Fayose Calls For Street Jubilation As APC Lawmakers End Tenure

The Ekiti state Governor, Ayodele Fayose, has called out his supporters to rejoice with him on the streets today over the expiration of the term of the 19 All Progressives Congress, APC, who had been at loggerheads to impeach him.

The APC lawmakers had on April 4, 2015 issued a notice of impeachment to Fayose, citing cases of abuse of office and gross misconduct.
The lawmakers were, however, met with resistance as PDP members blocked all entry points into the state in order to avoid human and vehicular movement into the state.
Finally, as their tenure ended, Fayose called on citizens to jubilate withh him. "I want to thank the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, members, commercial drivers and motorcyclists, market men and women and citizens of this state for their continued support for me while the face-off lasted.

"With the expiration of their tenure, there is relief for me and my administration, and it is now time to perform my duties as governor of the state. In view of my travail in the hands of the outgone lawmakers, reprieve has now come to my government and I can now feel like a governor.

"By tomorrow, Friday, June 5, (today) I shall be embarking on a town procession in Ado Ekiti to thank my people for their support. I want you to meet me at Fajuyi Park where I am going to commence the procession and move around to give glory to God and humanity." Fayose said.

20 UNN Students Died In Car Accident While Travelling (photos)

TWENTY students of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Enugu State, were feared dead in a multiple road accident late on Tuesday, eyewitnesses said on Wednesday.

Our correspondent learnt that the victims met their deaths on the Nsukka-9th Mile Expressway while travelling to their homes in a commercial mass transit bus after the UNN authorities had directed the students to embark on a compulsory two-week break.

A statement by the university's Chief Public Relations Officer, Okwun Omeaku, had directed the students to vacate the school with immediate effect.

Although the UNN management had described the closure as a "mid-semester break", students told our correspondent that the school was shut to avert an action said to have been planned by the students to protest the lack of electricity and water in their hostels.

The students had been directed to vacate their hostels before 6:00 pm on Tuesday.

Though the Enugu State Police Command said only three undergraduates died in the accident, eyewitnesses said no fewer than 20 students of the UNN perished in the accident.

Police Public Relations Officer, Enugu State Police Command, Ebere Amaraizu, in a statement made available to journalists, said apart from the three who lost their lives, five other students sustained injuries in the accident.

Amaraizu said, "Three persons have been confirmed dead while five others sustained various degrees of injuries. The injured are being attended to at Our Saviour Hospital, 9th Mile Corner, Ngwo, while the dead bodies are also deposited at the same hospital mortuary.

"The auto crash involved a diesel truck with registration number AWK 311 XB, which is believed to have lost control as a result of suspected brake failure and hit two buses with registration numbers UWN 406 XA and UWN 57 XA and also a motorcycle."

Before the closure of their school on Tuesday, our correspondent learnt that the students had planned to embark on a demonstration over the lack of electricity and water in their hostels.

It was learnt that the planned demonstration was to take place within the week.

A student, who pleaded anonymity, had told our correspondent that there had been acute water scarcity and zero power supply in their hostels for a very long time.

Choirmaster Rapes Female Chorister In Lagos

A bricklayer and choirmaster, Adewale Babalola, who allegedly had unlawful carnal knowledge of a 16-year-old chorister in his church, was on Thursday brought before a Yaba Chief Magistrates' Court in Lagos.

The accused, 36, who lives at No. 11, Maxwell Ijeh St., Aguda in Surulere area of Lagos, is facing a charge of unlawful sexual intercourse.

According to the prosecutor, ASP Godwin Anyanwu, the accused committed the offence on Dec. 2, 2014 at his apartment.

He said the accused took undue advantage of his relationship with the teenager as her choirmaster at Christ Our Light Glory Church, Sanya in Surulere, to commit the crime.

"The girl told her father, who is also an evangelist in the church that the accused lured her into his room and forcefully had a carnal knowledge of her.

"The father reported the matter to the General Overseer of the church, but no action was taken which compelled the victim's father to report the matter at the police station," Anyanwu said.

The offence, Anyanwu noted, violated Section 137 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

Babalola, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The Chief Magistrate, Mrs A.O. Soladoye, directed that the case file should be forwarded to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for legal advice.

Section 137 prescribes life imprisonment for child rape.

The magistrate granted the accused bail in the sum of N200, 000 with two sureties in like sum and adjourned the case to June 29 for DPP's advice.(NAN)
