happens, we will be fetching water
there. However, women who are menstruating
and evil people don't go there. We never heard
about healing power of the River until this recent
appearance of the River.
"The last time it appeared was in 1992, and at
that time, it just formed a small stream, which
later disappeared. It has never been as large as
this. This is all I know, we have never known
about its healing power, this is the first time we
are hearing about healing, I don't whether it is
true".
Meanwhile, Okada people are already making money
from this as they charge passengers between N500
to N1,000 to transport them from a junction to the
Healing River as hundreds visit the place every day
to get some of the water which quite a lot of people
testify has healing powers.

FG Condemns ASUU’s Conditions For Calling Off Strike

The Federal
Government,
yesterday, condemned the new conditions which
Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, insists
must be met before it could call off its five-month-
old strike.
Members of the union had on Friday met in Kano
for the National Executive Council, NEC, which they
made as secretive as possible before
communicating their resolution to the federal
government whose response have now dashed the
hopes of university students who were expecting
the strike to be called off this week.
The three conditions the union gave the FG were
payment of four months salaries, which
accumulated during the period of the strike;
immediate implementation of the N1.2 trillion
offered by the government to public universities,
starting with the release of N100 billion this year
and the balance of N1.1 trillion to be spread over
five years from 2014.
The union also demanded that the salary arrears
must not be paid in piecemeal.
Supervising Minister of Education, Nyesom Wike,
condemned the new conditions but assured that he
would present them before President Goodluck
Jonathan.

Angola reportedly bans Islam. How can they do that though?

Shouldn't there be freedom of religion to every
citizen of a country, so how can Angola do this? If
reports are to be believed then the Southern African
country has become the first country in the world to
ban the Islamic religion. According to multiple
reports coming from Angola, Mosques in the country
have been closed down and some even destroyed.
The Guardian reports that on November 22, the
Angolan Minister of Culture Rosa Cruz e Silva said
that "the process of legalization of Islam has not
been approved by the Ministry of Justice and Human
Rights and so their mosques would be closed until
further notice."
Does a religion need to be legalized? The minister
also said that the closing of mosques was done in a
move to stop so-called 'illegal religious sects.' Under
new laws in Angola, many religious sects have
suddenly become criminal.
Yesterday November 24, Angola President José
Eduardo dos Santos said that the country is working
toward putting an end to Islamic influence in Angola
once and for all while the Governor of Luanda, Bento
Bento, said that "radical" Muslims are not welcome
in the country and that the Angolan government will
not be legalizing mosques or other places of worship
for Muslims.

Fake miracle scandal scatters church in Uyo

A large scale scandal has broken out in a church
known as the City of Truth (a.k.a Holy Ghost
Embassy), Uyo, Akwa Ibom State as the founder and
general overseer of the church, Bishop Israel Usoro,
has been accused by his pastors of engaging in fake
instant healing and false prophecies.
But Bishop Usoro has denied the allegation, claiming
he never knew whether those who claim to have
been instantly healed of their ailments during the
church's tarry nights or similar programmes were
real or pretenders.
Saturday Sun learnt that Usoro, whose church is
situated at No 12, Paul Bassey Street, Uyo, began to
experiment the fake instant healing after a Ghanaian
pastor, one David Amousou came in as a guest
preacher earlier in the year and arranged with some
boys to act as sick people to receive instant cure
after being prayed for.
A letter of resignation written by one of the elders
and former protocol officer of the Church, Mr
Idorenyin Aquaisua, to Bishop Usoro and other key
officials of the church, a copy of which was made
available to Saturday Sun chronicled with dates a
series of fake miracles the bishop had performed by
paying people, sometimes as little as N2000 to come
and pose as if they were mad, blind, infirm or
afflicted by evil spirits.
"It bears recall that I have served God in your Church,
City of Truth Chapel Int'l, for well over seven (7)
years now. Within this period, I stand vindicated
before God, my conscience, and man that I have been
selfless, diligent, truthful, faithful and committed in
my services to God. Since 2006 till date, I have held
very many sensitive positions in the church with
enduring legacies.
"At a time when the Church was almost grounded by
severe moral crisis occasioned by your activities that
generated intense feeling of distrust in your wife, I
was persuaded, out of trust by you and some faithful
members of the church then, to head the Protocol
Unit in your office in 2010 so as to encourage and
give you the needed support to continue your
ministerial duties with minimal distraction,"
Aquaisua wrote.
"I came to know you closely as a prophet who
professed total dependence on God. Therefore, until
certain events unfolded recently, I had no cause to
doubt your prophetic grace. When news first came to
me early June 2013 that the regular instant healing
miracles that were taking place during the Tuesday
Power Night programme in the church were stage-
managed, I almost beat up the person who brought
the news.
"On Tuesday, August 13, 2013, I took an independent
step to verify the stories and this step brought me
face to face with the truth. That evening during the
regular Power Night programme, a clean-shaven
young man dressed in torn T-shirt and dragged along
by another young man was intercepted as they were
about to enter the church and interrogated in the
studio room.
"During interrogation, both the young man and his
accomplice, who earlier claimed that the young man
he was dragging into church was mad, confessed to
me (with Elders Idorenyin Mfon, Effiong Usoro and
Evangelists Anietie Walter and Harrison Eke as
witnesses) that he 'was NOT MAD and that he was
arranged to dress like and to act as a madman in the
church for you to 'deliver' him so as to boost the faith
of members in your anointing and increase the
membership of your church'. They said what they
were doing was a new method of 'evangelism' which
you have since embraced", he further alleged.
But in an interview with Saturday Sun in his church,
Bishop Usoro refuted the allegations of fake or false
instant miracle claiming that they were peddled by
some former officers of the church who are no longer
members of the church.
He likened them to Lucifer who was thrown out of
heaven. "Since then, he can never say any good thing
about heaven."
Usoro denied ever delivering the supposedly mad
man on Tuesday, August 13, 2013, even though he
admitted seeing such a person in church that night.
"I saw two young men and one said the other was
partially mad. I told them to be coming to church
because if I don't see anything about you, I can't heal
you. It is not the work of the flesh. It is only when you
are under the unction of the holy spirit; that you can
do all these things. That's all."
He showed Saturday Sun two other patients, a lady
with goitre and a young man supposed to be
mentally deranged whose conditions he said had
been improving since they were brought by their
relatives to the church
Usoro admitted being invited by the SSS to answer
questions on the fake miracle saga and claimed that
he was acquitted after the security operatives heard
his own side of the story.

ASUU STRIKE: We Will Not Call Off The Strike Until…..

The
Academic
Staff Union of Universities has said it will not
suspend its ongoing strike until the four
months salaries owed its members are paid.
The union also wants the immediate
implementation of the N1.2tn offer by the Federal
Government to public universities, starting with
the release of N100bn this year. The balance of
N1.1tn is to be spread over five years from 2014.
These were some of the resolutions reached by
members of the National Executive Council of the
union who converged on Kano on Friday to
deliberate on whether to call off the over four-
month-old industrial action or not.
A source, who was privy to the resolutions reached
during the President Goodluck Jonathan – ASUU
leadership meeting three weeks ago, told The
PUNCH on Sunday, that the fresh demands were
some of the issues to be tabled before Jonathan by
the leadership during their next meeting. A date
for the meeting is yet to be fixed.
According to the source, a strong commitment to
two demands, among other pending issues, must
be obtained from the President before the
industrial action will be called off by the union.
He said, "The issue now is on trust and we do not
want a situation where promises will not be kept.
The authorities have failed us in the past and we
do not want a repeat of that.
"That was why we decided at the NEC meeting that
the government should pay us the arrears of
salaries being owed us since we started the strike
on July1 before the strike can be called off. The
salaries should not be paid piecemeal.
"We also insist that the Federal Government
should start the implementation of the offer made
to us when we met the President some weeks ago.
"For instance, the N100bn he (Jonathan) agreed to
inject into the university system in 2013 should be
released to the universities immediately. So, we
decided that before the strike could be called off,
these two conditions and others must be met not
by promises but by real action."
The NEC members, who met behind closed doors
at the Bayero University, Kano, were said to have
reviewed the reports of the various university
congresses on the strike.
Our source, who did not want his name in print,
added that the death of a former National
President of ASUU, Prof. Festus Iyayi, was
discussed at the NEC meeting.
Iyayi, a University of Benin lecturer, died in an auto
accident involving the convoy of the Kogi State
Governor, Idris Wada and an ASUU vehicle, on his
way to Kano for the meeting. The union's
National Welfare Officer, Dr. Ngozi Ilo, was injured.
Our source said the accident "almost led to the
discontinuation of the ongoing negotiation with the
Federal Government.
He added, "Some members expressed the belief
that he (Iyayi) was killed by the government and
therefore argued that the ongoing negotiation
should be called off. Tempers rose but some
members argued that the President should be
respected because he had created the record of
being the first Nigerian leader to meet with the
leadership of ASUU on the issue of making the
nation's university system better. They also argued
that students and parents should be considered."
It was also learnt that after arguments for and
against, about 60 per cent of the members of the
NEC voted in favour of the discontinuation of the
strike while the remaining 40 per cent voted no.
But it was gathered that the NEC members
unanimously agreed that before the strike could be
called off, the leadership should ask the
government to pay the four-month salary arrears
being owed university teachers while the offer
made by the government should be implemented
immediately.
A key component of the agreement reached by
both ASUU and the Federal Government when the
President led the government team was that
government would inject N1.2tn into public
universities.
The government also agreed that the N1.2tn
would be domiciled at the Central Bank of Nigeria
to show its commitment to the agreement.
The money is expected to be released on quarterly
basis to the universities so that there won't be any
problem about implementing the deal.
The National Universities Commission and the
Trade Union Congress will be the joint guarantors
of the agreement while the Minister of Education
will be the implementing officer. The government
also agreed to revamp public universities by
ensuring that all the issues that always lead to
strike were dealt with once and for all.
A majority of the chapters of the union had agreed
to the suspension of the strike following the fresh
commitment the leadership of ASUU obtained from
the government.
ASUU National President, Dr. Nassir Fagge, did not
pick the several calls made to his telephone line by
one of our correspondents on Sunday to confirm
the fresh demands.
The University of Lagos chapter ASUU Chairman,
Dr. Karo Ogbinaka, and his counterpart in the
Lagos State University, Dr. Adekunle Idris, also
refused to divulge information on the outcome of
the NEC meeting.
ASUU had embarked on the strike to protest
against the failure of the government to
implement the agreement they signed in 2009.
The pact largely centered on better funding of the
universities, a declaration of a state of emergency
in tertiary education, better wages and payment
of earned allowances to lecturers.
It had suspended the NEC meeting penultimate
week following Iyayi's death.

Muslim inventions that shaped the modern world By Olivia Sterns for CNN

London, England (CNN) -- Think of the origins of that
staple of modern life, the cup of coffee, and Italy
often springs to mind.
But in fact, Yemen is where the ubiquitous brew has
its true origins.
Along with the first university, and even the
toothbrush, it is among surprising Muslim inventions
that have shaped the world we live in today.
The origins of these fundamental ideas and objects --
the basis of everything from the bicycle to musical
scales -- are the focus of "1001 Inventions," a book
celebrating "the forgotten" history of 1,000 years of
Muslim heritage.
"There's a hole in our knowledge, we leap frog from
the Renaissance to the Greeks," professor Salim al-
Hassani, Chairman of the Foundation for Science,
Technology and Civilisation, and editor of the book
told CNN.
"1001 Inventions" is now an exhibition at London's
Science Museum. Hassani hopes the exhibition will
highlight the contributions of non-Western cultures --
like the Muslim empire that once covered Spain and
Portugal, Southern Italy and stretched as far as parts
of China -- to present day civilization.
In 9th century Spain, Muslim inventor Abbas ibn
Firnas designed a flying machine -- hundreds of years
before da Vinci drew plans of his own.
Here Hassani shares his top 10 outstanding Muslim
inventions:
1. Surgery
Around the year 1,000, the celebrated doctor Al
Zahrawi published a 1,500 page illustrated
encyclopedia of surgery that was used in Europe as a
medical reference for the next 500 years. Among his
many inventions, Zahrawi discovered the use of
dissolving cat gut to stitch wounds -- beforehand a
second surgery had to be performed to remove
sutures. He also reportedly performed the first
caesarean operation and created the first pair of
forceps.
2. Coffee
Now the Western world's drink du jour, coffee was
first brewed in Yemen around the 9th century. In its
earliest days, coffee helped Sufis stay up during late
nights of devotion. Later brought to Cairo by a group
of students, the coffee buzz soon caught on around
the empire. By the 13th century it reached Turkey,
but not until the 16th century did the beans start
boiling in Europe, brought to Italy by a Venetian
trader.
3. Flying machine
"Abbas ibn Firnas was the first person to make a real
attempt to construct a flying machine and fly," said
Hassani. In the 9th century he designed a winged
apparatus, roughly resembling a bird costume. In his
most famous trial near Cordoba in Spain, Firnas flew
upward for a few moments, before falling to the
ground and partially breaking his back. His designs
would undoubtedly have been an inspiration for
famed Italian artist and inventor Leonardo da Vinci's
hundreds of years later, said Hassani.
4. University
In 859 a young princess named Fatima al-Firhi
founded the first degree-granting university in Fez,
Morocco. Her sister Miriam founded an adjacent
mosque and together the complex became the al-
Qarawiyyin Mosque and University. Still operating
almost 1,200 years later, Hassani says he hopes the
center will remind people that learning is at the core
of the Islamic tradition and that the story of the al-
Firhi sisters will inspire young Muslim women around
the world today.
5. Algebra
The word algebra comes from the title of a Persian
mathematician's famous 9th century treatise "Kitab
al-Jabr Wa l-Mugabala" which translates roughly as
"The Book of Reasoning and Balancing." Built on the
roots of Greek and Hindu systems, the new algebraic
order was a unifying system for rational numbers,
irrational numbers and geometrical magnitudes. The
same mathematician, Al-Khwarizmi, was also the first
to introduce the concept of raising a number to a
power.
6. Optics
"Many of the most important advances in the study
of optics come from the Muslim world," says Hassani.
Around the year 1000 Ibn al-Haitham proved that
humans see objects by light reflecting off of them
and entering the eye, dismissing Euclid and
Ptolemy's theories that light was emitted from the
eye itself. This great Muslim physicist also discovered
the camera obscura phenomenon, which explains
how the eye sees images upright due to the
connection between the optic nerve and the brain.
7. Music
Muslim musicians have had a profound impact on
Europe, dating back to Charlemagne tried to
compete with the music of Baghdad and Cordoba,
according to Hassani. Among many instruments that
arrived in Europe through the Middle East are the
lute and the rahab, an ancestor of the violin. Modern
musical scales are also said to derive from the Arabic
alphabet.
8. Toothbrush
According to Hassani, the Prophet Mohammed
popularized the use of the first toothbrush in around
600. Using a twig from the Meswak tree, he cleaned
his teeth and freshened his breath. Substances
similar to Meswak are used in modern toothpaste.
9. The crank
Many of the basics of modern automatics were first
put to use in the Muslim world, including the
revolutionary crank-connecting rod system. By
converting rotary motion to linear motion, the crank
enables the lifting of heavy objects with relative
ease. This technology, discovered by Al-Jazari in the
12th century, exploded across the globe, leading to
everything from the bicycle to the internal
combustion engine.
10. Hospitals
"Hospitals as we know them today, with wards and
teaching centers, come from 9th century Egypt,"
explained Hassani. The first such medical center was
the Ahmad ibn Tulun Hospital, founded in 872 in
Cairo. Tulun hospital provided free care for anyone
who needed it -- a policy based on the Muslim
tradition of caring for all who are sick. From Cairo,
such hospitals spread around the Muslim world.

ASUU directs members to ignore Adekunle Ajasin University resumption directive

The Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko
branch of the Academic Staff Union of Universities
(ASUU) has called on its members to ignore a
directive from the Registrar of the University calling
for the resumption of academic activities in the
school.
The Registrar of the university, R.B. Olotu had asked
the students to resume on November 25th for the
second semester of the 2012/2013 session.
The statement read, "All students of Adekunle Ajasin
University, Akungba-Akoko, Ondo State, are hereby
informed that academic activities of the second
semester of 2012/2013 session truncated as a result
of the ASUU national strike are to resume on Monday,
25th November, 2013 with the continuation of
registration on the university portal."
It also stated that classes would resume on the 2nd
of December.
However the ASUU chapter at the school said it would
not forego the "struggle", until the National
Executive Council officially called off the strike.
ASUU chapter chairman, Busuyi Mekusi, said ASUU,
Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko branch,
wishes to dissociate itself from the purported
resumption of academic activities in the university,
as its members are still part of the ongoing national
strike by the union.
"Members should, therefore, disregard any pull to
abandon the struggle, and be steadfast until the
present position is reviewed by NEC. The union also
wants to make it abundantly clear that it would resist
every tyrannical propensity to intimidate and harass
its members."

2 Men Arrested For Giving ‘Free Hugs’ In Saudi Arabia

Two men were
arrested by
religious state police in Saudi Arabia's capital of
Riyadh for giving "free hugs" to strangers
Wednesday.
The country's ultra-conservative police, tasked with
enforcing the government's Sharia law, arrested
the duo for engaging in "exotic practices" and
seized their "free hugs" banner, according to a
Huffington Post translation of Arabic language
newspaper Al Hayat.
One of the arrested, Abdulrahman al-Khayyal,
posted a tweet earlier that day saying he would
like to give free hugs in Tahliya, a bustling
shopping street. He then took to the streets with a
friend and a placard that read "free hugs," the
Independent reported. (The action is part of a
social movement in which strangers offer others
public embraces.)
After signing a pledge promising not to repeat the
act, the two men were released. However, al-
Khayyal told the Independent he would continue to
give out free hugs because he saw it as an act of
charity.
The outlet points out that the 21-year-old may
have been inspired by a viral YouTube video (see
below) that shows a man named Bandar al-Suwaid
giving free hugs to young men in the same area
the day before.
As the Agence France-Presse notes, not everyone
was moved by the concept: "Today it's one hug,
tomorrow it's a free kiss, and the next day it'll be
free s*x!" one person tweeted.

Gunmen invade Ekiti hospital, demand new born babies

Five gunmen, suspected to be ritualists on Sunday
invaded the government hospital in Ado-Ekiti,
demanding for new born babies.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the
gunmen who were said to be numbering about five,
arrived at the hospital at about 1:00 a.m. demanding
for a day old babies, and beating up staff who could
not give satisfactory answer.
A senior health officer, who pleaded anonymity, said
that the armed men invaded the hospital located
along Irona area at about 1:00 a.m. and suddenly
began molesting medical officials on night duty.
According to the officer, the invaders, who were fully
armed, demanded for the whereabouts of a particular
baby, said to have been delivered earlier in the day.
a baby: wanted by gunmen
"They got more annoyed when they were told that no
baby was available in the hospital as at the time they
came, it angered then the more and they went
berserk,'' the officer said.
This development, NAN learnt angered the men who
beat up the hospital staff and injured some of them.
"As a senior person on duty, I tried to convince them
that all new born babies have been discharged from
the centre in the last couple of days, but they refused
to be convinced.
"This angered them the more and they descended on
the staff beating us, some of them were busy
ransacking the place in search of babies,'' the source
said.
When contacted, the Chairman of Ado Local
Government, Mr Tope Olanipekun confirmed the
incident, saying "this is a new twist to crime in the
area''.
Olanipekun, who claimed to have visited the hospital
to see things for himself, described the incident as
"highest point of callousness on the part of the
perpetrators.''
"As I speak, the incident actually happened and I
want to assure you that we are taking step to
forestall a recurrence.''
The chairman said that he had already ordered that
night duty be suspended in all the hospitals in the
council, pending when tight security measures,
which would include fencing of all health centres will
be done.
The State Police Public Relations Officer, Mr Victor
Babayemi, ASP, who was surprised at the
development, however said the incident was yet to
be reported to the police command.

Pastor accused of $10 million Oil bloc fraud

Joseph Olarenwaju Obembe, a former head of the
Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN) and the
presiding Bishop of Elshaddai Bible Church in
Dolphin Estate, Lagos State has been accused by his
business partners of acting criminally in a crude oil
deal. The bishop's accusers allege that the cleric
sought to cheat them out of a huge amount of cash
after some prospective investors offered $9 million
for an oil deal.
SaharaReporters learnt that the Bishop was
specifically accused of declaring only $1 million to his
partners instead of $10 million that was the actual
offer by the investors. In addition, the bishop's
accusers allege that he also insisted that 10% of the
$1 million he fraudulently declared as the total
receipts must be paid as tithe to his church.
In December 2010, Mr. Obembe filed a lawsuit in
which he accused his partners of forgery and altering
the letter-head of Elshaddai Petroleum Limited with
intent to dupe his company to the tune of N100
million. However, his witnesses at the trial as well as
other partners contradicted his claims, stating that
the Bishop was himself responsible for any fraud that
happened in their business relationship.
Testifying last Wednesday before Justice Okunnu of
the Lagos State High Court in Ikeja, a defense
witness, Julius Sajuyigbe, asserted that the Bishop's
greed and intent to defraud broke their relationship.
Helyn Aninye, a witness called by Bishop Obembe,
had in her earlier testimony portrayed the bishop as
the traitor whose greed caused the collapse of the
business relationship.
Court testimonies have painted the picture that the
now soured business journey started in 2006, when
the partners, who include, Mr. Remi Folorunsho,
Pastor Olagunju, Bishop Obembe and Mr. Sajuyigbe
signed an agreement to pursue an oil bloc.
Witnesses disclosed that the partners agreed to use
Bishop Obembe's Elshaddai Petroleum Limited as the
bidding firm for an oil bloc as it was too late to
incorporate another company. in addition, the
partners decided that Bishop Obembe's spiritual
profile might help their hunt for an oil bloc.
Mr. Sajuyigbe said he facilitated the meeting of all
the partners, adding that Ms. Aninye was the last
partner to join, bringing the number of partners to
five.
The partners appeared set to flourish when they won
their bid for the oil bloc marked '294′ in the Niger
Delta for $51 million. Unable to finance the business,
the partners went searching for investors in their oil
bloc.
Ms. Aninye told the court that all partners were made
directors in the El Shaddai Petroleum Company. She
added that the firm had not filed all the relevant
forms to be registered before the partnership began
crumbling.
She also disclosed that the original owners of
Elshaddai Petroleum Limited were Bishop Obembe,
his wife and kids, but that after the successful bid for
an oil bloc, the new partners were to become the new
owners and directors of the registered oil company to
continue their new business.
A defense witness, Mr. Sajuyigbe, said the partners
agreed that Bishop Obembe should remain as
chairman of the company, while Mr. Folorunsho
began serving as the Chief Executive Officer. Ms.
Aninye, who is a lawyer, served as company
secretary and legal adviser. The witness said he
served as Finance Director while Pastor Olagunju had
no special function but served as liaison for the team
abroad because he is based outside the country.
Several witnesses testified that some investors
showed interest in the oil bloc and offered to fund the
business. However, the partners agreed to accept
one of the prospective investors, IGI, introduced by
the bishop.
However, Mr. Sajuyigbe, who corroborated testimony
of Ms. Aninye alleged that Bishop Obembe concealed
the actual value of IGI's investment, which was $10
million. He told the court that the bishop declared
only $1 million to the other partners, and demanded
10% of the $1 million as tithe to his church.
The witness said they later discovered from reliable
sources that the actual amount offered by IGI was $
10 million. He revealed that the discovery led to a rift
in the partnership. He told the court that, when the
partners confronted Bishop Obembe over his fraud,
the cleric described it as "a mistake of the mind and
not of the body."
A lawyer familiar with their partnership told
SaharaReporters that the other partners opened a
new domiciliary account and advised IGI to pay its
investment there. He added that the partners
informed the bishop of their move, which was
designed to checkmate his fraud. A reportedly
furious Bishop Obembe then decided to file a lawsuit
accusing the other partners of "forgery" of letter-
head to in order to enter into correspondence and for
the purpose of opening a new account.
Further hearing was adjourned till January 29, 2014.

Empress Njamah Says She Can’t Marry a Poor Man!

Nollywood actress Empress Njamah told Showbizplus
in a recent interview her views on men and settling
down.
Read below:
What's your dream man like?
Let me tell you something about life, I will not come
here today and tell you I want a God-fearing man, he
must be tall, he must be this, he must be that.
I have once said something about what I want in a
man, and then the person I fell in love with was the
exact opposite. You cannot dictate feelings, you
cannot dictate emotions, that's why there's
something called love at first sight, you cannot tell.
I'm not going to clone a man that I want. There is this
thing called chemistry, once you see it, you know it. I
won't come here and tell you that he must be tall and
he must have six packs, I'm not crazy about that, so
basically what I want in a man are what I'll probably
see at that point and what'll attract me at that point.
So you are saying you can settle for any man whether
rich or poor?
I'm not going to tell you what I want. But you get into
an expensive shop to pick up something because you
can afford it.
You see something you can afford, then you buy it
but if you cannot afford it, take a walk.
The goods are for someone that can afford it, that's
the best I can tell you. I will not settle for less, my
sister and that's the truth.
People come and tell you all sort of lies and want to
praise themselves and say "I can marry a poor man"
the poor man no know wetin him see, abeg!
I dey tell una say I am a real person, we all have been
through tough times, we all have paid our dues one
way or the other. So no poor man must get close to
me.
Those who know the worth pay the dues.

Governor Sule Lamido’s Sons Arrested By EFCC Over N10 BILLION Laundering

Sons of Jigawa State governor Alhaji Sule
Lamido were yesterday [November 14,
Thursday] arrested by the Economic and
Financial Crimes Commission. They were
apprehended in Kano in the evening, and
were subsequently moved to the EFCC
headquarters in Abuja on Friday morning,
where they are being interrogated by a team
of detectives.
According to
inside sources, Aminu and Mustapha Lamido arrest
follows the investigation that commenced in
December 2012. It will be recalled that Aminu Sule
Lamido was on his way to Cairo, Egypt when he
was arrested at the Mallam Aminu Kano Airport
for failing to declare the $50,000 he had on him.
Despite his prosecution, further investigations into
the matter uncovered a web of money laundering.
Billions of naira from Jigawa state government
accounts were funnelled into the accounts of
companies run by the Jigawa state governor and
his two sons.
Till date, over N10billion have reportedly been
transferred from Jigawa state government
accounts into the accounts in which Sule Lamido
and his two sons have interest from 2007.
In the course of investigation, the EFCC
have traced the transfers to a number of
companies where Lamido and sons are directors
and signatories to the account. The companies
are Bamaina Alluminium Limited, Bamaina
Holdings Limited, Bamaina Company Nigeria
Limited, Rawda Integrated Services Limited,
Speeds International Limited and Saby Integrated
Nigeria Limited.
The account of these companies received huge
cash inflow between 2007 and 2013, a period that
coincide with the tenure of Sule Lamido as
governor of Jigawa state.
More details later.

Jobless Husband Flees As Wife Gives Birth To Triplets In Enugu

The joy of Mrs. Ifeoma Odo of Ebo Umuabor in
Nsukka Local Government Area, Enugu State, could
turn to tears after her husband absconded on
hearing that she was in labour for triplets.
Odo told the
News Agency
of Nigeria in Nsukka on Friday that her husband,
Mr. John-Patrick Odo, disappeared when he realised
she would give birth to triplets.
"It's been seven days since I put to bed, yet I have
not seen my husband. Several attempts to reach
him through his telephone have failed as he
switched off his mobile phone.
"I know he has no job but that should not be the
reason for him to abandon me and the babies," she
said of her husband of three years.
Odo appealed to the government and good spirited
individuals to come to the aid of the triplets, saying
they required a lot of care to survive having been
born pre-term.
"I will be very grateful to all who offer financial help
to me and my babies at this difficult moment," she
said.

ASUU Formal president kinsmen Demand N50bn compensation from Kogi Gov

Iyayi's Kinsmen Demand N50bn
Compensation From Kogi Gov
The traditional
ruler of
Ugbegunland, Edo State, hometown of former
President of Academic Staff Union of Universities,
ASUU, Professor. Festus Iyayi, who died in an auto
crash, Wednesday on Lokoja-Abuja road, HRM,
Samuel Obade I, Onojie of Ugbegunland and his
people, are demanding a compensation of N50
billion to be paid to the immediate family of the
late professor by the Kogi State governor, Captain
Idris Wada.
In a letter dated November 13, the community
wrote to the Executive Secretary, National Human
Rights Commission, Abuja, on the death of its son
in an automobile accident with the governor's
security details, calling for a thorough investigation
for Nigerians to know the actual cause of Iyayi's
death.
Prof Iyayi was on his way to Kano, in the company
of other members of ASUU, for the union's National
Executive Council(NEC) meeting, where members
were expected to discuss the recent offer by
President Jonathan in a bid to call off the four-
month old strike, but a car in the convoy of Kogi
State governor Idris Wada ran into their vehicle.
Iyayi lost his life in the accident, while two other
members of ASUU, the National Welfare Officer, Dr
Ngozi Ilo and Dr Anthoni Emina were injured.

ASUU Leaders Chase Governor of Kogi State From Hospital

Angry leaders of the Academic Staff Union of Universities
allegedly chased away the Governor of Kogi State, Captain
Idris Wada (retd.) from the emergency ward of the Lokoja
General Hospital on Tuesday. Wada had gone to the
hospital to visit their injured colleague, Dr. Ngozi Ilo, and
commiserate with them over the death of their former
President, Prof. Festus Iyayi, in an accident involving his
convoy and an ASUU vehicle on Tuesday.
The ASUU leaders accused him of trying to make a
political gain out of their misfortune.
Lagos State University chapter of the union, Dr. Adekunle
Idris, confirmed that Wada was chased out of the
emergency ward, and said, "We are surprised that a state
governor could resort to telling lies because contrary to the
claim by his spokesperson that he showed care towards our
colleagues, he did not. Somebody that did not stop after his
convoy killed our leader; somebody that did not come to the
hospital until some minutes to 5pm(on Tuesday) after the
accident that happened around 11am could not be said to be
caring."
"That was why we chased him out of the emergency ward
of the hospital and we also prevented him from seeing Prof.
Iyayi's corpse in the mortuary.
"We are not happy with the fact that he came very late to
the hospital and the fact that when he came, his press crew
attempted to take photograph and video record of Dr. Ilo,
who is our national welfare secretary. We stopped them
because that was the height of insensitivity."
"Somebody that could not provide us with an ambulance
cannot be said to be caring. We had to call UNIBEN for an
ambulance that took Ilo to the UNIBEN Teaching Hospital
while our colleagues from the Federal University, Lokoja,
with the assistance of the vice-chancellor, gave us the
ambulance that was used to convey the remains of Prof.
Iyayi to Benin."

US Classifies Boko Harm, Ansaru As Foreign Terrorist Organizations

The United States, yesterday, formally declared war on
Boko Haram, classifying the terror group believed to
have ties with al-Qaeda, a Foreign Terrorist
Organization (FTO).
A statement issued by the US State Department,
yesterday, in Washington, said the US government was
invoking Section 219 of the Immigration and
Nationality Act, as amended, and section 1(b) of
Executive Order 13224 to designate Boko Haram and
Ansaru as Foreign Terrorist Organizations (FTOs).
The Federal Government which had hitherto mounted
pressure on the US against taking such action, also
issued a statement through Nigeria's Ambassador to the
US to explain why it accepted the US classification of
Boko Haram and Ansaru as terrorist groups.
According to Ambassador Ade Adefuye, the decision to
declare Boko Haram and Ansaru as Foreign Terrorist
Organizations, was taken at a meeting at the State
Department on Friday, November 8, 2013, and they
took immediate steps to inform the authorities in
Abuja.
"For the past couple of months, this embassy
successfully countered pressures from religious
organizations and politicians both in Nigeria and the US
on the American government to make this declaration.
Our belief then was that the twin-track approach of
enforcement and dialogue adopted by the Nigerian
Government would make Boko Haram see reason.
Regrettably, the continued intransigence of the sect
compelled our government to proscribe the organization
on June 4, 2013," Adefuye said.
The Federal government said its earlier opposition of
the designation of Boko Haram and Ansaru as FTOs by
the US was "because of the wider implication and
exposure to stringent measures that such actions will
impose on ordinary Nigerians". But the State
Department said its assistance to Nigeria stresses the
importance of protecting civilians and ensuring that
human rights are respected. It said designation of these
groups as FTOs demonstrates U.S. support for the
Nigerian people's fight against Boko Haram and
Ansaru.
Ambassador Adefuye said: "We have taken note of the
statement by host authorities that the latest action is
meant to enhance further co-operation between Nigeria
and the US in tackling this issue. The Government of
Nigeria remains committed to bringing to an end the
atrocities of Boko Haram in collaboration with our
foreign partners."
Activities of the radical Islamic sects have become
worrisome to the United States and other countries that
are uncomfortable with Boko Haram, which has been
responsible for the death of thousands of civilians and
security personnel across religious divides in North-East
and central Nigeria since it commenced its campaign in
2002. Also operating in Nigeria, Ansaru is a Boko
Haram splinter faction that earlier in 2013 kidnapped
and executed seven international construction workers.
Diplomatic sources said the designation of Boko Haram
and Ansaru as FTOs is "an important and appropriate
step, but just a step in a comprehensive approach by the
Nigerian government to counter these groups through a
combination of law enforcement, political, and
development efforts, as well as military engagement, to
help root out violent extremism."

ASUU Postpones National Meeting To January Over The Death Of Former President

The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, has postponed its National Executive Council (NEC) meeting, which was supposed to hold today, due to the loss of one of the prominent members of the union, Professor Festus Iyayi, who died in an auto crash on Lokoja-Abuja Expressway, on his way to the Kano, yesterday, for the union's meeting.

The decision to call off or continue the four months old strike embarked upon by the University lecturers was expected to be made at the meeting which would have held today but for Iyayi's death.

The union called for the meeting after fresh negotiations with the president, where the government was said to have shown commitment to ending the strike by improving on earlier offers
The meeting will now hold on January 15 2014.

‘I’ll wait for Mr. Right even if it takes 100 years’ – Karen Igho

Here is an interview she did with THENETNG. read
below..
Meeting with Karen Igho at Radisson Blu Hotel was
quite fun and interesting. Dressed in a black dress,
charming, cheerful and friendly, the sexy actress, OAP
and model was quite outspoken about many issues. In
the course of our chat, the former BBA winner opened
up about career, finding the right man someday and
most interestingly, her twitter feud with actress Yvonne
Nelson.
Karen what have you been up to lately?
I just got back from Calabar and I would be going
back there soon for the carnival. I would be there for a
week along with some of the past BBA contestants. I'm
still going through my movie script which would start
shooting on December 5. You know I got an
appearance on Tinsel. I'm still doing radio and
modeling too. I'm an ambassador for GoTV, I've been
doing interviews, shoots; basically I have been up and
down.
You seem like a very busy person with TV, radio,
modeling. How do you handle all of that?
When you are young, that is when you go hard so that
later in life, you can sit back and enjoy all you have
worked for. I like to think of myself as being
multitalented. I am also into music. I have a song with
my brother who is with a record label called MMM,
owned by Mikel Obi. I have a cousin, Igho who is a
video director and rapper. I also have singing twin
cousins, Aaron and Sharon known as Addiction. It's
such a big family and it's just fun you know. One
minute I'm an actress, the next I'm a musician. I
believe I can do all things if only I'm taught, because
I'm a fast learner.
How is acting working out for you?
I was born to be an actress. To be honest when you are
an actress, you don't plan it, it just comes naturally. I
used to act dramas with my cousins and I studied a bit
of Theatre Arts, so, that's basically it.
After BBA, what have you done with your prize
money?
My money, I kept it oh. I saved it and I'm still saving
and taking care of my family, friends and my grandma.
That's why am still in the industry so that I can make
more money.
What's the major lesson you learnt in the Big
Brother house?
For me, it was a wonderful experience but I must say
the main lesson was that when it comes to money and
friendship you have to be very careful because you
never know who really likes you for who you are.
People can do all sorts of things for fame and money
but it still wouldn't stop me from being who I am. But
what I now understand is that BBA was a game and in
as much as it was a game, people got hurt but it's about
time you let it go. I mean this is 2013 and all that was
in the past.
Have there been such experiences in your life where
you have been betrayed by a friend?
Yes, there have been lots of times like that. I'm that
kind of person that doesn't beg for friendship. It is
when you have lots of friends that your gist gets
everywhere. You don't really hear a lot about Karen. I
don't really give people the chance to say things about
me because I have been hurt before and so, I just study
people before I let them in. I only let you know what I
want you to know.
Do you ever get bothered about stories published
about you?
People have to understand that I am only human. Most
of the stories you read about me are lies and when it's
the truth you would know because when lies are said or
printed about me I just call my manager and we take
them to court. It's not like before where you can
publish lies and get away with it. Now, journalists need
to be careful about what they are saying and how they
are saying it. I am that kind of person that if things are
true I would admit it and if they are not, I would tell
you so, because there's no harm in being honest.
Have you ever felt depressed and wanted to quit the
spotlight because of what was written about you?
The press has been good so far because they know the
consequence of their actions so I have to applaud them
for that. But you see on twitter, some people just bully
others. When I just come on, they just go 'hey, Karen
don gbagaun o'. Hello, I am human and I'm not
perfect, even Jesus Christ wasn't perfect. They just
feel that when you're a celebrity you don't have to
make mistakes, but I'm young and I'm still going to
make lots of mistakes and so you better deal with it. I
like the fact that I have never claimed to be holier than
thou or looked down on other people.
There was a tweet supposedly from Yvonne Nelson's
account taking shots at you, how do you respond to
that?
Let me break it down first and foremost, I don't
know Yvonne Nelson and I have never met her. I heard
she is a Ghanaian actress. I don't hate on anyone who is
trying to make a living but you just can't come out of
the blue and insult me. Everybody knows I'm not
troublesome. If you look for my trouble I would give
you double. Why would you just insult Nigerian celebs
and myself, 'wetin I do you na?'It's not like we've met
before. Attention seekers should go and look for the
attention elsewhere.
She did say her account was hacked?
If your account was hacked with a verified account they
won't tweet personal messages at celebs. They would
try and send viruses and spam and keep on hacking.
You don't say Karen has been quiet and try to take
shots at her. Right now, I don't even care anymore
because they are attention seekers who when they can't
get attention from men, they try to get it from women.
The best thing is to ignore them. If indeed your account
was hacked, you would look for my contact and call me
and apologize or apologize to Nigerians or mention at
me on twitter and apologize personally. I hope the girl
has learnt her lesson that if you want to be famous you
do it the right way. God has blessed you and put you
where you are so work on how to succeed and not look
for ways to belittle other people.
Were you disturbed that the tweets mentioned your
boobs and you not having a boyfriend?
As a celebrity you should know that there's something
called lumps and that cancer is real. If as a celebrity
I'm doing something to create awareness for cancer,
what is she doing? I have said it before and I am saying
it again out loud, if today they say Karen we found
lumps and we need to take actions I would do what I
will to save my life and not bother about someone
bullying me. I would do what's best for me. I love who
I see in the mirror and you can't say otherwise. She
says I don't have a boyfriend, I mean how cheeky is
that. It's your choice not to sleep around. I get men
asking me out everyday. I don't want to sleep with a
hundred men before I settle with the right one.
How do you cope with the several advances from
men?
You know I can go on twitter and say I'm lonely, or
pick up my phone and make calls and men will arrive,
but I don't want that. I want a connection. I want to be
in love, I don't want to fall for someone because he is a
star or because of what he has. I want to fall in love
with you because of who you are. Some men come and
try to entice me with materials things. You don't have
to be rich to win my world. I would wait for the right
man even if it takes a hundred years, after all they say
God's time is the best.
A month ago you were robbed, what was the
experience like?
It was in Elegushi. We were robbed of a lot of things
the car get security so we thank God say dem no thief
am. It was a Range Rover but no be my car. It's not
about what they stole but about you being okay and not
wanting to experience that scenario again.
Lately you've been very upfront about charitable
causes especially breast cancer. What's the story?
Yeah, breast cancer, orphanage homes, youth
empowerment and HIV. You see, the thing about
Nigerians is that they don't understand when you tell
them a thing because you're trying to create awareness.
Telling people about my lumps was to create awareness
but at the end of the day, I had it thrown at my face. At
the end of the day, I really don't care because I have
been able to do what I wanted to do, which is to create
awareness and pass the message across-early detection is
key. If you don't know what to do, we will tell you.
Every year there's this thing we organize with
Exquisite. We walk just to create awareness and we
have a lot of celebrities coming in not because we don't
have any other thing to do at the time, but because
that's another way of giving back to the society. It's not
always what the society can do for you but what can
you do for the society? And in my own little way I give
back and I don't have to wait till am 50 to do so.
What new projects are you working on?
I have my own company now and I am doing a lot. I
just rebuilt my website www.karenigho.com. We are
doing a lot to empower the youths. This December
would be very busy for me. I'm going to Benin on the
7th, Calabar on the 23rd am just going up and down
and of course I have several engagements with Naija
FM which I'm a part of.
