The Centenary award was rejected by The Kuti's, wole soyinka and the Fawehinmi's

The Kuti's ,Wole Soyinka and the
Fawehinmi's recently rejected the
Centenary awards for various reasons.
Professor Wole Soyinka said that: "I
would have preferred that the entire day
of infamy be ignored altogether. I'm
even thinking favourably of just ignoring
the obscenity, then turning up at the
counter-event."

The family of late Afro Beat legend
and human activists Fela Anikulapo-Kuti,
via femi said the family would not honour
the awards unless the government first
of all apologies for the murder of their
grandmother and the burning down of
their father's house Kalakuta
Republic…….The apologies never came.
The family of Late human activist and
lawyer Chief Gain Fawehinmi, also
rejected the award because of the
inclusion of the former Nigeria head of
state Ibrahim Babangida.....amongst
other reasons stated.

Each time prominent citizens reject
awards, they point to cause of protest,
and use the publicity of that rejection to
further strengthen the message of their
campaign,however the excuses from the
above mentioned rejections seem to be
personal and do not point towards any
message....well,i may be wrong.
Soyinka rejected the award on his own
behalf but do you think the other two
were right in rejecting the awards on
behalf of the dead?

Man Exchanges 15yr Old boy For Two Bags Of Rice

A yet to be identified man on Monday
successfully traded a 15-year old boy,
Seun Aderinwale, for two bags of rice
valued at N20,000 at Igando in Alimosho
area of Lagos State, southwest Nigeria.
According to eyewitness account, the
man, whose address is unknown, went to
4, Ifesowapo Street, Igando, on Monday
morning to buy two bags of rice from a
shop owned by a woman identified as Iya
Ibrahim.
The rice seller was not available at the
time but her son, Ibrahim, agreed to the
man's proposal to drop Seun, an
Aluminium apprentice, as collateral, in
order to collect the two bags of rice and
return later to pay.
However, when the shop owner returned
in the afternoon, she was surprised to
see Seun who was dropped there in
exchange for the two bags of rice taken
away by the
unidentified man.
When the man failed to return, the 15-
year old was held hostage until evening
when the pastor of his church, a
Celestial Church of Christ around the
area, saw him at the
shop looking despondent.
When Seun was questioned on how he
came about the fraudster, he said he
met him casually at Hotel Bus Stop
about 300 metres to his residence where
a church member had sent him on an
errand to play lotto, popularly known as
"Baba Ijebu".
Seun said he did not know the man's
house or have other information about
him.
The teenager later regained his freedom
when the Celestial Church pastor, known
simply as Oluso in the neighborhood,
settled the matter with Iya Ibrahim, the
rice seller.
He said the woman should take
responsibility for one of the stolen bags
of rice while Seun's father, a co-worker
with him in the church, should pay for
the other bag of rice when he returned
from his trip to Ifo in Ogun State. Seun's
father agreed to pay N10,000 for the
bag of rice when he
returned from Ifo.
P.M.NEWS learnt that the rice seller
agreed to the pastor's proposal and did
not report the matter to the police.
"If I report the incident to the police, I
cannot leave the station without
spending money.
Therefore, it is better for me to accept
the proposal by Oluso, the rice
seller told residents who gathered in
front of her shop to watch the drama.
When Ibrahim was questioned why he
allowed such an unusual arrangement,
he told residents that the conman asked
for two and half bags of rice, adding,
"when the motorcycle was about to go
with the
two bags, I asked for the money but
Seun assured me he was coming back
for the half bag.
He even claimed to be a close
relation of the man." However, some
hours after the man had disappeared
and failed to return, Ibrahim said Seun
retracted his earlier statement,
saying he did not know the man.

(Photos)Gabriella,A Model, badly injured by boyfriend.

She is an aspiring Victoria Street Model,
Gabriella, via her instagram account
@bambiiiii_ shared her recent sad
experience of domestic violence from
her boyfriend of eight months. She was
badly beaten, thrown from a moving
vehicle and dragged. She shared photo
of her injury and 2 others before injury
on her instagram page and wrote:
"This might be a little graphic but I just
want to let everyone know that I am
okay. I am a survivor of domestic
violence with a boy I dated for 8 months.
I really thought everything was fine but
he constantly questioned me about
cheating and flirting. Nonsense. I never
looked at someone the way he looked at
me. Thought I loved this boy. How can
someone that 'loves' me do this to me?
The scars on my chest are way worse
and extend down to my right nipple,
completely scarred. The skin on my
shoulder has been completely skinned.
And I have bruising on my rib cage,
neck, and my muscles. I was kicked out
of a moving vehicle, then beaten and
dragged, as I blacked out and was left
lying there in my own puddle of blood.
Doctors said I could have died if not
made it when I did. I am so blessed and
beyond lucky to be alive and have so
much support from friends, family, and
strangers. As I try to recover I ask to
please keep me in your prayers. I have
to wear a neck brace for 3-4 weeks, an
arm cast and I can barely walk for now.
Thank you for all the love. I hope to be
an inspiration to women and anyone
involved in domestic violence. Details of
whether the boy has been arrested or
not was not given.

Lagos State Govt Bans Mini Skirts, Other Attires!

Governor Babatunde Fashola's
administration has banned indecent
dressing among female public
servants. All forms of dresses that
expose breasts, contours and other
sensitive female body parts have been
outlawed.
The decision was taken as a result of
worsening cases of indecent dressing
among female public servants at the
Lagos State Government Secretariat,
Alausa, Ikeja, Lagos, southwest Nigeria.
P.M.NEWS has observed that all forms
of skimpy dresses or mini skirts, tight
trousers revealing the contours,
sleeveless dresses and blouses and
body clinging dresses are worn by
some female public servants as they
walk about the secretariat.
Worried by this despicable act, the
state government had to introduce
new dress code among public servants,
especially the female folk.
A circular issued by the Head of
Service, Mrs. Josephine Williams dated
7 February, 2014 has been sent to all
government Ministries, Departments
and Agencies, MDAs calling on all
Directors of Finance and
Administration, DFAs, to immediately
move against indecent dressing in
Alausa.
The circular, with the reference
number CIR/HOS/14/Vol.1/022, said
similar directive was issued through
the HOS in 2005 in a circular number
113 mandating public servants to dress
properly and decently to the office and
official functions portray the good
image of the state government.
The government warned that it would
begin to take drastic and punitive
measures against recalcitrant public
servants who flout the directive.
"It has however been observed with
grave concern that some officers have
not been complying with this directive.
The noticeable non-compliance of some
officers to this directive should
henceforth stop as the extant civil
service rules and regulation on proper
and indecent dressing still subsist and
will be applied accordingly on flouters,"
the HOS said.
Williams listed what is contained in the
new dress code for female civil
servants, saying that skirts above the
knee should not be worn by public
servants, saying that dresses allowed
are skirts which are of knee level,
moderate slit and not body clinging
skirts.
According to the HOS, if female public
servants must wear trousers, such
trousers should neither be tight nor
revealing and must be worn with a
jacket.
Also, gowns to be worn by female
public servants must be of knee level,
moderate slit, not sleeveless and not
body clinging.
Williams added that if native attires
must be worn, they must be worn
completely.
The government also reeled out dress
code for male public servants. In the
dress code for men, administrative
officers must wear suit and tie as
professionals and other officers could
wear wear suit and tie or French suit.
Junior and clerical staff are allowed to
wear shirts and trousers and French
suit while complete native wear is
allowed for all cadres of public
servants.
"As a matter of necessity, all Directors
of Finance and Administration are
hereby enjoined to ensure that officers
within their purview adhere strictly to
moderate and decent dressing," said
the HOS.
Already, the Directors of Finance and
Administration of various ministries
have been having urgent meeting with
their staff to intimate them about the
new dress code.
The development has become a
subject of discourse among public
servants at Alausa.

Cultists kill Bowen student for rejecting sexual advances

According to punch news, The life of a 17-year-old student of
Bowen University, Opeyemi Odusanya,
has been cut short by some cult
members in Lagos.
It was gathered that the undergraduate
was murdered for allegedly rejecting
sexual advances from some youths in
the area and also for "being too proud."
PUNCH Metro learnt that the victim was
a 300 level student of Biochemistry at
the university.
Police authorities told our correspondent
that Opeyemi was stabbed to death by
the cultists at her parents' house in the
Alakuko area of Lagos on February 3,
2014.
Police sources told PUNCH Metro that
investigations had revealed that the
culprits were residents of the area.
A police officer, who wished to remain
anonymous, said, "In the afternoon of
February 3, 2014, the deceased went to
buy airtime for her telephone. As she
was returning, a group of cult members
trailed and entered the house with her.
"Opeyemi was alone at home when the
guys entered. They instructed her to
turn on the generator so that if she
screamed, no one would hear.
"We believe that they wanted to rape
the girl, but she must have put up a
fierce struggle as the whole house was
scattered.
"The guys subsequently stabbed her in
the stomach several times and ripped
out her intestines.
"After killing her, they took her phone
and the keys to her parents' vehicle, a
jeep, which was on the table. They stole
the jeep, which was parked in the
compound, after killing the girl."
The sources told our correspondent that
after the guys had fled, they used
Opeyemi's telephone line to send a text
message to her mother, explaining why
they killed the 17-year-old.
The text message, which was typed in
English and Yoruba languages, and made
available to our correspondent, read,
"Your child has been proud. We have
been toasting her, but she has refused
to accept. We have killed her to teach a
lesson. We have also driven your car
away.
"If you want your car back, come to
Lakas Hotel or Cele Bus Stop around Mile
2 to pick it up. If we see policemen
around, we will kill everybody."
Residents of the area told our
correspondent that the victim's mother,
Olayinka, had a panic attack after
reading the message and quickly
informed those that were with her.
However, a phone call from the family's
housemaid was said to have confirmed
Olayinka's fears that the text message
was not a bluff.
It was learnt that she returned to the
house to meet the lifeless body of her
child.
PUNCH Metro gathered that the mother
of the deceased, who is a senior official
at the Mushin Local Government
secretariat, later reported the incident at
the Alakuko Police Division.
A police source told our correspondent
that the murder weapon had been
recovered.
"By all indications, the girl was not raped
because her clothes were intact. The
knife used in killing her has been
recovered," the policeman said.
It was gathered that the parents of the
girl had relocated to the Redemption
Camp on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.
Our correspondent, who visited the
Facebook page of the deceased,
observed that tributes had been pouring
in for the 300 level student.
One of her friends, Folake Kuforiji, wrote,
"RIP Dear, May your soul rest in perfect
peace and may the Almighty God protect
and console the rest of your family. A
real gem is gone. I remember back then
in secondary school when we used to call
you Ope International. You left us too
soon, but God knows best."
A man, Adeniji Chigozie, who claimed to
be her former teacher, wrote,
"Remember those days in class. You
were one of the students I cherished and
respected. You were respectful and
intelligent. As a teacher, I was very
proud of you. The details of the cause of
your death are still sketchy and
confusing. Nigeria has lost another
intelligent and beautiful mind – A great
star has fallen!
"Above all, I wish your family and loved
ones the fortitude to bear this shocking
loss – May God in His gracious nature
comfort them, amen!"
When contacted on the telephone, Police
Public Relations Officer, DSP Ngozi
Braide, said, "I have called the Divisional
Police Officer at the Alakuko Police
Division and he said he was not aware of
the incident."

Syrian Girl Stoned To Death For 'IMMORAL BEHAVIOUR' Of Having A Facebook Account

A Syrian girl has been stoned to death
for opening a Facebook account, it has
been claimed.
The girl, named in media reports as
Fatoum Al-Jassem, was sentenced to
death by a Sharia court in Al-Reqqa after
it ruled having a Facebook account was
immoral behaviour.
She was taken to the court by Islamic
State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) militants
after she was caught using the social
networking site, it has been reported.
The ISIS is a pro-Al Qaida jihadist group
that many fear is taking an iron grip over
parts of Syria.
The town's women, meanwhile, have
been ordered by ISIS via posters to
'cover up their beauty', according
to CNN, and banned from seeing male
doctors or even leaving home without a
male relative.

Must read! Chimamanda Adichie writes on the anti-gay law

Article written by award winning writer
Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie titled 'Why
can't he just be like everyone else?'
Find it below...
I will call him Sochukwuma. A thin,
smiling boy who liked to play with us
girls at the university primary school
in Nsukka. We were young. We knew
he was different, we said, 'he's not
like the other boys.' But his was a
benign and unquestioned difference;
it was simply what it was. We did not
have a name for him. We did not know
the word 'gay.' He was Sochukwuma
and he was friendly and he played oga
so well that his side always won.
In secondary school, some boys in his
class tried to throw Sochukwuma off a
second floor balcony. They were
strapping teenagers who had learned
to notice, and fear, difference. They
had a name for him. Homo. They
mocked him because his hips swayed
when he walked and his hands
fluttered when he spoke. He brushed
away their taunts, silently, sometimes
grinning an uncomfortable grin. He
must have wished that he could be
what they wanted him to be. I imagine
now how helplessly lonely he must
have felt. The boys often asked, "Why
can't he just be like everyone else?"
Possible answers to that question include
'because he is abnormal,' 'because he is
a sinner, 'because he chose the
lifestyle.' But the truest answer is 'We
don't know.' There is humility and
humanity in accepting that there are
things we simply don't know. At the age
of 8, Sochukwuma was obviously
different. It was not about sex, because
it could not possibly have been – his
hormones were of course not yet fully
formed – but it was an awareness of
himself, and other children's awareness
of him, as different. He could not have
'chosen the lifestyle' because he was too
young to do so. And why would he – or
anybody – choose to be homosexual in a
world that makes life so difficult for
homosexuals?
The new law that criminalizes
homosexuality is popular among
Nigerians. But it shows a failure of our
democracy, because the mark of a true
democracy is not in the rule of its
majority but in the protection of its
minority – otherwise mob justice would
be considered democratic. The law is
also unconstitutional, ambiguous, and a
strange priority in a country with so
many real problems. Above all else,
however, it is unjust. Even if this was not
a country of abysmal electricity supply
where university graduates are barely
literate and people die of easily-
treatable causes and Boko Haram
commits casual mass murders, this law
would still be unjust. We cannot be a
just society unless we are able to
accommodate benign difference, accept
benign difference, live and let live. We
may not understand homosexuality, we
may find it personally abhorrent but our
response cannot be to criminalize it.
A crime is a crime for a reason. A crime
has victims. A crime harms society. On
what basis is homosexuality a crime?
Adults do no harm to society in how they
love and whom they love. This is a law
that will not prevent crime, but will,
instead, lead to crimes of violence: there
are already, in different parts of Nigeria,
attacks on people 'suspected' of being
gay. Ours is a society where men are
openly affectionate with one another.
Men hold hands. Men hug each other.
Shall we now arrest friends who share a
hotel room, or who walk side by side?
How do we determine the clunky
expressions in the law – 'mutually
beneficial,' 'directly or indirectly?'
Many Nigerians support the law because
they believe the Bible condemns
homosexuality. The Bible can be a basis
for how we choose to live our personal
lives, but it cannot be a basis for the
laws we pass, not only because the holy
books of different religions do not have
equal significance for all Nigerians but
also because the holy books are read
differently by different people. The
Bible, for example, also condemns
fornication and adultery and divorce, but
they are not crimes.
For supporters of the law, there seems
to be something about homosexuality
that sets it apart. A sense that it is not
'normal.' If we are part of a majority
group, we tend to think others in
minority groups are abnormal, not
because they have done anything
wrong, but because we have defined
normal to be what we are and since they
are not like us, then they are abnormal.
Supporters of the law want a certain
semblance of human homogeneity. But
we cannot legislate into existence a
world that does not exist: the truth of
our human condition is that we are a
diverse, multi-faceted species. The
measure of our humanity lies, in part, in
how we think of those different from us.
We cannot – should not – have empathy
only for people who are like us.
Some supporters of the law have asked –
what is next, a marriage between a man
and a dog?' Or 'have you seen animals
being gay?' (Actually, studies show that
there is homosexual behavior in many
species of animals.) But, quite simply,
people are not dogs, and to accept the
premise – that a homosexual is
comparable to an animal – is inhumane.
We cannot reduce the humanity of our
fellow men and women because of how
and who they love. Some animals eat
their own kind, others desert their
young. Shall we follow those examples,
too?
Other supporters suggest that gay men
sexually abuse little boys. But pedophilia
and homosexuality are two very
different things. There are men who
abuse little girls, and women who abuse
little boys, and we do not presume that
they do it because they are
heterosexuals. Child molestation is an
ugly crime that is committed by both
straight and gay adults (this is why it is a
crime: children, by virtue of being non-
adults, require protection and are unable
to give sexual consent).
There has also been some nationalist
posturing among supporters of the law.
Homosexuality is 'unafrican,' they say,
and we will not become like the west.
The west is not exactly a homosexual
haven; acts of discrimination against
homosexuals are not uncommon in the
US and Europe. But it is the idea of
'unafricanness' that is truly insidious.
Sochukwuma was born of Igbo parents
and had Igbo grandparents and Igbo
great-grandparents. He was born a
person who would romantically love
other men. Many Nigerians know
somebody like him. The boy who
behaved like a girl. The girl who behaved
like a boy. The effeminate man. The
unusual woman. These were people we
knew, people like us, born and raised on
African soil. How then are they
'unafrican?'
If anything, it is the passage of the law
itself that is 'unafrican.' It goes against
the values of tolerance and 'live and let
live' that are part of many African
cultures. (In 1970s Igboland, Area
Scatter was a popular musician, a man
who dressed like a woman, wore
makeup, plaited his hair. We don't know
if he was gay – I think he was – but if he
performed today, he could conceivably
be sentenced to fourteen years in
prison. For being who he is.) And it is
informed not by a home-grown debate
but by a cynically borrowed one: we
turned on CNN and heard western
countries debating 'same sex marriage'
and we decided that we, too, would pass
a law banning same sex marriage.
Where, in Nigeria, whose constitution
defines marriage as being between a
man and a woman, has any homosexual
asked for same-sex marriage?
This is an unjust law. It should be
repealed. Throughout history, many
inhumane laws have been passed, and
have subsequently been repealed.
Barack Obama, for example, would not
be here today had his parents obeyed
American laws that criminalized
marriage between blacks and whites.
An acquaintance recently asked me, 'if
you support gays, how would you have
been born?' Of course, there were gay
Nigerians when I was conceived. Gay
people have existed as long as humans
have existed. They have always been a
small percentage of the human
population. We don't know why. What
matters is this: Sochukwuma is a
Nigerian and his existence is not a crime.

2Face Idibia Impregnates Acct Officer, Allegedly Begs For Abortion

According to gbaganMedia, 2Face Idibia Impregnates Acct Officer, Allegedly Begs For Abortion

2Face Idibia has become notorious for making several children with different women who are not his wives! 2Face is the celebrity who has made baby mama culture the new norm in Nigeria.

When he decided to settle down with Annie, one of his (three known) baby mamas, many of his fans and critics were happy that finally he would become more responsible and sexually focused on his legal wife, Annie, but the latest report filtering into town concretely suggests that marriage cannot change
this Benue-born singer.

Icon Weekly can authoritatively inform you that as you read this, a young lady who works for one of the new generation banks, Teniola, is three months pregnant for this prince of African music! Did that hit you like Mike Tyson's punch! Wait, more is coming.

We gathered that Teniola, who hails from Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State, has been 2Face's account officer for a long time now. Did you say this sexual relationship could have been going on before his marriage?
Teniola, a graduate of University of Lagos, might just be another victim of the pressures marketers in the banking sector face to lure customers with
everything they have, if you know what I mean.

The worst part of the story is that 2Baba, as he's fondly called, (allegedly) wants the pregnancy terminated! Our source revealed to us that he has been begging Teniola with a brand new car to get rid
of the pregnancy and keep this scandal out of media radar. Has he stopped counting his children? I guess it is time to ask 2Baba.

17-year-old boy found dead inside transformer ‘he tried to vandalize’

A young man in Niger is said to have lost his life
after being electrocuted by a transformer in the
Kpakungu area of Minna, the state capital.
Residents discovered the corpse of the unidentified
teenager, believed to be between 17-20 years of
age, due to the stench the natural process of
decomposition was causing.
The victim is said to have been found inside the
Power Holding Company of Nigeria transformer and
was allegedly killed in an attempt to vandalize it.
The Eagle Online reports:
The lifeless body of the boy, suspected to be
between 17 years and 20 years, wearing a T-shirt
that was torn upon a pair of jeans trousers, was
discovered right inside the transformer. The body
had already turned black.
The boy, whose mission, our correspondent
gathered, was to steal copper from the transformer
serving Supreme Water factory and environs, may
have died about two days before his lifeless body
was discovered by passers-by.
The offensive odour oozing from the already
decomposing body, which had been attracting
flies, our correspondent gathered, prompted
people in the neighbourhood to conduct a search of
where and what could have caused the stench.
The search party, it was gathered, was shocked to
behold the lifeless body of a teenager, with a
rubber slippers, which he used to pad his two
arms, apparently to avoid being electrocuted, as he
crawled through the transformer, one of the
residents of the area told our correspondent.
Some of the people interviewed in the area recalled
how the vandals had made life unbearable for
them as it was becoming a routine thing for the
transformer to break down every now and then due
to the antics of the criminals.

Boko Haram Is Not An Islamic Group – Sultan Of Sokoto

The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa'ad
Abubakar III, has urged Nigerians to stop
judging Muslims based on the activities
of Boko Haram insurgents in the North
East, saying Boko Haram was not an
Islamic group.
Abubakar, who spoke at the first Annual
Conference of Ahlus-Sunnah of Nigeria at
the Tafawa Balewa Square, Lagos,
yesterday, said those who referred to
Boko Haram as an Islamic sect were
unfair to Muslims as the group comprised
of criminals who were carrying out
terrorist activities against the country.
"Those terrorising us are not Muslims.
They are terrorists. People should not be
referring to them as an Islamic sect.
They are agents of insurrection," he
stated.
The Sultan also noted that Nigeria was
not a secular country but a multi-
religious society, adding that Muslims
should seek to live according to the
dictates of their religion.
Also speaking at the event, Governor of
Osun State, Rauf Aregbesola, identified
the major cause of religious extremism
and intolerance in the country as claims
by Christians and Muslims that nobody
could go to heaven except through Jesus
Christ and Prophet Mohammed,
respectively.
Aregbesola, who was one of the guest
speakers, quoted from the Q'uran to
buttress his point that Islam was a
religion of peace. He said that what
obtained in Yoruba as regards the
healthy relationship between Muslims
and Christians should be emulated by
people in other parts of the country.
Other speakers blamed injustice,
poverty and ignorance as major causes
of disunity in the country, stressing that
there was nothing uniting a very poor
man with an extremely rich person, as
both groups were in two separate
worlds.
Former Head of State, Gen Mohammed
Buhari on his part said the panacea for
peace included security and good
management of the country's resources.
"When Obafemi Awolowo was in the
Western Region and Saduana of Sokoto,
Ahmadu Bello was in the North, there
were no religious crises because they
managed the resources well. Awolowo
was a Christian and he established the
Muslims Welfare Board. May God
Almighty give us a leader that can
deliver in 2015," Buhari said.
In his remarks, Vice President Namadi
Sambo said the conference, held under
the theme,"Peace and Unity for
Sustainable Development", could not
have come at a better time than this
period, because of the security
challenges facing the country.
Sambo said the recent anti-gay rights
bill, which was signed into law, has
further demonstrated that religion has
taken its proper place in the country.
The conference was attended by
prominent Nigerians including Governor
Ramalan Yero of Kaduna State; Speaker,
House of Representatives, Aminu Waziri
Tambuwal; former Secretary to the
Government of the Federation, Alhaji
Yayale Ahmed; Senator Idris Umar, and
some ministers.
President of Niger Republic was also
represented at the conference.

Osun: Two to die for raping teenager to death

An Osogbo High Court on Wednesday
sentenced two young men to death by
hanging for raping a 14-year-old girl,
Bilikisu Adeyemi, to death.
The convicts, Suraju Olarewaju, 20, and
Lekan Olatayo, 20, whose addresses are
unknown, were arraigned in 2005 on a
two-count charge of conspiracy and
murder.
In her judgment, Justice R.A. Shiyanbola,
said the prosecution had proved its case
beyond reasonable doubts and therefore
sentenced the duo to death by hanging.

Sections 319 (1) and 324 of the Criminal
Code, Laws of Osun, 2004.
Earlier, the prosecutor, Mrs Folashade
Adekanmi, had told the court that the
convicts committed the offences on June
1, 2005 at Abesu area of Osogbo, Osun
State.

while raping her at about midnight.
She said the accused had also confessed
to the crime.

I should have bought a jet by now - Ayuba

Bonsue Fuji exponent, Adewale Ayuba,
speaks on his plans for the music genre
and the challenges ahead in this
interview with JAYNE AUGOYE
One thing that cannot be taken away
from Adewale Ayuba is his Afrocentric
yet modernist approach to music. The
legendary musician, who has about 23
albums to his credit, believes firmly in
the uniqueness of indigenous African
music genres, such as Afrobeat, Highlife,
Fuji and Juju.
Although he is one of the few artistes
with a cross-over appeal, Ayuba says
that one of the high points of his career
is his duet with Jazzman Olofin in 2006.
He was featured in the production of the
latter's hit song, Raise the Roof.
"I was the first fuji artiste to sing with a
Nigerian hip hop artiste. Before then, no
one believed that such collaboration was
possible. When you realise that younger
artistes are taking the shine off the older
musicians, you must look for ways to
collaborate with them in order to remain
relevant," he says.
Eight years after, Ayuba still believes
that any musician of his generation who
wants to remain relevant must learn to
re-invent himself by the day. Although
there is so much competition among
music artistes, the singer is worried
about certain developments in the
industry.
He says, "As far as I am concerned,
Davido O and the likes sing Fuji. The
truth is the music they play is sweeter
than American hip hop and rhythm 'n'
blues. So why call it hip hop? That is why
they cannot enter for the Grammies as
that tag 'hip hop' is limiting.
"They have to rename it 'hip hop Africo'
so that the West will know that it is
Nigerian. Rhythm 'n' blues and hip hop
music in Nigeria is like a candle that will
die soon because there is no door to the
outside world. And any music you can't
take to the outside world is not worth
doing."
To the layman, the average fuji artiste is
a college drop-out or tout. But this
erroneous impression does not bother
Ayuba as much as the quality of music
videos that such artistes churn out.
He says, "Fuji musicians don't spend
money or make out enough time to
shoot good videos. But you can't blame
them for this because they don't believe
it is worth doing, since their songs don't
get enough air play on radio stations.
"Many of the people behind the consoles
at these radio stations are aged between
18 and 23 years. The kind of music they
know and prefer is hip hop. And you
know Nigerians love anything that comes
from the western countries.
"See what happened 10 years ago with
Makossa music. It practically took over
our churches and mosques, though most
fans didn't even understand the
language."
To chart a new course for fuji in Nigeria,
Ayuba plans to give back to a new crop
of talented singers. Having recently set
up a state-of-the-art recording and
editing suite, he intends to shoot free
videos for select fuji singers.
"Since you require as much as N1.5m to
shoot a standard music video, I will help
them by shooting world class videos, as
long as the song is right. They won't be
able to compare the quality of the videos
to the ones that cost a paltry N100, 000
to produce," he reveals.
As far as Ayuba concerned, fulfilment
comes in different forms. But he believes
that the staying power of any artiste
depends on how happy he is.
As a recording artiste, he is contented
with the acclaim he has received from
music fans.
"I am not happy with what the nation is
doing to us. Piracy is killing us. King
Sunny Ade and I should have bought
private jets by now. I can't even release
an album because I know I may not
recover my money," he says.
A director of the Collecting Society of
Nigeria, Ayuba laments that many
artistes are ignorant of the activities of
the body.
He says, "Some of them think it is all
about sharing money. Some don't even
have albums, but they expect to be paid
royalties. Others have dead albums. In
spite of this, COSON still gives between
N30, 000 and N40, 000 annually to
artistes who don't even have albums.
Those who have albums receive
between N500, 000 and N4m every
year."
The artiste, who has avoided getting
entangled in scandals these past years,
speaks glowingly about his wife of many
years.
He says, "I can never be ashamed to talk
about my woman. After God, she is next.
I cherish my home a lot. If you don't
have a settled home, you can't have a
successful career. More so, I believe in
one man, one wife."
Having clinched the two Kora awards in
2005, Ayuba says he has his eyes on
what he calls the bigger picture for now.
