Woman Crushed, Man’s Legs Torn Off As They Made Love On Rail Tracks

A Ukranian couple's inability to rein in their passion for
each other ended in tragedy when a woman was killed
by a train and her partner had his legs torn off during
pre-dawn love-making on a railway track, police say.
The accident took place in the southeastern Ukrainian
region of Zaporizhia early on Saturday.
"Returning from our friends', my girlfriend and I could
not overcome our passionate nature and wanted to feel a
sense of thrill near a railway track," a police statement
quoted the 41-year-old man as saying.
A police spokesman separately said on Sunday that the
pair was believed to have been drunk.
The woman died on the spot while the man was
hospitalised with his legs torn off below the knee.
Police did not release the names of the victims, saying
it had opened a criminal probe over the safety violation.

ASUP To Resume Strike On Oct. 4

The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics, ASUP,
announced on Saturday that it has resolved to resume its
suspended nationwide strike from next week, following
failure of the federal government to fulfil its agreement
with the union.
The union had been on several weeks of strike, but
suspended it on July 17 following the intervention of
federal lawmakers in its negotiation with the federal
government.
The National Publicity Secretary of the union, Chirman
Clement, in a statement on Saturday said the union took the
decision at her 75th National Executive Council (NEC)
meeting held at the Federal Polytechnic Bida, Niger State
and resolved to resume the suspended strike on October 4.
"In view of the continued insincerity of Government to
honour the agreement reached with ASUP, NEC resolves
that the union will resume the suspended strike with effect
from 4th October, 2013."
The lecturers passed a vote of no confidence on the National
Board for Technical Education, NBTE, and called for the
immediate establishment of a National Polytechnics
Commission (NPC) to proactively cater for the needs of the
sector.

Boko Haram Massacre: Yobe Governor In Tears At The Sight Of Corpses Of 40 Victims

Yobe State Governor Ibrahim Gaidam
Governor Ibrahim Gaidam of Yobe State could not
hold back his tears when he visited the Damaturu's
specialist hospital where the injured from a fresh Boko
Haram attack were recuperating.
The critically injured; five students, three of whom
have fractures, one has a abdominal injury and another
a bullet wound lied helplessly at the hospital as the
governor sympathised with them. He couldn't however
hold himself at the sight of 40 corpses, all students of
the School of Agriculture, Gujba, the latest victims of
the Boko Haram massacre.
The Medical Director, Damaturu Specialist Hospital, Dr
Garba Fika, confirmed that 40 students of the college
were killed in the attack early Sunday.
Speaking amid tears, the governor urged security
operatives to intensify aerial surveillance of the area.
The state deputy governor, Abubakar Aliyu, the
Provost of the College Mulima Mato, and other
dignitaries also shed tears at the mortuary when they
saw the corpses of the students.
Schools in Yobe re-opened just 13 days ago after 10
weeks of forced closure following unrelenting Boko
Haram attacks on schools, attacks which had led to the
death of 29 students and three teachers.
Seven students and two teachers were in June killed at
Government Secondary School Damaturu. In July, 22
students and two teachers were killed at Government
Secondary School Mamudo.
Meanwhile, chairman of the Northern Governors
Forum, Governor Babangida Aliyu has charged security
agencies to do all within their powers to halt the killing
of defenceless citizens, and attacks on places of worship
and educational facilities especially in the North East,
by members of extremist sect, Boko Haram.
Aliyu said its members were seriously concerned at
renewed attacks on innocent people, following
Sunday's killing of 40 students of the College of
Agriculture, Gujba, Yobe State, as well as the killing of
15 persons in Zangang community in Kaura Local
Government Area of Kaduna State.
"The forum is particularly alarmed that the shooting to
dead of 40 students of the College of Education; Gujba,
Yobe State followed the same pattern as the killing of
22 students and a teacher at Government Secondary
School, Mamudo in the same state last July," said a
statement signed by Mr. Aliyu's Chief Press Secretary,
Danladi Ndayebo.

Do You Want A Flat Tummy Fast?! Read This and Follow These Tips Today

The stomach area is a trouble spot for many people
because that is where most people gather fat. If you
have this challenge too, follow these tips today to get a
flatter tummy.
1, Drink Water:
It sounds very simple but water is essential for keeping
your stomach flat. Drinking a lot of water helps your
body digest your food fast and wash out any excess
quickly. Water flushes out your system so there's less
residue to be stored as fat. Not drinking enough water
can lead to bloating which makes your belly appear
bigger than it really is.
2, Reduce Salt Intake:
Too much salt is toxic to the system and this is why our
bodies excrete it in sweat. Salt causes water retention
which can cause a big belly.
According to experts, reducing your salt intake will
help your body release water it has been retaining to
help dilute high salt levels in your body. Cut down on
your salt intake to help prevent a bloated tummy.
3, Don't Rush Your Food:
Make sure you slow down and sit down at all
mealtimes. It will help you relax and focus on what you
are eating. And make sure you mind your manners.
Eating with your mouth closed, and not talking while
you are chewing, will reduce the amount of air that
would otherwise get trapped in your stomach making it
bigger.
4, Laugh Out Loud:
Laughing is a fantastic and fun way to tone up your
abdominal muscles. Every time you have a good laugh,
you are helping to strengthen your stomach muscles and
having fun too.
5, Drink Green Tea:
Research has shown a direct link between green tea and
smaller waists. Green tea contains compounds called
catechins, which increase the release of fat from fat
cells, help boost energy expenditure and speed up the
burning of fat by the liver which means less fat for
your stomach to store.
6, Exercise:
To get rid of the fat making your stomach big, you
need exercise. Do sit ups and pull ups. Push ups are
good too. Also do cardio exercises like walking,
jogging and swimming. They are very effective for fat
burning.
7, Smaller Portions:
Eating big portions of food at a go expands your
stomach muscles and makes your tummy big. Instead
spread your daily intake into about 5 meals with smaller
portions. This will keep your stomach in shape.
8, Don't Eat Late:
Eating late is one of the biggest causes of a big belly.
This is because your body doesn't have enough time to
digest the body before you go to sleep so most of it is
stored as fat. The ideal time to stop eating is 7pm but if
you have to eat late, make sure you eat just a little food
and no carbohydrates.
Follow these tips today and watch your tummy shrink
fast!

SHOCK: 7 Members of Ogbonnaya's Family Run Mad

Unbelievable story of Mr Ogbonnaya Ani who has 7
members of his family insane. He hails from Umuose
Urobo in the Uburu area of Ohaozara LGA of Ebonyi
State. The Ani family is being ravaged by the spirit of
madness.
Ogbonnaya Ani's elder brother's daughter is mentally
challenged. His younger brother's son is in the same
condition. Three of his own children, a male and two
females, are equally afflicted. His daughter-in-law is not
left out. So, there are six mentally ill persons in the family
and, perhaps, still counting. Worst still, one of Ani's
mentally challenged daughters is heavily pregnant and no
one seems to know who impregnated her...
And before his first wife died, she exhibited some signs of
madness.
Recently, Mr Ogbonnaya told the stranger than fiction
story. There is no doubt that the madness ravaging his
immediate and nuclear families have left its toll on the old
man. Sadness is evident in his sunken eyes. He looked frail
and his voice quakes in palpable agony as he spoke. But for
the magnanimity of a relation, Mr Ani and his household
would not have had a place to lay their heads. This is
because his mentally challenged son, Igwe Ani, alias Martin
Martin, set his house ablaze. And before help could come,
the structure had been reduced to ashes.
So, currently, Ogbonnaya and his family are squatters
somewhere in Uburu, Ohaozara LGA of Ebonyi State.
When the reporter visited the family last Wednesday,
Ozieme, his beautiful but insane daughter, was hanging
around. With her tummy protruding as a result of advanced
pregnancy, she looked vacantly into space, perhaps unaware
of her environment and condition. A few times she smiled
and muttered to herself. When asked to pose for a
photograph, Ozieme obliged.
"This place we are is not my house," Ogbonnaya began.
"My place is further up, after Oriebe. I relocated to this
place because of the problem that I'm facing. I had a small
mud house and I made it good enough for people to stay in
before the problem started through my son, Igwe. It first
started with Igwe and his sister, Ozieme joined later. While
Igwe's problem started at home, Ozieme's started from
outside the community. When she travelled and returned,
she began to behave abnormally."
In an agony laden voice, Ogbonnaya continued: "I don't
know how it started but we suspected or thought that Igwe
joined his mates to smoke all sorts of things. I cautioned
him to stop it if he was indulging in such act but there was
no difference. We used to beat him to stop smoking to
know if he would but to no avail. He started manifesting
madness about eight years ago. He was still in primary
school when it started; he was in Primary Four when he
broke loose. Because of the problem, he couldn't continue
with his education. I cannot really say if he brought it upon
himself by smoking certain substances or it is a problem
destined to come".
He said that the problem reached a crescendo when Igwe
burnt down his house. "He used to pack all sorts of rubbish
and dump in the house. It was impossible to chase him out
of the house because he used to wield cutlasses and wood,
threatening to harm anyone who gets close to him. At a
point, he had outgrown everybody. On a certain day, he set
the house ablaze and before people could come to fight the
fire, things had got out of hand. That was how the building
containing two rooms, a parlour and big verandah were
razed down. Thereafter, we became homeless, so I brought
my wife and kids to stay in a relation's place. That was
how we relocated."
Ani said that his daughter was okay until a certain man
from Nsukka in Enugu State came to seek her hand in
marriage. According to him, the man eloped with the girl,
adding that by the time she returned home, she had lost her
mind even as she nursed a baby.
His words: "In the case of Ozieme, there was a time she
travelled to Enugu to stay with her brother. There she
started a relationship with one man from Nsukka and they
agreed to marry. She brought the man home and introduced
him to us. After meeting with us, the man said that he was
going to prepare and come back for the formalization of the
relationship. She insisted on going with the man; we asked
her to wait for the man to go and come but she refused. We
didn't see the man again.
"When she was coming back, she came with a baby and
started behaving in a manner we could not understand. We
tried all we could to deal with the situation but to no avail.
This thing happened about five years ago and we have not
set eyes on the man ever since. She didn't have the
soundness of mind to breastfeed and properly care for the
baby and she died. Right now, she is heavily pregnant, she
will be putting to bed anytime and we do not know who is
responsible for the pregnancy.
"Again, another of my daughter who is married and a
seamstress is also behaving abnormally.
"I cannot explain how this problem came into the family.
From our parents, we did not experience any such thing. It
did not happen to my eldest brother, who had died."

Again ASUU rejects Presidency offer, says strike continues

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) again
rejected the offer by the Presidency put forward by the
Viice President Namadi Sambo yesterday at a meeting
to resolve the almost three-month-old strike by the
lecturers.
Also, ASUU Ibadan zone made up of University of Ibadan,
University of Lagos, Olabisi Onananjo University,
University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, Lagos State
University and Tai Solarin University of Education, Ijebu-
Ode, at a zonal meeting yesterday, resolved to continue with
the industrial action.
The acting Zonal Coordinator, Ibadan Zone, Dr. Karo
Ogbinaka said the strike entered its 88th day (yesterday),
saying the action has crippled public universities.
He said in spite of the spirited efforts of the union to
revamp the rot in the system, the government remained
adamant and intransigent in honouring the agreement it
entered into with ASUU in 2009.
"ASUU has demonstrated great commitment and patriotism
since 2006 when the negotiation started and culminated in
the 2009 agreement. It has allowed government to use its
agencies to verify the claims of decrepit infrastructure in the
university system. This resulted in the production of the
Needs Assessment document of 2012," Ogbinaka stated.
According to him, the meeting of Tuesday, September 19
with the vice president was an indication that the Federal
Government was merely paying lip service to education in
the country and deceiving the public on its commitment to
its transformation agenda.
Ogbinaka, who is the branch chairman of ASUU UNILAG,
assured Nigerians that it would not back-out in the struggle
for the emancipation of the people by ensuring that
government does what is right in the education sector.
"Our appeal to all patriotic Nigerians is for them to support
ASUU in this struggle to save our public education in
Nigeria and secure the future of this great country," he said.
During the Ibadan zone meeting which took place at
UNILAG, ASUU members resolved to continue with the
almost three-month-old industrial action until government
meets the demands of the union.
Some of the branch chairmen at the meeting told Daily Sun
that their various congresses, which held this week rejected
offer put forward by the vice president, insisting on full
implementation of the agreement.
Acting ASUU Chairman of OOU, Dr. Tunde Odulanmi,
ASUU UI branch Secretary, Dr. Deji Omole, told Daily
Sun that their congresses rejected the outcome of the
union's meeting with Sambo and voted to continue with the
strike.

Okada rider dives in front of trailer, SUV over N3,000 registration fee

THE Iyana Adeoyo end of Ring Road, Ibadan, the Oyo
State capital, was thrown into confusion on Thursday, at
about 2:30 p.m when an unidentified man in his thirties,
attempted to kill himself by throwing himself at oncoming
articulated vehicles.
Nigerian Tribune investigations revealed that the man, an
Okada rider, had been apprehended by officers of the Oyo
State commercial vehicle registration unit who had, upon
checking his papers, alleged that they were fake.
The seizure of the Okada man's motorcycle had shocked
him.
He pleaded vehemently that he was not aware that the
papers were not genuine.
However, his pleas were said to have fallen on deaf ears, a
situation which turned ugly, when the man attempted
suicide as he flung himself under an articulated vehicle, and
then, a SUV.
His attempt, however, was futile as onlookers rescued him
each time he did so.
He later went into shock and started foaming from the
mouth, after which some policemen arrived and carried him
to the Adeoyo State Hospital.

The Highest Paid Nigerian Hip Hop Artistes And How Much They Charge

Award-winning singing duo, Peter and Paul Okoye
famously known as P-Square are the highest paid hip-hop
artistes right now, ENCOMIUM Weekly findings have
revealed. The Okoyes are currently charging between N9
and N10 million for a show within Nigeria…..
Apart from information gathered from the source close to
the duo, independent music promoters/artiste managers also
confirmed this, declaring the Koko master, D'Banj as the
second highest paid artiste. The DB Record boss charges
between N6 and N7 million as a standard show fee.
"Before the split of Mo'Hits, it used to be D'Banj. When
D'Banj was charging between N7 and N8 million, P-
Square's fee was N5 million", a veteran music manager
affirmed, adding, "Right now, it's P-Square."
The afro-pop king, 2Face Idibia is the third highest paid.
Although, 2Face's performance fee has not been consistent,
it's within N5 and N6 million.
Industry sources told ENCOMIUM Weekly that 2Baba, as
he's fondly addressed, easily adjust fees because of the love
he has for fans. "I agreed that he's the third because he
loves what he knows how to do best than the money. He's
man of the people and he loves to reach out to the people.
He's always happy when he's on stage."
Star Boyz owner, Wizkid, who stormed the industry three
years ago, rose to become the fourth highest paid music
star, collecting between N4 and N5 million. Although, the
Jaiye Jaiye artiste has not featured in any big show in recent
times, he also told ENCOMIUM Weekly in a recent
interview that he charges N4 to N5 million.
Female singer, Omawumi Megbele is the highest paid
female star. She collects N3 million alongside some male
artistes, including Flavour, Timayah and the rave of the
moment, Olamide. Others are Darey Art Alade, Duncan
Mighty, and Chocolate Music artistes, M.I and Ice-Prince.
The likes of Kukere crooner, Iyanya, Davido, Wande Coal
and Tiwa Savage are in the league of artistes that go for
N2.5 million, while D'Prince, Dr.Sid and one time highest
earningartiste, 9ice collect N2 million respectively.
Aside artistes that still receive less than N1 million, Naeto
C and Waje's fee is N1.5 million.
"Basically, each artiste has a standard fee for gigs, concerts
but for private parties such as birthday, wedding, etc, it
varies. Some people would call for reduction simply
because they are individuals, not brands. It depends on the
artistes whether to accept or not. What I know is that it's
always fixed", said an artiste manager.
1- Psquare – N10million
2- D'Banj – N 8million
3- 2Face – N6million
4- Wizkid – N5million
5- Omawumi, Darey, Duncan Mighty,Olamide, Timaya,
Flavour, M.I, Ice-Prince – N3 million
Others…
6 – Iyanya, Davido, Wande Coal, Tiwa Savage – N2.5
million
7 – 9ice, D'Prince, Dr. Sid – N2 million
8 – Naeto C, Waje – N1.5 million

Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities,
SSANU, will tomorrow join the Academic Staff Union
of Universities, ASUU on strike as the union said it has
mobilized its members across the country to embark on
industrial action over alleged stoppage of their salaries
for two months.
In a letter dated 27 September, 2013, and addressed to
its branch chairmen in all the universities in the
country, SSANU directed its members to stay away
from work from tomorrow until the salaries are fully
paid.
The President of SSANU, Comrade Samson Ugwoke,
said the strike will be total, while the General

stay at home from tomorrow, Comrade Promise
Adewusi, said no member should go back to work until
a counter directive was given.
Adewusi stated that the union took the decision
following its letters to the vice-chancellors in
universities, the Secretary to the Government of the
Federation, Senator Anyim Pius Anyim, Ministers of
Labour and Productivity, Chief Emeka Wogu and
Education, Nyesom Wike, as well as the Executive
Secretary, National Universities Commission, Prof.

Governor Fashola Should Not Have Apologised To Igbos – Femi Fani Kayode

There can be little doubt that the relocation of the 19
Igbo destitutes from Lagos state a few months ago was a
lawful exercise and that it was done in the interest of
Lagos State.
Consequently I do not believe that Governor Babatunde
Raji Fashola ought to have tendered any form of
apology whatsoever to the Igbo for what he did.
The only redeeming factor is the fact that the apology
was obviously designed simply to calm frayed nerves
and I commend Fashola for that gesture if nothing else. I
say this because my understanding is that he apologized
NOT for the deportation itself but for ''the
misunderstanding that arose from it''. There is a world of
difference between the two.
I also commend him for admonishing the Igbo to
develop their own region and to decide whether they are
''Igbo before they are Nigerians or Nigerians before they
are Igbo''.
For the purposes of clarification the debate that has been
raging in the land for the last two months, though
sparked off by Fashola's relocations, was more about the
curious claim that Lagos state was ''no man's land''
which the Igbo jointly own with the Yoruba and which
they had developed, and are indeed still developing, with
their money and nothing else.
Fashola and others have said publicly that it is ''absurd''
and ''insulting'' for anyone to call Lagos state ''no-man's
land'' and that is good enough for me.
As long as he did not apologize for saying that, I have
no problem with whatever he may or may not have said
about the deportations even though, had I been governor,
I would have handled it differently.
The truth is that the Yoruba way is to apologize not only
when you are wrong but also when you are right if you
believe that the other party has been badly hurt by your
actions.
Yet to those from outside Yoruba land that do not share
that disposition, that do not understand that spirit and
that cannot even begin to comprehend it, an apology is
nothing less than an admission of guilt and wrong- doing
and a trophy of triumph to those whom it is offered.
It is for this reason that I believe that it was wrong for
Fashola to apologize and that it is important for us to
consider the long term implications of what he has done.
The truth is that in life perception counts for everything.
And rightly or wrongly the perception that most people
have, particularly amongst the Igbo, is that Fashola has
indeed apologized for the deportations.
This perception is supported by misleading newspaper
headlines which were drafted and written by journalists
who did not bother to read the text or properly decipher
the statement.
Whether anyone likes it or not this latest development is
viewed as a great triumph for the hardline Igbo
nationalists and the Governor Peter Obi's of this world
who honestly believe that the Igbo have some kind of
special rights or special status in Lagos and indeed in
Yoruba land.
They say and do things in Lagos and other parts of the
west that they dare not do in the north and that they will
never allow our people to do in the east.
This is because they fear the northerners who have often
put them in their place when they cross the line but they
have nothing but contempt for us.
Fashola has now given those within the Igbo community
that have this mindset far more legitimacy, strength and
confidence.
In any case now that dishing out apologies is the order of
the day and he has set the precedent, the question has to
be asked- will Peter Obi take a cue from that, be a
gentleman and apologize for deporting the people of
Akwa Ibom from his Anambra state as well?
Is Obi that reasonable or charitable? Do those that think
like him believe that what is good for the goose is good
for the gander?
I doubt it very much.
Again will Fashola apologize to the numerous
northerners that he deported from Lagos as well and will
he apologize to his Yoruba kith and kin from Oyo and
Osun for deporting them too?
I really do wonder how far this new-found large-
heartedness and seasonal expression of regrets will go.
Will it be spread everywhere or is it exclusively reserved
for the Igbo?
More importantly, in the spirit of this new
rapprochement, will Fashola secretly concede portions of
Lagos state and Yoruba land to them as well? Will he
take my dear egbon and former cabinet colleague,
Senator Adeseye Ogunlewe's counsel, and
wholeheartedly accept the interesting notion that the
Igbo have ''married all our daughters'' in idungaran and
isale-eko and that we should therefore give all our land
and territory to them?
Will he give up the patrimony of his people all in the
name of trying to appease the Igbo and get their votes
for the APC in the upcoming governorship election in
Anambra state?
If that is the plan I doubt that it will work because they
are a pretty unforgiving lot. The more you give the more
they will ask for and at the end of the day you will end
up losing far more than you gain.
Governor Chris Ngige, who is an amiable gentleman and
one of the most decent, accommodating, liberal,
detribalized and civilized people that I know from the
east, will gain nothing from this and sadly the person
that will gain from it will be the hardline, Igbo centric
Peter Obi and his APGA candidate in November's
gubernatorial election in Anambra state.
People like Fashola need to understand that sometimes in
trying to play the generous statesman and the kind-
hearted omoluwabi we end up being taken for granted
and making fools of ourselves.
You only apologise to those who will appreciate it, who
do not necessarily see it as an admission of guilt and who
will not misconstrue it as weakness.
This is because the display of weakness by any leader, no
matter how well-liked, only attracts impudence and
aggression from those who have a hidden agenda.
A word is enough for the wise.
If I were Governor of Lagos state I would never have
apologized for the execution of a legitimate and lawful
exercise which was absolutely necessary and which was
done in the interests of my state and my people, no
matter how many cows I had been offered or given by
the kinsmen of those affected.
What Fashola has done, albeit inadvertently, is to betray
those amongst his Yoruba kith and kin that stood by him
and defended him when he took that historic and
controversial decision to deport the Igbo destitute.
He has also fuelled the erroneous impression that is held
by most of the Igbo that the Yoruba people and their
leaders are bumbling and inconsistent cowards that
cannot stand firm when put under pressure and when
faced with threats and hardship.
This is sad and unfortunate because that is not who or
what we are. Though we cherish and often manifest the
omoluwabi spirit, the Yoruba are also a lion-hearted
people- we are slow to anger but irresistible in battle.
We are as constant as the northern star even though we
are accommodating and generous.
I have immense respect for Fashola and I happen to have
a soft spot for him but I believe that his behavior is a
clear U-turn and that it represents a double standard, a
capitulation of values and a revocation of principle.
You don't apologize for government policy just to
appease a certain group of people no matter how
bellicose, violent, loud and aggressive they may be.
It is better to lose a million elections outside Yoruba
land than to concede even one inch of Yoruba territory
to those that seek to lay claim to that which is not
theirs.
A word is enough for the wise.

UN Office On Drugs Marvel At Size Of Hemp Farm Discovered By NDLEA In Ekiti

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency
(NDLEA) on Friday discovered a 600-acre hemp farm
at Ode-Ekiti in the Gbonyin Local Government Area of
Ekiti.
The Commandant of the NDLEA in Ekiti, Mr Dele
Akingbade, in Ado-Ekiti said that the hemp farm was
the largest individually-owned hemp farm in Ekiti.
Akingbade said that the cost of the hemp farm was too
huge to be determined immediately.
He described the discovery of the farm as one of the
"biggest feats" of the agency in the state.
Akingbade said the agency made the discovery on a vast
expanse of land on July 24.
According to him, the discovery follows a tip-off by
concerned members of the public.
The NDLEA chief said that four suspects, all men,
were apprehended in connection with the discovery.
Akingbade said that four suspects were arrested while
working on the farm.
He said that the suspects, who confessed to being
labourers, disclosed that the owner of the farm paid

Graphic photos: Train kills man (cuts him into pieces) in Oshodi

Some eyewitnesses said the man threw himself in front of
the train, some said he was just walking across the railway
track with his friends when a train coming from Agege
approached early yesterday morning around the Bolade area
of Oshodi. Don't know which one is accurate but there's one
fact; the unidentified man was crushed into pieces by the
train. When I say into pieces, I mean head off, hand off,
leg off, cut into two from the stomach. Horrific!

ASUU Strike Will Soon Be Called Off – NUC Prof. Julius Okojie

Executive Secretary of the National Universities
Commission (NUC), Prof. Julius Okojie, says he is
confident that the lingering strike by the Academic
Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) will soon be called
off.
Speaking, Wednesday, in Abuja, at a media parley with
journalists, Okojie said the commission was doing
everything within its powers to ensure a speedy
resolution of the issues raised by ASUU so that students
could return to school.
"We are part of the system and we understand the
issues, we are meeting with members of the union all
the time and the issues are being tackled.
"So, we are optimistic the strike will soon be called off
and our children can go back to school in the shortest
possible time," he said.
In reaction to the call by ASUU for NUC to be
scrapped, Okojie said "the call is not in good faith as
the commission has not gone to sleep over its duties".
Also speaking on the recurrent disagreements between
the commission and some professional bodies over
accreditation and running of certain courses by some
universities, Okojie acknowledged that there were
issues that needed to be resolved between both parties.
"There is no country in the world where regulatory
bodies and professional bodies go to regulate at the
same time.
"So, it is true we are having problems with professional
bodies in carrying out our mandate, but the issues too
will soon be resolved and we can move on.
The executive secretary, who said that the commission
had closed many faculties not fit to run courses in
certain universities, admitted that; "it is not easy to be a
regulator''.
According to him, the commission was "silently
regulating the system'' having to also pay professional
fees and encourage professors to do accreditation.

NASU To Start Nationwide Strike Next Week

The deplorable state of the university system since
members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities
(ASUU) embarked on an indefinite strike to demand
that the government make good its promises as stated in
the 2009 agreement the government had with the union,
may even go worse as the Non-Academic Staff Union
of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU),
Tuesday threatened to commence a nationwide strike
from next week.
National General Secretary of the union, Mr. Peters
Adeyemi, dropped the hint in Ilorin, the Kwara State
capital, yesterday during the National Executive
Council (NEC) meeting of the union.
According to him, "The decision to embark on the
nationwide strike is due to the fact that the members of
the union had not been paid for two months despite
working to keep university system running during the
ongoing ASUU strike."
He said: "NASU will start its own strike action next
week because we have been working and government
has refused to pay our salaries, and for us, it does not
make sense to continue to keep the system running
when we are not paid."
He added: "The reason for this is not known to us.
Workers in all federal universities are not paid their
salaries right now and that's a big challenge.
Government has not paid our salary for August and as
we are talking now, today is September 24, they are
effectively owing us two months salary and there's no
way we can continue to do this work on empty
stomach, while they run around the globe with heavy
stomach."
The NASU General Secretary, who said no reason was
adduced for their non-payment, added, "the unfortunate
thing is that they have no explanation for non-payment
of our salaries.
"That's enough patience on our part despite the fact that
we have our grouse before with the federal government;
that things are not running well. But we think as
Nigerians and parents, we don't have to unnecessarily
ground the system. But if you take this our maturity
and level-headedness to mean stupidity, them of course,
people that complain that we in the university system
have ruined the future of students by going on too
many strikes imposed on us by government will have
no reason not to understand, if we go on our own strike
next week," he stressed
Also speaking, the national president of NASU, Mr.
Ladi Iliya, blamed the National Assembly for fighting
on their political interest and future at the expense of
welfare of Nigerians.
The NASU president, who said the National Assembly
should have deliberated on issue of persistent insecurity
and ASUU strike when it resume session, described the
attitude of the legislators as shameful.

A Whale Vomit is Worth £50,000

A British man has been offered 50,000 euros for a
strange-smelling rock his dog found on a beach, which
is likely a rare form of whale vomit used in perfumes,
the BBC reported Thursday.
Ken Wilman was walking his dog Madge in the coastal
town of Morecambe in northwest England when she
began "póking at a rather large stone" with a waxy
texture and yellowish colour.
At first he left it on the beach, but "something triggered
in my mind", Wilman said, prompting him to go back
and retrieve the object, which he believes is a piece of
ambergris, a substance found in the digestive systems of
spérm whales.
Whales sometimes spew up ambergris, which floats on
water and has been highly prized for centuries. It is
used in perfume-making for the musky fragrance it
acquires as it ages — but newer ambergris is foul-
smelling.
"When I picked it up and smelled it I put it back down
again and I thought 'urgh'," Wilman told the BBC. "It
has a musky smell, but the more you smell it the nicer
the smell becomes."
He is waiting for tests to confirm his find is ambergris,
nicknamed "floating gold", but says he has been offered
50,000 euros (£43,000, $68,000) for it by a French
dealer.
"It's worth so much because of its particular
properties," Andrew Kitchener, principal curator of
vertebrates at the National Museum of Scotland, told
the broadcaster. "It's a very important base for
perfumes and it's hard to find any artificial substitute
for it."
The substance gets a mention in the classic 1851
whaling novel Moby man-hood, where author Herman
Melville writes: "Who would think, then, that such fine
ladies and gentlemen should regale themselves with an
essence found in the inglorious bowels of a sick whale!
Yet so it is."

How Brains Could Be Copied To Computers

Could your brain keep on living even after your body
dies? Sounds like science fiction, but celebrated
theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking recently
suggested that technology could make it possible.
"I think the brain is like a program in the mind, which
is like a computer," Hawking said last week during an
appearance at the Cambridge Film Festival, The
Telegraph reported. "So it's theoretically possible to
copy the brain on to a computer and so provide a form
of life after death."
He acknowledged that such a feat lies "beyond our
present capabilities," adding that "the conventional
afterlife is a fairy tale for people afraid of the dark."
Hawking, 71, made the remarks in conjunction with the
premiere of a new documentary about his life.
He has spoken previously about what he calls the "fairy
story" of heaven and the afterlife. Likening thehuman
brain to a computer whose components will fail, he
said, "There is no heaven or afterlife for broken-down
computers."
Some people are actively working to develop
technology that would permit the migration of brain
functions into a computer. Russian multi-millionaire
Dmitry Itskov, for one, hopes someday to upload the
contents of a brain into a lifelike robot body as part of
his 2045 Initiative, The New York Times reported
recently.
A separate research group, called the Brain Preservation
Foundation, is working to develop a process to preserve
the brain along with its memories, emotions and
consciousness. Called chemical fixation and plastic
embedding, the process involves converting the brain
into plastic, carving it up into tiny slices, and then
reconstructing its three-dimensional structure in a
computer.

I Became A Policeman Because Of Free Transportation – Fake Policeman

A mild drama unfolded at the Ikotun Police Division after
a 48-year-old fake policeman rolled on the floor and
cried, begging to be released.
The suspect, identified as Felix Braimoh, who was
arrested in Ejigbo area of Lagos, said he was forced to
impersonate a policeman to feed his children and also
enjoy free transportation around Lagos.
Clad in a Mobile Police trousers and a beret, the father
of five reportedly boarded a motorcycle from Cele Bus
Stop, along Oshodi/Apapa expressway, to Ikotun.
However, on reaching Ejigbo the motorcycle rider, a
Police Corporal, engaged Briamoh in a conversation
about his division.
His inability to give a proper response aroused the
suspicion of the rider, who reportedly stopped the
motorbike and confronted Braimoh.
Just then, a Police patrol team from Ikotun Division
stopped to question both men and took them to the
station.
During interrogation, Braimoh reportedly disclosed that
he was not a policeman.
Asked where he got the police uniform from, Braimoh
said: "A friend gave them to me.
"The pair of trousers is a mobile Police's, the boots
belong to a Man O' War official, while I bought the
beret from the market." [Vanguard]

“I Am Alive & Will Only Die At The Appointed Time”

– Dead Boko Haram Leader, Shekau
Appears In New Video
Leader of the most dreaded and wanted Boko
Haram Terrorists, Abubakar Shekau, today,
Wednesday, said the Nigerian Military should bury
itself in shame because he is alive.
Shekau also claimed responsibility of Tuesday, 17th
September, 2013 attacks in Benisheik, Borno State
where over 160 people were either shot dead
or slaughtered and hundreds of houses burnt.
The then Joint Task Force (JTF) spokesman in Borno
State, Lt Col Sagir Musa, had issued a statement on
19th August, 2013 to the effect
that "Intelligence report available to the Joint Task
Force (JTF) Operation Restore Order revealed that
Abubakar Shekau, the most dreaded and wanted
terrorists leader may have died.
He died of gunshots wounds received in an
encounter with the JTF in one of their camps in
Sambisa Forest on 30th June, 2013.
"Shekau was mortally wounded in the encounter
and was sneaked into Amitchide-a border
community in Cameroon for treatment from which
he never recovered," the JTF statement said.
But in the latest video, Shekau who appeared in
military camouflage uniform, seated and surrounded by
hooded insurgents said "Here I am, alive, hale and
hearty.
Sagir Musa should bury himself in shame,
President Jonathan (of Nigeria) should bury himself in
shame, President Obama (of United States of America)
should bury himself in shame, and President Francois
Hollande (of France) should bury himself in shame,
Queen Elizabeth (of England) should bury herself in
shame," he said.
According to Shekau, "They said I am dead, but here
I am. The world should know that I am alive and
will only die at the appointed time. Everybody should
be judged according to the dictates of his conscience.
What I am doing is written in the Holy Qur'an and the
Hadith and I will not stop. I challenge all the clerics of
the world to question my deeds. Those underrating my
capacity should have a re-think. I will never
allow democracy to thrive.
"The concept of Government of the people by the
people for the people will never be possible and will
never exist. Democracy shall be replaced only by the
government of Allah, from Allah and for Allah," he
said.
He said the Nigerian military will never subdue his
group. "Nigerian soldiers are late. After killing
many of them in Monguno and Benisheik, we have
snatched their armoured carriers and Hilux van and
then hoisted Islamic flags on them. We now move
freely with them," he said.

Chinese man has new nose grown on his forehead after losing his nose in a car crash

A 22 year old Chinese man named Xiaolian has had a new
nose grown on his forehead after loosing his original nose
in a car accident. Xiaolian had the treatment to create a
replacement for his original nose which was infected and
deformed following the accident in 2012. He actually left
his damaged nose unattended to after the accident which
led to the infection and eventual deformity, leaving the
surgeons unable to repair it.
Surgeons in China were left with no option than to create
another nose for the man to breathe properly and then
transplant it to the original place. The nose was created by
placing a skin tissue expander onto Xiaolian's forehead.
This was cut into the shape of a nose and was supported by
cartilage taken from the man's ribs. Continue...
Surgeons say that the nose has developed well and that the
transplant surgery will be carried out soon.

Hermaphrodite Lynched By Crowd In Sapele, Delta State

A
man in his late 40s, who refused to utter a word despite
the hysteria his presence generated, was almost lynched
by a mob but for the intervention of police and other
security agents.
The man, whose name could not be ascertained was
discovered to possess a full grown pair of br**sts,
which dangled from his chest, just like those of a young
woman.
An angry mob was going for the kill when security
operatives were quickly drafted to the scene. Their
(mob) grouse was that it was strange and unacceptable
that a man would possess dual s*x organs.
Young men near a filling station at the Sapele-Warri/
New Road junction tore the man's clothes, and revealed
a very small male organ, allegedly with no scrotum –
which to them suggested that he was a hermaphrodite.
Saturday Tribune gathered from some onlookers who
claimed to know the man that he had been seeking
spiritual solutions to his problem by moving from one
church to another.
It was further learnt that at one of the churches, he
started manifesting some strange behaviours while for
some time he hid his male and female s*xual organs
from church officials who later found out his status as a
hermaphrodite.
The voice and face of the man were masculine even as
he was said to also have female reproductive organs.
Men of the Nigeria Police in Sapele, and the other
security operatives who were drafted to scene, quickly
dislodged the irate mob, who were taking turns to
fiddle with the man's s*x organs, ostensibly to further
confirm their suspicions that the man was really a freak.
He was thereafter spirited away by the police to the
Sapele Police Station for protective custody and
investigations….very sad..

27-Year-Old Man Breaks Into ATM, Steals N6.8 Million

The Police Command in the FCT have begun
investigation into the alleged theft of N6.8 million
from the ATM of a bank at Jabi District, Abuja, on
Saturday.
DSP Altine Daniel, the command's spokesperson, who
disclosed this on Tuesday in an interview with the News
Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja, said that a suspect
had been arrested in connection with the theft.
He said that the 27-year-old suspect (name withheld),
allegedly broke into the ATM belonging to one of the
old generation banks and stole the money.
Daniel, however, said that the amount that was stolen
was recovered "intact" from the suspect after he was
arrested in the premises of the bank.
"On Sept. 21, at about 10 a.m., some staff of the
bank came to report at our office at Utako that
their ATM had problem.
"When our men moved to the scene and started
looking for clues and anything that will assist them
in their investigation, they noticed that the CCTV
monitor room had been tampered with.
"After a thorough search, they also noticed that the
door of the toilet in the room was locked from
within and when they opened it, they found
somebody seated.
"The suspect was picked up and taken to the station
where he confessed to the crime," she said.
Daniel said the suspect claimed to have learned the act
of opening safe from the "youtube" (Internet) and
thereafter, bought some tools, including screw driver
and pliers, to carry out the act.
She alleged that the suspect removed N6.87 million
from the ATM and packed them in bags before his
arrest.
"Investigations into the case has started and we are
trying to find out if he acted alone or he has some
accomplices," she said.

Omotola Falls Face Flat At Lagos Airport, Blames Minister, Nigerian Government

According to tweets emanating from Nollywood diva,
Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde's Twitter handle, she just
returned back to the country and that is no news we
know but what however is, she fell face flat at the
arrival hall of the Lagos airport apparently due to non-
functional escalator and she blames the minister of
aviation, Stella Oduah and the Nigerian government for
her fall.
The airport which recently underwent a facelift to the
admiration of Nigerians has however come under sharp
criticism from users and experts alike who argued that
the floors shouldn't have been paved in smooth tiles as
it could be slippery and dangerous when wet – and they
just got proved right with Omosexy's fall.

ASUU says strike will improve education sector

The President, Academic Staff Union of Universities
(ASUU), Dr Nasir Fagge, said on Tuesday that the current
strike by lecturers of public universities in the country was a
sacrifice for better things to come.
Fagge told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos
that unless the deficits in the education sector, especially the
university system, were addressed once and for all, there
would be no development.
NAN reports that the lecturers, under the aegis of ASUU,
had on June 30 embarked on what it had described as
comprehensive, total and indefinite strike in public
universities across the country.
The lecturers are asking for the implementation of some
aspects of an agreement they jointly entered into with the
Federal government in 2009.
According to Fagge, it is regrettable that the strike is
protracted, and that the decision of ASUU to remain
adamant until its demands are fully met can seem
uncomfortable and worrisome.
He said that the industrial action was a sacrifice needed to
salvage the entire economy of the country.
"I sincerely want to call on all concerned, especially
students and parents, to bear with us, as well as join hands
with us in the struggle to right the wrongs in our education
sector once and for all, for the good of us all and that of the
country.
"I know it is quite a difficult time for us but I also want to
state that what we are doing is for our own good, as well as
ensure that strikes become rare, as a weapon to get things
done in our system.
"We also want to ensure that there is sincerity and respect
for mutual agreements by parties in order to attain a
common goal for the good of our dear country," he said.
Fagge, however, lauded the supervising education Minister,
Chief Nyesom Wike, for finding time to meet with the
Executive Committee of ASUU, in a bid to find a lasting
solution to the protracted strike.
The unionist also commended the Committee of Vice-
Chancellors and other stakeholders for their concern in
attempts to end the strike.
He noted that such was the spirit needed to ensure that
nobody felt cheated and that what the lecturers were asking
for was truly for the advancement of the course of the
country.
According to Fagge, with the current attempts by the
various stakeholders, he is optimistic that there will soon be
a mutual understanding between the parties.
"I think with the various meetings we have held with the
concerned stakeholders, I am optimistic that there will soon
be a way out and our demands met, so that in the shortest
possible time, we will get the required development that
will make us compete favourably within the comity of
nations.
"For us in the academic communities, we strongly wish
government should look into the deficit of insincerity in our
system, teaching facilities, in order for us to be able to
deliver on our mandate.
"Majority of our children and wards in this country do
attend these public universities and we cannot afford to fold
our hands and watch them study under deplorable
conditions, while those who can afford sending their
children abroad feel little or no concern about it," he said.
On the appointment of ministers to replace the recently
sacked ones, Fagge suggested that it should be hinged
strictly on the basis of merit.
"We need people who will come in with confidence of the
power that be in terms of tackling challenges; be up and
doing and would always want to come up with new
approaches to addressing problems," he said. (NAN)

Court Fines School Teacher For Impregnating Student

An Abuja Customary Court sitting at Jiwa, yesterday
ordered one William Thomas, a school teacher to pay N40,
000 as damages for impregnating a secondary school student
out of wedlock.
He was also ordered by the judge to pay a monthly
maintenance fee of N10, 000 for the baby's upkeep.
Thomas was arraigned following a complaint by the father
of the girl, who had accused him of unlawfully putting his
25 year-old daughter in the family way without parental
consent.
The girl's father said the action had jeopardized the
education of the girl, a secondary school student even as the
accused had abandoned her while she carried the pregnancy.
He said he had on two different occasions, with police
intervention, tried to end the relationship between the two
unsuccessfully, adding that he had also earlier taken the case
to court claiming N5m as damages. When the matter was
read to the accused, he pleaded guilty, and asked for
leniency.
In her ruling, Judge A'isha Muhammad, ordered the convict
to pay the sum of N20,000 to the lady for expenses incurred
during her pregnancy and another N20,000 for delivery.
She also ordered that he should pay an additional N10,000
monthly for the baby's upkeep for the next two years.

Floods wreak havoc in Ibadan, kill two

The rain that fell for almost two days in Ibadan, the
Oyo State capital, has claimed lives of two people
and destroyed property.
The rain began on Sunday and continued till Monday
night, sending panic through the flood-prone city.
The Oluyole Local Government Area of the state was
mostly affected by the downpour.
Flood wreaked havoc in the Arapaja area, opposite
the Ibadan/Lagos Expressway and Akala new
extension as motorists who risked wading through
the flood lost control of their vehicles. Unknown to
some motorists, the flood had swept off a linking
bridge. Commercial tricyclists and motorcyclists were
said to have fallen victims. Eye witnesses said two
people were swept away in the area.
Police Public Relations Officer, Oyo State Command,
Olabisi Ilobanafor, confirmed the death of an aged
man and a commercial motorcyclist. She said the
bodies of the two unnamed victims were recovered
by rescue workers.
Ilobanafor said the corpses were recovered around
8.15a.m. on Tuesday near Challenge Police Station.
"The old man's name was unknown. He was going in
the rain and his leg slipped causing him to fall, hit his
head on a stone and he died on the spot," she said.
Our correspondent reports that rescue workers from
the fire service department in the state were seen on
Monday night searching for victims in the river that
runs across the community.

Things You Can Do With A Toothpaste That You Never Knew

The primary function of toothpaste is to maintain oral
health; it keeps the cavities away and protects you from
gum diseases. It is recommended to brush your teeth twice
a day for at least 3 minutes. Ok! Enough with the use of
toothpaste for teeth! It's about time you take it out of your
washroom and use it around your home. Don't know how?
Here is how you can make use of this "Magic tube":

1. Tooth paste as a hand sanitizer
Want to make your hands germ free? Take a drop of
toothpaste and mix it with a little water, apply this mixture
to your hands. The mixture would not only work as a
disinfectant but would also help you get rid of the dreadful
smell of the onions and garlic if you have diced one.
Piano Cleaner
Constant tickling on the ivory piano keys can turn them
dirty. You can clean them up, the same way you clean your
teeth. All you need is a brush and toothpaste, brush the keys
of the piano well and then rub them with a damp cloth. If
toothpaste can work on human teeth, it can also work well
on elephant's teeth (ivory). Toothpaste is equally good as a
cleaner for modern pianos with plastic keys.

2. Fix Nail Holes
We know nail holes make your walls look bad and you
might need some professional help to fix them. Wait! Try
toothpaste. You can easily fill the nail holes with
toothpaste, let it dry and touch it up with paint. Problem
solved!

3. Excellent Stain Remover for Clothes
Ink, lipstick, ketchup! Dropped them on clothes? Don't
worry! Toothpaste will make these stains vanish in a
minute. Just apply some tooth paste on these tough stains,
scrub them, rinse well and poof! They are gone.
You can even clean up your carpet stains with the help of
toothpaste in the same way.

4. Quick Remedy for Pimples
Need a quick remedy to treat those pimples? Simple! Apply
toothpaste on the pimple at night and wash it in the
morning. By morning, it will be gone. Toothpaste
effectively absorbs the oil from the pimples, making them
dry and flattens them. Keep in mind that this remedy
shouldn't be used more than once a week as it can make
your skin over dry. Also do a patch test before applying as
some people might get skin irritation by using it.

5. Makes your CDs Scratch less
Oops! There's a scratch on your important CD. No
problem! Put some toothpaste on it and wipe it off with a
piece of clean cloth.

6. Tooth paste as Jewelry and Cutlery Cleaner
Now you don't need to take your gold and diamond
jewelry to the jewelry store to get them polished when
you have toothpaste at your home. Take some
toothpaste and brush your piece of jewelry with an old
tooth brush, rinse with water. It will make them
sparkling clean. You can clean up your silver cutlery in
the similar way.

7. Can serve as your shoe polish
Toothpaste can serve as your shoe polish. It can help
remove scuffs from your leather shoes. Apply some of it on
the area that has been scuffed and rub it with a soft piece of
cloth, then wipe off with a clean damp cloth. Your shoes
will turn good as new. It can also clean the rubber area of
your fleets or sneakers.

8. Works as crayon remover from walls

to satisfy your cravings and your body!
3. No Sodium!
Avoid or minimise salt, it might sound difficult but it is
certainly a small sacrifice for a slim body. Just flavor
your food with other herbs and spices instead. Try a
low sodium salsa spread on bread instead of sour cream
and butter; this will not only taste good but also feel
good on your body.
4. Have a Sexy Saturday!
Wondering what it can do in a weight loss plan? Well,
if you are married then make this weekend a sexy
weekend. Plan a hot makeout date with your beloved.

buster, isn't it?
5. Take the 'Bitter but Better' Route
It is time to cut the sugar. Replace the processed foods
full of sugar and if you are fond of spices then chili
sauces offer a lot of flavor without calories. Spicy food
increases body's metabolic rate which makes you digest
your food faster.
6. Eat, Eat and Eat!
Yes! It is a myth that skipping meals makes you slim.
The fact is when you do not eat; it becomes difficult for
your body to find food. Thus, in order to protect you
from starving; Your body slows down your metabolism
and as a result, you burn fat at a slow pace. The next
meal (if you skip breakfast then your lunch) will all be
stored as fat. This way you are indirectly gaining
weight instead of losing. The right way is to eat
regularly throughout these 7 days and split your meals.
7. Tasty Drinks: just for you!
The healthiest drink in this 7 day plan is 'Water'. Drink
plenty of water each day along with natural juices. No
artificial juices and soft drinks. If you are fond of milk
then take low-fat or skimmed milk. All these liquids
will create a feeling of satiety when consumed.
