INEC Working With APC To Rig Ondo Election – Governor Ayo Fayose

The Governor of Ekiti State, Ayodele Fayose, says the decision of the Independent National Electoral Commission to accept Mr. Jimoh Ibrahim as the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party was evidence that the commission is aiding the All Progressives Congress to influence the poll.

Ibrahim, who was chosen by the Senator Modu Sheriff faction of the PDP, was picked by INEC over Mr. Eyitayo Jegede (SAN), who was presented by the Senator Ahmed Makarfi faction of the PDP.

Fayose, however, insisted the development showed that the commission had double standards and was aiding the APC.

"With the development in Ondo Guber election and the decision of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), it is clear that INEC is a department in APC led federal government," he said.

He argued that Ibrahim did not emerge through any known electoral process as the candidate of the PDP, adding that his acceptance was another plot by the APC to seize control of the state.

He said, "The APC has decided to rig the Ondo State election even before it is conducted and this is sad commentary for our democratic process that was near perfection before the advent of this APC government.

"The question to ask INEC is having accepted the candidate presented by the Malkarfi-led PDP National Caretaker Committee for the Edo State election, relying on the judgment of the Federal High Court, Port-Harcourt, despite the Abuja Federal High Court order at that time, what has changed? Obviously, it is either INEC is playing double-standard or has descended into the arena."

The commission's decision led to protests in the state on Friday.

Omg Man Kills Wife, Daughter In Abuja Because He Couldn't Feed Them (graphic photo )

A 40-year-old man from Okpoma village in Yala Local Government Area, Cross River State, Dominic Iyayi Ogar, has thrown his in-laws into mourning following the gruesome murder of his wife and their only daughter.

Ogar is alleged to have committed the dastardly act on October 8, 2016 in Mpape, Abuja. Sunday Sun reporter learnt from the Commissioner of Police, Federal Capital Territory Command, Mr. Mohammed Mustafa, that Ogar, who slept with his wife and their only daughter on the same bed, woke up suddenly in the middle of the night, took a knife and stabbed both of them to death, and they died instantly.

Mustafa said that Ogar then carried the corpses of the dead 27-year-old wife, Omago and the daughter, two-year-old Blessing to a nearby nursery and primary school in the area; he allegedly wrote a small note and dropped it beside the corpses and then ran off to hide in his farm.

His evil deed, however, came to light when one of his neighbours, Destiny Onwusuaka, noticed a trail of blood that led to the door of the family house. In a chat with Sunday Sun reporter, Onwusuaka said: "It was around 7:00am when I discovered stains of blood on the floor and followed the trail to the door of Ogar. When I looked into the room, I saw a pool of blood but I didn't see the husband or the victims.

"It was later that I saw the two corpses where the husband dropped them. I shouted and called our neighbours. We then ran to the police to report what we saw. We started searching for the husband. It took four days before we found him and arrested him in his farm on October 11, 2016.

Following the arrest of the suspect, the corpses of the deceased were moved to the mortuary of the National Hospital, Abuja.

At the Criminal Investigation Department of the FCT Police Command, where he spoke with Sunday Sun, Ogar said: "I don't have a job, I cannot feed my family, I can only feed myself, and God should forgive me for what I have done.

"I don't know what came to my mind; it was frustration that led me to stab my wife and only daughter to enable me survive in life."

As it stands now, Mustafa said that Ogar's hope of surviving in life now lies at the discretion of the court where he would soon be arraigned to answer charges.

JAMB To Scrap Uniform Cut-off Points For Universities

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board has hinted that it may cancel the use of uniform cut-off points for admitting candidates that took the Universities Tertiary Matriculation Examination.

The issue of cut-off marks as currently being used for admission, it said, should be subjected to national debate by stakeholders.

The Spokesperson of JAMB, Dr. Fabian Benjamin, gave the indication in a statement he issued on behalf of its Registrar/Chief Executive, Prof Is-haq Oloyede, on Sunday evening in Abuja.

He said a situation where universities, polytechnics and colleges of education were subjected to the same cut-off marks was no longer tenable because it prevented the institutions from admitting candidates of their choice.

Tertiary institutions, he sated, should be allowed to determine the kind of candidates they want to admit.
He added that there was an urgent need to reconsider the current cut-off point of 180 for admission in order to strengthen access to education, particularly for the less-privileged.

Benjamin said, "The uniformity of cut-off marks doesn't make any sense when colleges (of education) and polytechnics admit for national certificate of education and diplomas, while universities admit for degrees.

Yet, we subject them to the same cut-off marks, thereby starving these tiers of institutions from admitting candidates who, if not engaged, may likely become easy prey to social vices.

"This means that if a University wants 250 as minimum cut-off marks, why not? And if another wants less so be it. If a Polytechnic like YABATECH (Yaba College of Technology) wants 250 as cut-off marks, let them admit and if Gboko Polytechnic in Benue State where I come from wants less than 200, let them admit.

"Institutions should be known for their individual quality and not collective standards. This will foster positive competition for the overall good of our tertiary institutions. It is critical for all notable stakeholders to rethink the issue of cut-off marks.

"I am calling for a national debate on the propriety of cut off marks; institutions should be allowed to determine the kind of candidates they want."
JAMB also expressed worry over the class opportunities as it affects the distribution of admission resources.

The organisation said, "The rich have multiple opportunities which include going abroad for studies while the poor only have the opportunity of struggling for the scarce spaces here.

"They come back and they are integrated while the poor can't afford it and are forever denied the opportunity of education. Let institutions admit what they want according to their needs."

JAMB urged Nigerians to look at the decision critically for it to take action that would be for the good of the education sector.

Corpers Robbed And Raped In Rivers State by Gun Men

It was a sorrowful nightfall for two members of the National Youth Service Corps last Wednesday in Asarama Community, Andoni Local Government Area, Rivers State, after they were robbed and raped by suspected militants.
The victims were said to be in bed at their unsecured lodge in an isolated part of the community when the gunmen broke into their rooms to rob and rape them.

The operation which started at midnight lasted for more than two hours, with two female corps members raped, and phones, food stuff, clothes, shoes, money among others carted away.
One of the victims who didn't want her name in print in a telephone conversation with The Nation explained that the gunmen numbering seven wore face caps except for the ring leader, who was hooded.

She said the gunmen hinged their actions on the failure of the government to pay them their dues.
"The gunmen broke the door with their legs. No burglary proof or protector. We were about seven in the lodge. We had five serving Corps members, one ex-corps member and one other person. They entered my room and I was told to knock on other rooms. They came here with guns and cutlasses. They were about seven in number.

They asked all of us out of our rooms and they led all of us into an empty room. Then later they came to ask if we had any male Corps member because the lodge is like a wing. It was the first wing they robbed in the first hour of the operation. In that first wing, we had just one male Corps member; so they took him to the other room and beat him with a cutlass. They asked him to pull his trousers.

''We, the girls were packed in an empty room and they told us to stand up one after the other and they led us to our rooms. Some phones were collected and luckily for some of us, our phones were not with us because we were charging it. I had my phone with me but immediately they came, I hid my phone because they did not come with a torch. It was our torch they were collecting. There has not been light in our lodge since we started serving. We have been using a generator set and we don't put it on overnight.

So there was no light and they didn't come with any source of light. They asked me to put on my torch. They asked us how much we had as they led us to our rooms. As they were doing that, they were beating, slapping and hitting us. They searched the rooms and asked us to bring the money. So I think because I was fidgeting, I told them the amount I didn't have. The one I had I gave them and they were asking for the remaining one. I was still checking when one of them came in to scatter all my stuff. And I was trying to tell him that was just all I had. They asked me to kneel down and went into other people's room to do the same thing.

"When he came back into my room, he locked the door and asked me to look for the money, else he would kill me. I told them that I didn't have any money apart from the one I already gave them.

Then he (gunmen) asked me to pull my dress, and I was actually raped that night. I struggled but he overpowered me. He was beating and slapping me. The marks are still on my body. He was the one who had the gun with him and he had already locked the door on us. One other female Corps member was raped in our room too.

After that, he told me to lie faced down on my bed, then also took some things from my room and left. He told me to lock the door when he left and warned that I shouldn't open the door for any other person that when he wants to come, he would knock.

Then I was hearing footsteps; I think they were carrying the food stuff that they saw in other rooms. They went to the other wing where they met two men and a lady and they collected their phones, foods stuff, clothes, shoes, and some plates too. All these lasted for more than two hours. They sounded local and they were saying "since the government did not pay us; no vex o. All these things, na hunger cause am. If government no pay us, then if we get gun, we go find our way.''

Expatiating further, she said: "There is no police station in that area. And our lodge is bushy, so even if we called for help, no one would have heard us. If you are coming into the community, our lodge is the first house. It was my pastor who took us to a hospital. The hospital is in another community entirely, there is no health facility where our quarters is located.

"The local inspector, local government chairman and some other people visited us in the hospital and took care of our hospital bill. We were adequately treated and given drugs to prevent pregnancy or infection. They told us to leave the place.

"So, the place is under lock now. I feel very bad. It's very heartbreaking and traumatising but I know God has just been helping me. And with the people around me, I've been so encouraged. I know God knows about everything that happened and I know those that did it will not go unpunished."

She condemned the state of insecurity especially in hinterland communities like Asarama saying: "There was a time they raised an issue that everybody will be left in his or her own geopolitical zones, so even if they wouldn't want to scrap it, we should be posted within our geopolitical zones. If I was in my own place, whatever they were saying, I could pick up some little things from it when they were speaking the language and that could even be used to trace them. But in a place like that, by 5 or 6pm, you have to be in your own house and if something happens, you don't know how to communicate.

Even if someone is talking about killing you, you cannot understand to save yourself. If it will not be scrapped, they should maintain us in our own geopolitical zones and they should ensure security measures because we did not say we wanted to serve. They made it compulsory for us, so once we have agreed that we want to serve our country, they should make sure security measures are high. There is no security where we are and I think that was what gave the gunmen confidence because they know there is nowhere we can run to for help."

Meanwhile, other corps members have become apprehensive since the incident, especially the females.

According to one of the corps member serving in the same community, no measures have been instilled to forestall further attacks in the area.

She said it took the intervention of the Zonal Inspector to approve their relocation to safer areas as the Local Inspector insisted they stay or face harsh consequences.

According to her: "The proximity of our lodge to the scene coupled with no guaranteed security had set panic in us, we don't know these guys neither do we know what line of action they would take next, we just thought it's better to be proactive and not just take a harmful risk. So, we all decided to vacate the lodge and not to return.''

Any Police Officer Checking Vehicle Particulars is on Illegal Duty – AIG

A senior police officer has made comments about police officers who are usually on the road checking for vehicle particulars.
An Assistant Inspector-General (AIG) of Police, Mr Dan Bature, who is in Charge of Zone 11 comprising Oyo, Osun and Ondo states, has slammed police officers who are fond of checking vehicle particulars.

The police boss has said any policeman checking vehicle particulars on the highways is on illegal duty.

According to Vanguard, Bature said this on Wednesday in Ibadan during a two-day familiarization visit to Oyo State.

He said that the duty of the police was not to check vehicle particulars but to ensure safer roads. Bature warned policemen against blocking high ways, saying police patrol vehicles were not supposed to be toll gates.

He said the Inspector General of Police (IGP) was committed to changing the negative image of the police and supporting the anti-corruption war of the Federal Government.

Bature advised officers unable to key into the laudable initiatives of the IGP to resign from the force.

He said that a lot was expected by the public from the police, adding that this informed the monitoring of officers.
"The Inspector General of Police is determined to improve on your welfare and pursue the increment of your salary.

A domestic abuse victim was locked in her flat and subjected to a four-hour beating after refusing to get her boyfriend a cigarette.

Kelsie Skillen, 18, feared she was going to die when James McCourt hid her phone and her keys and told her: "You're going to have a bruised face tomorrow so I better do it right."

McCourt was jailed for 21 months after pleading guilty to two counts of assault. Following the sentencing, Kelsie told the Daily Record :

NUC Scraps Pre-degrees And Diplomas In Universities [click to read full details]

Pre-degree and diploma programmes in Nigerian universities have been scrapped. The National Universities Commission (NUC), which took the action, instructed them to leave the running of such programmes for polytechnics and concentrate effort on producing human capital in the core undergraduate, part-time and post-graduate courses.

Executive Secretary of the commission, Prof. Abubakar Adamu Rasheed, gave this order at meetings held between October 10 and 12 with vice chancellors of the 143 universities in the country, according to a statement by the NUC yesterday.

He also directed that the research directorate of NUC be strengthened to work with those of universities. This is to co-ordinate research activities in universities and ensure relevance of their outputs. He said the NUC, would engage a mix of old, experienced and young vibrant academics to come up with curricula that would not only be dynamic and responsive to national needs, but also conform to global trends.

The statement continued: "A comprehensive review of the entire university curricula (the Benchmark Minimum Academic Standards (BMAS)) and ranking of Nigerian universities have also been scheduled for 2017, while two of the cardinal activities of the commission, accreditation of programmes and resource verification, will now take place only twice and thrice a year, respectively: May and November for accreditation as well as March, July and December for resource verification."
NUC also warned that any university that failed to present its programmes for accreditation promptly without satisfactory reasons, given well in advance, would be denied same and the relevant agencies (JAMB and NYSC) duly notified.

"The accreditation of part-time programmes would ensure that they are of the same quality as the full-time programmes, thereby restoring public confidence in them," it said.

Rasheed urged universities to identify their areas of strength to mount joint Ph.D. programmes in view of increasing cost of training overseas.

He enjoined the vice chancellors to be creative and innovative enough to come up with new courses and programmes that would address emerging societal challenges.

He expressed NUC's readiness to work with them to develop the BMAS for such new programmes.

Skeleton Found In A Pastor's House In Ogun State [Photo]

A Human Skeleton, believed to be that of a woman, was found today in a Pastor's house in Peace land estate, Akute, Ogun state. According to a eyewitness, the shocking discovery was made when the owner of the pastor's house tried to evict him out of his flat over late payment of rent.

Samsung Permanently Discontinues The Galaxy Note7 [click to read full details]

Samsung has announced that it is ending the production of the Galaxy Note7 and permanently discontinuing it worldwide.

The decision comes immediately after the company issued a press release asking users to power down all original and replaced Note7 units, and for retailers and career partners to stop sales and exchanges of the smartphone.

"We remain committed to working diligently with appropriate regulatory authorities to take all necessary steps to resolve the situation." said Samsung in a statement yesterday.

The decision to end the Note7 production is the final step in a rather tumultuous journey. After being announced back in August and being met with generally positive reviews, the Note7 first came under fire — quite literally — after reports of units exploding surfaced on the internet. After 35 cases had been reported, Samsung issued an official recall of the device, which sent everyone in a tizzy and airlines and airport authorities calling for an official ban on usage of the device in several countries.

Samsung did what it could, replacing not just the affected but every Note7 it sold and issuing a new device with an updated battery pack and a green battery indicator so the customers and authorities alike could tell them apart. It even restricted the older devices from charging beyond 60% so people who hadn't replaced theirs yet wouldn't overcharge them.

But after the replacement units also started catching fire, most notably one on a Southwest Airlines flight 994 from Louisville to Baltimore, which had to be evacuated when a passenger's replacement Note7 caught fire, Samsung eventually asked everyone to power them down. And finally did what was inevitable and, some might argue, what should have been done from the beginning, pulled the plug entirely on the Note7.

We are waiting to hear from Samsung on how it plans to proceed with existing Note7 devices that are out there and also how it deals with customers who have pending orders.
