“I Almost Ended Up As A Prostitüte” – Mercy Johnson Confesses

Mercy Johnson Okojie turned 29 years
On 28th of August 2013 and here is
a message from the mother of one to her
fans…
Today, I thought of many things I would
love to have as birthday gifts and the many
dreams I am still pursuing. In all of this I'm
not losing sight of the fact that if not for
God I might have ended up on the street
like the many kids and young adults
begging for food and some prostitüting to
make ends meet. If we know the
circumstances that force some of these
people on the street, we would spare a
thought for them. I am where I am today
purely by the grace of God and the grace of
people who believed in me from the word
go.
Recently, I was at the Boys Reform Home,
Oregun, Lagos, the discussion I had with the
principal Mr. Kotun and much later with the
Special Adviser in charge of allremand homes
in Lagos set me thinking about the boys and
girls on the street. They have dreams too. Can
they fulfill those dreams on the street? The
answer will likely be no; because I won't be
where I am today if I ended up on the street.
For this reason, Mercy Johnson Foundation
will be doing a lot to get kids off the street. We
are not asking people for money or donation,
I will do all I can with the resources God has
given me, and with the support of my
husband to help get these kids off the street
and set them on the path where they can
begin to pursue their dreams. I want to plead
with people, fans, friends and colleagues to
spare a thought for the children on the street.
We can begin by educating people around us,
parents, the children and people in charge of
children (Oga-house help relationship,
teacher-student relationship, and others) on
the need to treat every child like the future of
Nigeria depends on it. And truth be told, our
future will not be all that enjoyable if we let
the scourge of 'street-children' fester. By then,
the rich will begin to cry. I learnt Lagos State
Government has 11 homes where most
children picked from the streets are kept,
reformed and reunited with their families after
counseling
.
That is an initiative Mercy Johnson Foundation
will be supporting and beyond that we will be
going to different states to help spread the
message-Get kids off the street, save the
future. From tomorrow, I will begin to replay
some of the lessons I learnt at the boys'
reform home and we all can contribute to
getting the kids off the street.
I am grateful to everyone that has sent in a
birthday message, tweet and gifts. Thank you
and God bless you.

NSCDC nabs woman for selling twins

The Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps,
Akwa Ibom State Command says it has arrested a
woman, Ms. Regina Udo, for selling her twins.
Udo, an indigene of Mkpok in Onna Local
Government Area, Akwa Ibom State, was said to
have sold the baby boys to one Favour Chukwu,
who worked for Precious Survivor Maternity
Home in Oboma, Oyingbo Local Government
Area, Rivers State.
It was learnt that the driver of the clinic, Mr.
Chikerom Ezelu and a lady who claimed to be a
housemaid, Miss Queen Ubanu, and 13 others
involved in child trafficking were also nabbed.
The state Commandant, Mr. Pedro Ideba, told
PUNCH Metro on Thursday that intelligence
officer of the NSCDC arrested Udo after she had
sold the first boy for N480, 000.
He said Chukwu could not buy the second child
because he had wanted to pay N400, 000.
He said, "We told Udo to agree for N400, 000 and
when Favour Chukwu arrived to buy the second
boy, we arrested her. She led our men to a clinic,
Precious Survivor Maternity Home.
"We found out that the owner of the clinic also
recruits young girls, whom they used as baby
factory. People go there to buy children.
"So far, we have arrested 16 persons and have
handed them over to the National Agency for
Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons and other
related matters for prosecution.
"All these arrests were made with the cooperation
of other security agencies."

Black Jesus Chopped To Death In Papa New Guinea

Black jesus
A cult leader known as "Black Jesus", who was
suspected of cannibalism, has been chopped
to death in a remote Papua New Guinea
village after a five-month manhunt, reports
said Friday.
According to AFP, Steven Tari, a convicted
defiler, had been on the run since escaping
from a prison in Madang in the Pacific nation's
east during a mass break-out with 48 others in
March.
Madang police chief Sylvester Kalaut said that
Tari and one of his followers were killed at a
village about 20 kilometres (12 miles) outside
Madang on Thursday as they were attacking a
young woman.
"He is now dead and this could be the fate of
the others who are also on the run from
authorities and I am warning and strongly
urging those escapees to surrender
themselves to authorities," Kalaut told the
PNG Post-Courier.
Tari, a failed Lutheran pastor who was widely
known as Black Jesus, was found guilty in 2010
of defiling girls who belonged to his Christian-
based sect and sentenced to up to 10 years.
At the time, he had thousands of village
followers, including a core of armed warriors
to protect him, in what is commonly referred
to in PNG as a "cargo cult".
As part of his "culture ministry", he preached
that young girls were to be "married" to him as
it was God's prophecy.
Kalaut said the woman Tari was in the process
of attacking was "a flower girl tricked into
joining the cult", adding that angry villagers
had surrounded him and his companion and
killed them.
His death follows that of a young high-school
girl about a week ago — a murder alleged to
have been carried out by Tari.
When he was captured in 2007, there were
widespread allegations that his cult also
practised cannibalism and sacrificial blood
rituals, but police only charged him with r*pe.
PNG is a sprawling nation where black magic,
sorcery and cannibalism sometimes occur.
Last year, police arrested dozens of people
linked to an alleged cannibal cult accused of
killing at least seven people, eating their
brains raw and making soup from their
penises.

his party and flirted with them right in front of her
Niyi, a Higher National Diploma (HND) II
student of Computer Science, suffered serious
burns and was taken to the hospital for
treatment.
The Police Public Relations Officer for Osun

French To Be Part Of UTME As From 2014

The Minister of Education, Prof. Ruqayyatu
Rufa'I, said on Thursday in Abuja that French
would be part of the Unified Tertiary
Matriculation Examination (UTME) as from
2014 for interested candidates.
Rufa'I said this at farewell reception held in
honour of the French Language Project
Manager, Mr Jean-Phillipe Roy.
She said that being multi-lingual in the 21st
Century was essential as it helps individuals to
operate more effectively in the international
community.
"For Nigeria, the study of French language is
quite key, considering the fact that our
neighbouring countries are French-speaking.
"Apart from the English Language, French
Language is one of the major international
languages," she said.
She said Roy came to Nigeria in 2009 under
the 2nd Bilateral Agreement between Nigeria
and French.
The minister noted that he had worked hard
to ensure that various components of the
project received due attention.
Rufa'I lauded his contributions to the reform
of the UTME for 2014 in addition to the
scholarships awarded to 16 teachers of French
Language to study in France for one month.
She said the project manager's contributions,
included supply of books to schools, award of
Masters Degree in French as a Foreign
Language and supply of DVD and CD player to
the project office, among others.
The minister lauded the support of the French
Government to the Nigerian French Language
Village, Badagry, Lagos, the Regional Network
of French Language centres in Africa.
She also commended the Association of
French Language Teachers, and noted s the
proposed handing over of the project vehicle
to the ministry for the monitoring of the
teaching and learning of the Lanaguage.
"Nigeria and France have come a long way in
their relationship. It is a relationship built on
mutual respect, cooperation and interest.
"I wish to assure you that the ministry will
continue to be committed to the teaching and
learning of French Language in Nigeria and
sustenance of the cordial relationship," she
said.
She called on the French Government to
introduce similar programmes to complement,
sustain and consolidate the achievements
made so far.
Responding, Roy lauded the collaboration
between the Federal Government and the
French Government.
"Since I have been here, you have shown a lot
of interest in what we have been trying to do
in terms of decision-making in critical issues
and, with your help, we have been able to
keep the project on the right track.
He said that French Government had so far
organised 160 training sessions in various
parts of the country, adding that 4,290 people
participated in the programme.
Roy called for continued collaboration
between the Nigerian Government and the
French Government.
In his remarks, the Counsellor of French
Cultural Affairs, Mr Patrick Perez, stressed the
need to sustain good relationship between the
two countries.
"We will like to thank you for all your efforts to
promote French Language in Nigeria and we
hope that this collaboration will continue to
grow from strength to strength," he said.

Chinese Kidnappers Give Hostage Money, Release Her After Finding Out She’s Poor

Two Chinese kidnappers, identified only by
their last names –- Lu and Xie — grabbed an
11-year-old girl in hopes of getting a hefty
ransom in return for her release, Shanghai
Daily reported. However, once the pair
learned that the girl's family was poor, and
there was no way that they would be able to
come up with the more than $160,000 they
were demanding, Lu and Xie decided to set the
girl free and give her about $80, too.
The girl was unharmed and the two were
caught and punished. Lu will serve four years
for his crime Xie will serve five.
While it sure is unusual for criminals to
change courses while they're in the midst of
carrying out a scheme, it does happen every
once in a while.
Last month, burglars broke into a San
Bernardino, Calif., nonprofit that helps victims
of s*xual violence and made off with six
computers with hard drives, a laptop and a
bag of valuables, NBC Los Angeles reported.
But, once the thieves realized that they had
stolen from the San Bernardino County s*xual
Assault Services, they returned the items and
left a pretty heartwarming note, too.
"We had no idea what we were takeing [sic].
Here your stuff back. We hope that you guys
can continue to make a difference in peoples
[sic] live. God bless," the note read.
Everyone involved, police and the
organization's employees, were stunned and
elated.
"We were all pretty shocked," Candy Stallings,
the nonprofit's executive director, told the
news outlet. "You've got to be kidding me. I
was in disbelief, I got chills, I got very
emotional."

Steve Hall: This is How Facebook is Going to Die

Yesterday, Facebook's market value topped $100
billion. Zuck must be smitten his baby is now
worth close to last year's original IPO valuation.
Market confidence, which Monday included a
stock price increase of 1.9% to $41.34 with a daily
high of $41.94 (the highest since the IPO), is said
to be bolstered by belief Facebook just might
deliver on its mobile advertising promise. The
upswing is certainly positive news for the social
network which hit a stock price low of $17.73 in
September.
But can Zuckerberg, whose baby now realizes 41%
of its quarterly advertising revenue from
smartphone and tablet-centric promotions, really
make a go of it when recent Pew research find
teens have a "waning enthusiasm for Facebook"?
The report states dislike for the incessant over-
sharing that is part and parcel of the service. But,
more importantly, teens are miffed all their
parents and their parents friends are now on
Facebook.
What could be more horrific to a teen than mom
and dad commenting on a recent post with well-
intentioned love, affection and pride that in teen-
speak can only translate to extreme "did you see
what Sally's mom posted?" embarrassment? No
matter how well-intentioned, parents embarrass
their kids. It's just a fact of life. And while many
parents insist upon friending their children,
there's not one out there under the age of, say,
20, who actually wants that online friendship.
So while mobile ad revenue may be boosting
Facebook's health, it's no secret kids wants their
own, parent-free playground. For example,
Twitter has seen a 16% increase in teen usage
from 2011 to 2012. Not that Twitter is parent-free
but it's easier to avoid them.
Summarizing its recent BI Intelligence report on
teen's mobile-first usage, the publication wrote, "
we may be witnessing is the unraveling of a
unitary, centralized social media landscape,
dominated by Facebook, into a set of multipolar
nodes. Facebook warded off the Instagram threat
by buying the company, but it won't always be
possible for the company to neutralize threats
with acquisitions."
It's no secret services like Snapchat and the
recently Yahoo!-acquired Tumblr have been
heavily fueled by teen usage. In fact, a recent
Survata survey found more 13-18-year-old teens
(61%) use Tumblr than Facebook (55%).
Perhaps, lending the best insight into this
apparent shift by teens away from Facebook, 13-
year-old Ruby Karp wrote in a Mashable article,
I'm 13 and None of My Friends Use Facebook,
"Part of the reason Facebook is losing my
generation's attention is the fact that there are
other networks now. When I was 10, I wasn't old
enough to have a Facebook. But a magical thing
called Instagram had just come out … and our
parents had no idea there was an age limit.
Rapidly, all my friends got Instagrams. Teens are
followers. That's just what we are. If all my friends
are getting this cool new thing called Snapchat, I
want it, too! We want what's trending, and if
Facebook isn't 'trending,' teens won't care."
Commenting further on the embarrassment factor
of teens and their parents using the same social
network, Karp writes, "Let's say I get invited to a
party, and there's underage drinking. I'm not
drinking, but someone pulls out a camera. Even if
I'm not carrying a red Solo cup, I could be
photographed behind a girl doing shots. Later
that week, the dumb-dumb decides to post
photos from that 'amazing' party. If my mom saw I
was at a party with drinking, even if I wasn't
participating, I'd be dead. This isn't Facebook's
fault, but it happens there."
She's right. While every parent certainly wants to
know what their teens are doing when they are
out and about, Facebook fosters an almost creepy
form of supervision. It's like having your parents
supervise your Junior High prom. While parents
want to be able to supervise their children at all
times, children will attempt to avoid it like the
plague.
We're certainly not here to debate the merits of
proper parentage but it's clear children will do
whatever it takes — and this has become
increasingly easier in an age of endless digital
choice — to avoid their parents whenever that
can.
What does this mean for Zuck who, let's be
honest, was just a kid, himself, a few years ago? It
means his baby is going to become a rest home
for the over 40 crowd.
Of course, it should be said there's nothing wrong
with the over 40 crowd, especially when it comes
to their disposable income one assumes every
smart marketer desires. But, alas, most marketers
are just dumb. They love a shiny new object and
in lemming-like fashion they're going to chase
that flash because, let's be honest again, that 30-
year-old marketing director who recently edged
out that supremely more qualified but far too
grey and uncool 50-year-old, would much rather
create a hip, cool, edgy marketing program
fronted by a hip, cool, edgy and very youthful
celebrity that appeals to teens than some washed-
up celebrity has-been that, if the marketer did
their homework, would realize actually does have
a rock-solid connection with the over 40 crowd
who, as we all know, has money to spend.
While it's teens who are shifting away from
Facebook, it's the marketers who will pull the
money that fuels the network.
And that's why Facebook will fail. It won't happen
overnight. It may not happen in the next decade.
But it will happen. Which, of course, is sad and
frustrating. Because we'll all have to start the
stupid cycle over again. Teens find cool, new toy.
Parents discover it a few years later. Teens leave.
Cool, new toy goes out to pasture.

Students give FG, ASUU 7-day ultimatum to end strike

Nigerian students have had enough of staying at
home due to the ASUU strike and they have made
this clear by speaking out.
As a result of the almost two month old strike, the
National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS),
yesterday issued a one-week ultimatum to the
Federal Government and the union's leadership to
resolve their differences or face serious
consequences.
According to reports, the students said if the
impasse was not resolved within the next seven
days, it will mobilize students on a nation-wide
riot in what it described as 'operation occupy
Nigeria'.
The students' body appealed to ASUU to return to
the classroom and continue negotiation with the
Federal Government since the latter claimed to
have released over N100 billion for infrastructural
development and another N30 billion for
allowances.
This was the highpoint of a protest by the
students who blocked the Asaba end of the River
Niger Bridge to press home their demands. The
protest caused traffic snarl for several hours as
the students stalled movements to the eastern
part of the country even as those returning were
barred.
NANS coordinator in the South-South and South-
East, Comrade Chinonso Obasi, stated that
students were at the receiving end of the strike
and vowed that they would take their destinies in
their own hands if the parties failed to reconcile
within a week.
"We are appealing to ASUU that since the Federal
Government has been able to release N100 billion
for infrastructural development and N30 billion
for allowance, they should go back to classroom
and continue their negotiation or agitation. This is
our prayer and wish.
"We are giving them one week to open the schools
or be ready to face corrosive consequences in
form of nation-wide demonstration and riots. We
are ready to mobilise for that and it will be
operation occupy Nigeria," he said.
Lamenting the effect of the strike, Obasi said
students have become prone to accidents on the
highways and the female students have been
reduced to sex hawkers on the streets.
His words: "I stand to tell you that a lot of
accidents have been recorded and 99.9% of the
victims are Nigerian students. If they were in
classrooms, they would not have fallen victims of
road crashes.
"Our female students have become commercial
sex hawkers on the streets in order to make ends
meet. This colossal effect is more than what ASUU
is agitating for. Hence, we can no longer fold our
arms and watch things go wrong."

EU Wants Corruption Gone From Nigeria The European Union is worried about the increasing level of corruption in the Nigerian society and has called for stricter measures to halt the epidemic rise.

This was revealed by outgoing Head of
European Union Delegation in Nigeria Dr.
David Macrea. He spoke to reporters in a
valedictory session. MacRae said: "Nigeria has
to deal seriously with what is known as the
immunity clause
It seems just few offenders are being
punished while the real people who commit
the offences get away. "It is regrettable that
corruption in Nigeria is not going down and it
is affecting the entire country. I am not saying
that Nigeria is the worst country; you still find
so many good things in Nigeria
"I am also happy that the government is taking
very serious steps to deal with the issue of
corruption". The outgoing envoy said he
expected better funding for states and local
governments "Simply because I want to see
that money should be better spent.
To make it to be better, it requires other
things to be in place and I think we need to
make a special effort to ensure that the
judiciary is functioning correctly so that court
cases can be done speedily and effectively."
He said too much time is spent on appeals in
the courts adding. MacRea said it would be
wrong for anyone to think that all will be
perfect with democracy within the short
period of 14 years when civil rule returned.
"If we expect to find in Nigeria, everything in a
good state as far as governance is concerned,
we are not obviously facing the reality." He
spoke about the diversity and beauty of
Nigeria as some of the memories he would be
taking away with him. "I am saying that
because there are diversities of people; they
say 250 different ethnic groups, languages are
quite different, customs are different.
You get off the plane in Anambra and you see
one situation, it is nothing like when you go to
Kano or Jigawa and when you go to Lagos you
will see this incredible city. And if you look at
the construction taking place around Abuja, it
is such an incredible range in Nigeria and it is
tremendous in rich culture and it is such
dynamism in the business community and
these are things that I treasure and will take
away with me from Nigeria.
I think it is a tremendous country and I know
what it takes to be a Nigerian and I can
understand why Nigerians are proud to be
Nigerians because of all these things. "The
good thing about Nigeria is that despite all
these things I have talked about earlier about
how people can be very mean-minded, there
is also pride in being a Nigerian and that is a
good thing and that is what we should build
on.
"When I go round the country, some of the
states are progressing very well and are very
mindful of their responsibility for safe delivery
at state level." MacRae criticised the early kick
off of the 2015 campaign which he decribed as
"regrettable." "I think it is regrettable that
already in 2012, we are talking about the next
election which is to be done in 2015.
I think may be in the last six or eight months
we can start talking about who we want to run
but to do it at this time is a little bit of
distraction because now is the time when the
effort should go into making things happen
like delivery services, putting in place
infrastructure. We are good people and are
making good efforts. He also decried the lack
of internal democracy in the political parties in
the country.
MacRae also expressed concern over delay in
the execution of EU projects in the country.
He said "many projects take too long to
execute, because this does not go down well
with some of these villagers whom these
projects are being targeted for end up waiting
for too long.

Ibadan Man Arrested For Stealing Noodles

A middle-aged man, Moses Eze, is set to
appear in court for breaking into a shop
belonging to Mrs Grace Bamigbola around
Jerusalem area, Ojoo, Ibadan, carting away
items which included two cartons of
noodles.
Crime & Security learnt that the police officers
were alerted when neighbours sensed a
strange happening in one of the shops in the
area. But before the police could reach the
area, the looters had completed their mission.
Luck, however, ran out on them when
policemen suspected a man waiting to board a
vehicle at Isokin junction with some items.
The suspect happened to be Eze and was
brought to the police station with the items.
In the morning, Mrs Bamigbola came to the
station to lodge a complaint that her shop
where she was selling food items and
provision was burgled overnight with some
items carted away. The Police showed her all
the items recovered from the suspect but to
their surprise the items were identified by Mrs
Bamigbola as her property.
Eze is now set to be arraigned in court for
prosecution.

All 25,000 Candidates Fail Liberia University Entrance Examination

Liberia's education minister says she finds it
hard to believe that not a single candidate
passed this year's university admission exam.
Nearly 25,000 school-leavers failed the test for
admission to the University of Liberia, one of
two state-run universities.
The results mean there will be no freshers at
west Africa's oldest degree-granting
institution, one of two state-run universities in
Liberia, when it reopens its doors next month
for another academic year.
The students lacked enthusiasm and did not
have a basic grasp of English, a university
official told the BBC.
Liberia is recovering from a brutal civil war
that ended a decade ago.
President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, a Nobel peace
laureate, recently acknowledged that the
education system is still in a "in a mess", and
much needed to be done improve it.
However, Education Minister Etmonia David-
Tarpeh told the BBC Focus on Africa
programme that she intended to meet
university officials to discuss the issue.
"I know there are a lot of weaknesses in the
schools but for a whole group of people to
take exams and every single one of them to
fail, I have my doubts about that," Ms David-
Tarpeh said.
"It's like mass murder."
Ms David-Tarpeh said she knew some of the
students and the schools they attended.
"These are not just schools that will give
people grades. I'd really like to see the results
of the students," she added.
University spokesman Momodu Getaweh told
BBC Focus on Africa that the university stood
by its decision, and it would not be swayed by
"emotion".
"In English, the mechanics of the language,
they didn't know anything about it. So the
government has to do something," he said.
"The war has ended 10 years ago now. We
have to put that behind us and become
realistic."
The Voice of America (VOA) reported that the
university hired a private consultant to
manage and administer this year's entrance
exam.
The consultant, James Dorbor Jallah, told the
VOA: "There is a perception in our society
largely that once you take the University of
Liberia admission exam, if you do not pay
money to someone, or if you do not have
appropriate connections, you would not be
placed on the results list. So, the university
has been grappling with how they could
manage the process whereby people's abilities
would be truly measured on the basis of their
performance in the examination."
Liberia could draw a lesson from the mass
failure, he added. "For the country as a whole,
I think this is a clarion call that we need to all
see that the king is moving around unclad and

“I Am Disappointed In You” – WizKid Fires Back At J-Martins

Some weeks back Wizkid insulted a fan
who tried correcting his English and it was
all over social media, with fans lashing out
at him.
Yesterday, it was reported that J-Martins
blasted Wizkid for his attitude.
However, WizKid took to twitter not too long
ago to defend himself and also fire back at J-

Pastor Bans weavon in his church

The senior pastor at Resurrecting Faith Church
in Waco, Texas has advised his female
congregation not to wear weaves to church. 39
year old Pastor A.J. Aamir said he grew wary of
looking out over his congregation and seeing
a sea of hair weaves. Pastor Aamir feels
women wearing weaves presents a false image
of themselves and are associated with women
who have low self-esteem.
"Our black women are getting weaves trying
to be something and someone they are not.
Be real with yourself is all I'm saying," Pastor
A.J. Aamir told Americapreachers.com
He said he "highly disapproves" of women
wearing weave in his church, where the
average age of the congregation is 22.
Meaning most female members wear weaves.
"Long hair don't care. What kind of mess is
that? I don't want my members so focused
on what's on their heads and not in their
heads. I lead a church where our members
are struggling financially. I mean really
struggling. "Yet, a 26-year-old mother in my
church has a $300 weave on her head. No. I
will not be quiet about this."

TRAGIC NEWS: Catholic priest mistakenly kills himself just before Mass in Edo

A small community in Edo State was thrown into
confusion early yesterday morning after the
sudden death of one of its Catholic priests.
Rev. Father Peter Ayala of the St. Thomas Moore
Catholic Church, Sobe, in Owan West Local
council area of Edo State was found dead in his
apartment within the church premises on Sunday
morning.
According to reports, the deceased who was
expected to conduct the morning mass at 7am
was said to be cleaning his double-barreled gun
inside his apartment within the church premises,
when the gun reportedly went off and killed him.
The incident took place in the early hours of
Sunday before the priest dressed up for the mass,
while worshippers were gathering for the worship
service.
The development threw the church into disarray
as both mass servers and church elders made
frantic efforts to rescue the priest who was lying
prostrate in his apartment.

Why ASUU must NOT call off its strike

Great Nigerian students, when the strike first
began we thought that this ASUU members have
started again, for once we were all tired of the
incessant strike over wages and allowances the
question that kept coming to our mind is what do
they want again? after-all,school fees has been
kept reasonably constant in federal university for
some years now.
Our mind was definitely filled with different
sentiments but after taking a closer look at the
agreement the federal government signed with
ASUU in 2009, the nitty gritty of it,which we
believe that an agreement is supposed to be an
honourable contract between two parties
Contrary to this, the President Jonathan's
government has been unfair to the letters and
spirit of the 2009 FGN/ASUU agreement.
For instance, while the agreement stipulates
annual increases in budgetary allocation to
education between 2009 and 2020 until it reaches
26%, the Federal government budgeted just a
paltry 8.5% to education this year.
All ASUU is demanding now is that the agreement
must be fully implemented. To all students, we
cannot be indifferent to the content of this
agreement just because of our fears about the
academic calendar! and our not too friendly
lecturers.
If this agreement is fully implemented, together
with democratic management of schools to
include elected representatives of education
workers and students, it would mean better
funding of education and a great relief to
overburdened students. It is therefore, in our
best interest as students to ensure this agreement
is fully implemented by supporting the
implementation and fighting to save public
education from collapse.
Of course, if we look at the condition of facilities
for teaching and research in most state
universities and federal universities, you can not
but sincerely agree that there is an urgent need
for us to act now to save Nigeria's education
sector from a total collapse! it is reported that the
Nigerian government has amassed huge fortune
since the democratic experiment began in 1999. It
will interest us to know that between 2000 and
2011, Nigeria government earned N48.48 trillion
from the sale of oil alone against N3.10 trillion
earned between 1979 and 1999 (Guardian,
24/3/13).
With this tremendous upswing in the revenue at
the disposal of the Nigeria government, one
would have expected it to translate to a
commensurate improvement in the quantity and
quality of Nigeria's public education not only that,
the government is quick to tell us the country is
broke but it didnt take sanusi lamido sanusi time
to inject 600billion naira into failed banks of
politicians and their cronies. 200million dollars
was used to bail out nollywood..
Unfortunately, given the present state of public
education it is very clear that it's more than ever
enmeshed in a monumental crisis largely
characterized by poor funding. As a matter of fact
the budgetary allocation to education has fallen
from 12.22% in 1985 to 8.5% in 2013. Comparing
this year allocation of 8.5% with UNESCO
recommendation of 26% budgetary allocation to
education it is very clear that Nigeria government
is not really interested in funding education.
Here in Nigeria, more than half of the nation's
budget goes to salaries and allowance of political
office holders. This is an embarassing paradox in
a situation where many countries with smaller
GDP have their percentage budgetary allocations
to education as follows: Ghana (31%) ; Cote
d'ivoire (20%); Kenya (23%); Morocco (17.7%);
Botswana (19.0%); Swaziland (24.6%); Lesotho
(17.0%); Burkina Faso (16.8%); Uganda (27.0%)
and Tunisia (17.0%).
in the Nigerian universities, laboratories are
overcrowded, stove are still been use in the 21st
century, water do not run in the lab and often
times lectures are suspended due to lack of
electricity.
It has also been reported that in 2013, 1.7 million
candidates sat for the Unified Tertiary
Matriculation Examination (UTME) and from the
available space in all the universities, polytechnics
and colleges of education in the country only less
than 29 percent of the total candidates will be
admitted, thus leaving out over 1.2 million
candidates.
No Nigerian university is ranked among the best
5,000 in the world or among first twenty in Africa.
foreign professional use to be at the university of
Ibadan, today, they have deserted and our own
lecturers are also running for greener pastures .
There are just about 34,504 lecturers left in the
Universities out of about 50000 needed for
optimum efficiency.
A visit to the Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago
Iwoye sums up the Nigerian scenario the
university has been turned to a mere glorified
secondary school. The facilities are dilapidated
and lecture rooms looks like a pig cage the same
scenario is what we have in University of Uyo,
University of Calabar and other universities are
also in crisis with decaying infrastructures. At the
Osun State University, about three sets of medical
students are in limbo between pre-clinical and
clinical stages because of the lack of a teaching
hospital.
I strongly believe that the fight to save the
education sector from collapse and underfunding
is a fight we must champion and pursue as
students who are the major stakeholders in the
universities, polytechnics and monothenics
We must also know that this fight cut across
board and all political parties in Nigeria are
united in their anti poor policies. You will recall
that the ACN that calls itself the progressive Only
last year callously increased the fees of the Lagos
State University (LASU) from N25, 000 to between
N280, 000 and N345, 750. A development that has
led to sharp drop in the number of students
picking up admission because they cannot afford
it. Of the 5,000 quota given to LASU by the NUC
only about 1,200 students had applied as at
today.
This has contributed to the planned
rationalization of program and departments in
LASU. This means that departments will be
scrapped or merged.
Greatest Nigerian students, it is in light of this,
that I call on students to boldly and continue to
make this sacrifices by backing the genuine
demands of ASUU so that our generation can get
it right once and for all.

‘You don’t call people who made you poor” – J martins blasts wizkid

Here's what J Martins said in a recent interview on
Hot Fm 98.3 Abuja about Wizkid's unfriendly reply

'I'm not taking any side, don't mean no beef,
no disrespect, and no hate but let the truth be

A former senator's son is being remanded in prison over his involvement in an armed robbery in Abuja.

Informed police sources revealed to the Nigerian
Tribune that the former senator's son from Ekiti
State had led a gang of armed robbers to rob a
6:19:02 PM colonel, names withheld, at Mbora
Estate, where his AK-47 rifle and other valuable
items were removed.
The source disclosed that the robbery operation,
which took place on July 5, resulted in the arrest
of the ex-senator's son, names withheld.
The sources said that in the process of
investigation, operatives from the Special Anti -
Robbery Squad working on information,
subsequently arrested the suspect and while a
search was conducted in his house around Life
Camp area, Abuja, 16 live cartridges and some
other incriminating exhibits were recovered from
the suspects house.
During interrogation, the suspect was alleged to
belong to a notorious armed robbery gang that
had been terrorising the FCT and its environs.
The suspect reportedly told his investigators that
his friend, an Igbo boy, brought the gun and the
cartridges to his house and that the boy had gone
back to the East with the intention of bringing
more arms and ammunitions.
He, however, denied participating in the robbery
attack on the colonel's house at Mbora Estate.
He confirmed that the said Igbo boy brought two
laptop computers robbed at gun point to him,
which he sold in the GSM Village, Abuja.

ASUU Adamant, Disregards FG’s ‘No Work, No Pay’ Threat

The threat by the Government to implement
its 'no-work, no-pay' policy has been described
as an 'obsolete familiar threat' that will not
stop the ongoing strike by the Academic Staff
Union of Universities (ASUU).
ASUU in a press statement yesterday, titled,
"ASUU: On Government's Threat of No-Work,
No-Pay", signed by its chairman, University of
Ibadan (UI) chapter, Dr Olusegun Ajiboye, said
members of the union have resolved to
pursue the strike to a logical conclusion.
The statement said ASUU members are using
the action to defend the integrity of the
university system in Nigeria and save it from
universal mockery.
Dr Ajiboye said the minimum funding
requirement for public universities this year is
N500 billion and not N100 billion, as being
bandied around by the Federal Government.
He warned that the union would resist
anything short of N500 billion.
According to Dr. Ajiboye, the Federal
Government's offer of N100 billion appears to
show that government "is just begging the
matter", because it is like a drop in the ocean.
Vowing to continue the strike in the face of
blackmail and coercion using no-work, no-pay,
Dr. Ajiboye added, "The academics remain
resolute on this struggle".
He added: "Going by the ASUU agreement of
2009 and the Memorandum of Agreement
(MoU) signed by the Federal Government in
January 2013, the minimum funding
requirement for the universities as at 2013 is
N500 billion and not N100 billion. Only the
provision of this will meet the immediate
needs of addressing the rot and decay in the
public universities. Anything short of this is
not acceptable to the union.
"Therefore, rather than engage in cheap
blackmail and unworkable threat, the
government should address the issues on the
table."

Militants lay siege in Akwa'ibom community

Dozens of militants, who were dislodged from
Delta, Bayelsa and Rivers states by Joint Task
Force, are now terrorising local fishermen and
traders in Mbo creeks in Mbo Local Government
Area of Akwa Ibom State.
The fishermen and traders, who spoke with our
correspondent in Ibaka, Mbughu Unyenge and
Okposo, on Saturday, said they lost fishing
equipment and money to the militants.
A fisherman, Mr. Okon Ansa, said the militants
usually attacked them using different strategies.
He explained that one of the strategies of the
former militants was to shoot from every
direction, thereby confusing their victims.
He added that sometimes, the bandits would
capture their victims by laying ambush for them.
Ansa, who claimed he lost 75 horsepower
outboard engine, which cost N1.4m, to the
robbers, told our correspondent that the engine
was three weeks old when the robbers snatched it
from him.
He said, "I feel like crying. All the money I have
been saving for the past three years was gone.
"I am indebted to those that I took a loan from to
buy the engine. Where will I raise N1.4m to pay
my debt?
"The scenario was just like a dream to me. The
assailants chased us for close to 40 minutes,
shooting from every direction. We were only lucky
that no life was lost."
Another fisherman, Mr. David Bassey, said many
fishermen and market women had been deprived
of their means of livelihood by the militants.
He stated that the militants killed a fisherman
from Inua Abasi on Tuesday and stole the boat's
outboard engine.
He noted that the presence of the Nigerian Navy
in Mbo did not deter the bandit, saying naval
officers did not have boats to patrol the water.
Bassey said, "These people are killing us and our
businesses. We are afraid of going into the water.
The government is not looking at our direction,
we are at the mercy of the militants.
"The militants, apart from taking fish, garri and
money, also subject us to serious beating."
The Police Public Relations Officer, Akwa Ibom
State Command, Mr. Etim Dickson, said the police
were aware of the development.
He said when the AIG, Mr. Jonathan Johnson,
visited the paramount ruler of Oron, Odiong
Akan, the monarch told Johnson that the militants
were terrorising the waterways.
He said, "When the AIG visited the paramount
ruler of Oron, he made a special request that the
police be deployed in Oron waterways to check
the incursion of pirates."
He stated that there was a limit the police could
go to ensure the protection of lives and property
in the waterways.
Navy Public Relations Officer, Ikot Abasi, Akwa
Ibom State, Sub-Lieutenant Iginla, said he would
call back.

Tyson dying from Drugs and Alcohol

Former Heavyweight Boxing champion Mike Tyson
has claimed he is on the verge of dying from
ongoing drug and alcohol problems.
"I wanna live my sober life. I don't wanna die. I'm
on the verge of dying, because I'm a vicious
alcoholic," Tyson said on ESPN's Friday Night
Fights.
Tyson, now a promoter, told a news conference,
"I'm a bad guy sometimes. I did a lot of bad
things, and I want to be forgiven.
"So in order for me to be forgiven, I hope they
can forgive me. I wanna change my life, I wanna
live a different life now," the former champion
said.
Tyson admitted to being a continual substance
abuser but was hopeful he was finally becoming
clean.
"I haven't drunk or taken drugs in six days and for
me that's a miracle," he said.
"I've been lying to everybody else that I think I
was sober, but I'm not. This is my sixth day. I'm
never gonna use again," he said.

2015: who says Nigeria will not Break

A few years back, the Americans were reported to
have predicted that Nigeria may not survive a
likely turmoil in 2015. The date obviously gives a
political undertone to the problem considering
that it coincides with when our next general
elections are due. The significance of the
prediction does not lie in the maker as those who
perceive America as omniscience would want the
nation to believe.
After all, France and indeed some of our own
prophets/soothsayers were reported to have also
seen 'visions' which corroborated the alarm. The
truth is that anyone who has followed the history
of Nigerian elections can easily have such
expectations. In the last one week however, some
rather soothing remarks on the subject have been
credited to our President, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan
and 2 former Heads of State-General Yakubu
Gowon and former President Ibrahim Babangida
(IBB).
To the positive views of these statesmen, I would
love to say a loud Amen and proceed to wish our
nation well. But because wishes are hardly
coterminous with reality, it appears ill-advisable
to rely on wishes. Again, those who think prayers
would do the magic have to bear in mind the
common saying that 'heaven helps those who
help themselves.
In other words, prayers alone may not be
sufficient especially if some of our compatriots as
usual, choose to be reckless about how they
handle our numerous centrifugal forces. For
instance, we are all aware that the fabric of
solidarity which binds our heterogeneous society
together is not only fragile but tends to stretch to
breaking point at the slightest provocation. Yet,
our people, especially the political class, always
put our country through constant threat of
dismemberment.
Although President Jonathan has said several
times that it is premature and distractive to get
involved in electioneering until next year, the
nation is already broken into 2 irreconcilable
groupings concerning his role in 2015 elections.
And whereas the first group which is a large
portion of the south appears ready to die if the
President is not re-elected, the second group-
another large portion of the North seems ready to
bring the world to an end if power does not shift
to the North in 2015.
Unfortunately, the show down is virtually
inevitable because of the lucrative nature of
politics and the winner-takes-all political system
that we run. For how long will our nation survive,
when with little or no work, a tiny elite group
appropriates so much to itself while an
exceedingly large segment of the population is
left prostrate?
The other day, one political analyst made a rather
uncharitable classification of the nation. He said
everyone knows what it takes to become a judge,
a medical doctor, a professor and indeed any
professional practitioner. The politician on the
other hand, gets to fame, according to the
analysis, through several question channels such
as illiteracy, fake certificates, thuggery and all
forms of duplicity.
The question as to which of the two groups is
better recognised and remunerated in Nigeria for
its contribution to national development does not
arise because the politicians themselves do not
quite know how much they earn. They just
expropriate. Why will politics not be a do or die
game and who says Nigeria cannot break on
account of politics?
The powerful Nigerian political class can in
earnest do and undo. If the group or even just
one of them organizes a function in our
collectively owned Abuja these days, the only
roads that would not be shut on the day by our
eye-service law enforcement agents would be the
few leading straight to the venue of the event. No
one works or goes anywhere that day. How can
the Nigerian bureaucracy be efficient or effective
when the system of recruitment has been gravely
corrupted?
Interestingly, we hear only about the scandalous
sale of job placements. The other condemnable
dimension of the numerous deficient recruits that
are imposed on institutions by the powerful are
taken as the entitlement of the latter. Indeed, the
same powerful occasionally sets up panels to
probe only the jobs that are sold. No one can
question the political class as public policies
weaken only the powerless
For instance, in order to make the apprehension
of criminals easy, persons who own factory fitted
'tokunbo' tinted glasses are made to register their
cars officially with the police supposedly at no
cost. The people and the authorities are however
aware that the powerless pay no less than N25,
000 per vehicle at the designated centres for the
assignment.
As part of transforming Nigeria, the Immigration
Service now officially renews an international
passport at the same cost of acquiring a new one.
It is probably for the same reason that the Federal
Road Safety Commission has decreed that fresh
and increased expenditures have to be borne for
the procurement of newly designed vehicle plate
numbers.
In major cities, landlords are passing to their
tenants, increases occasioned by ground rent,
tenement rate, facility fee and water rate to
mention a few. In Abuja, parking fees by different
collecting agencies are being imposed on the
people although there are no parks. Based on
these issues, which could obviously weaken the
weak beyond weakness, it can be argued that
Nigeria may not break physically but in the sub
consciousness of the weak, the break happened
mentally years ago. To the privileged class
however, these are non-issues because they
happen elsewhere and are reportedly temporary
sacrifices for development.
Last month, I was at a workshop where some of
the speakers blamed the nation's woes on the
media. According to them, journalists as patriots
ought to be engaged in advocacy journalism by
projecting their country only in good light. During
the question and answer session, the key note
speaker declined to respond to my question as to
what he considered the best way for a journalist
to report a public event like the process arranged
by our 36 governors to elect a chairman for the
Nigerian Governors Forum. He just said that was
politics. I understood him to mean that whether
Nigeria would survive over time depends on
politics.

The word of Paul isn't the word of God

By Femi Aribisala
If God were to inspire me to write a book, the
words in my book would still be my words. They
would not be the word of God.
Ask a Christian a question about Jesus, and he
might answer with a quotation from Paul. But
who tells us Paul speaks for Jesus? Why do we
need Paul to speak for Jesus when Jesus speaks
for himself? Why do we need Paul to speak for
Jesus when Jesus himself warns us: "Be on your
guard; I have told you everything ahead of
time?" (Mark 13:23). If Jesus has told us all we
need to know, why do we need someone else to
add to, or subtract from, what he said?
Limitations of scripture
The word of God is, and will forever be, with God.
(John 1:1). God created all things with his word.
He spoke his word to the patriarchs and the
prophets of Israel. Then he sent his word to the
world in the person of Jesus, his Son. The word
of God now sits at the right hand of God from
where he speaks into the hearts and minds of
sons of God and judges all things. There is no
scriptural basis whatsoever for concluding that
this word of God is the same as the word of Paul.
Daniel says: "I, Daniel, understood from the
scriptures, according to the word of the LORD
given to Jeremiah the prophet, that the desolation
of Jerusalem would last seventy years." (Daniel
9:2). This shows that the scriptures are separate
and distinct from the word of God. The scriptures
are given by men. The word of God is given by
God. The scriptures are written by men. The
word of God is spoken by God.
Accordingly, Jesus points out that the word of
God gives life: scriptures do not. He says to the
Jews: "You search the scriptures, for in them you
think you have eternal life; and these are they
which testify of me. But you are not willing to
come to me that you may have life." (John
5:39-40).
Paul says: "All scripture is given by inspiration of
God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof,
for correction, for instruction in
righteousness." (2 Timothy 3:16). But this does
not make the scriptures the word of God. There is
a difference between what God says and what
God inspires. If God were to inspire me to write a
book, the words in my book would still be my
words. They would not be the word of God. All
that can be said is that my words were written by
the inspiration of God. If God were to inspire me
to do a painting, it would not thereby be the
painting of God? It would still be my painting.
Second Peter
Contrary to popular perception, the writer of 2
Peter does Paul no favours. He says: "No
prophecy of scripture is of any private
interpretation, for prophecy never came by the
will of man, but holy men of God spoke as they
were moved by the Holy Spirit." (2 Peter 1:20-21).
However, Paul is not a prophet. 2 Peter does not
classify Paul's writing as prophecy but as
"scripture." Christians need to understand that
the law and the prophets are the highest form of
inspired Jewish writings. Other "writings" are
considered of lower cadre.
2 Peter does not even acknowledge Paul as an
apostle of Christ. Instead, it pointedly refers to
him as "Brother Paul." It does not say Paul writes
by the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. Instead, it
says Paul writes: "according to the wisdom that
God gave him." (2 Peter 3:15). That is certainly not
a high commendation. It actually means 2 Peter
does not accept Paul's writings as the word of
God. At best, they are words of wisdom. I also
write according to the wisdom God gave me. But
that does not make my writings the word of God.
Moreover, the major concern of 2 Peter is that
Paul's letters are inclined to lead unstable
believers astray. I share that concern. However,
there is no danger in the word of God leading
anybody astray. Nowhere in the scriptures are we
counseled to be careful that the word of God
might lead us astray. 2 Peter says some of Paul's
writings are "hard to understand." Again, this
immediately shows they cannot be the word of
God. The word of God is not hard to understand.
On the contrary, it "gives understanding to the
simple." (Psalm 119:130).
Word of Paul
When Paul wrote his letter to Timothy declaring
the scriptures to be the inspiration of God, the
New Testament bible was non-existent.
Therefore, Paul's epistles can surely not be
included in his classification of the scriptures. In
any case, Paul's view of the Old Testament
contradicts that of Jeremiah. Jeremiah insists the
scribes tampered with the bible. He asks: "How
can you say, 'We are wise, for we have the law of
the LORD,' when actually the lying pen of the
scribes has handled it falsely?" (Jeremiah 8:8).
Paul is the only writer in the bible who says his
word is the word of God. He says to the
Thessalonians: "When you received the word of
God which you heard from us, you welcomed it
not as the word of men, but as it is in truth, the
word of God." (1 Thessalonians 2:13). This is one
of the most deceitful things Paul ever said. In the
bible, Paul mostly speaks for himself and about
himself. Time and again, he presents himself as
his own authority, ensuring that his words should
not be mistaken for the word of God.
The word of God can only come from God. It
cannot come from man. Paul is a man; therefore,
he cannot speak the word of God. John the
Baptist, whose heavenly calling Jesus
authenticates, never claims he speaks the word of
God. Instead he says: "He who comes from above
is above all; he who is of the earth is earthly and
speaks of the earth. He who comes from heaven
is above all." (John 3:31). "He whom God has sent
speaks the words of God, for God does not give
the Spirit by measure." (John 3:34).
John is talking here about Jesus and no one else.
Only Jesus and the Holy Spirit are divinely
authorised to speak the word of God on earth.
They are the only two people who come from
heaven. They also never speak their own words.
They only speak God's words.
Jesus says: "I have not spoken on my own
authority; but the Father who sent me gave me a
command, what I should say and what I should
speak. And I know that his command is
everlasting life. Therefore, whatever I speak, just
as the Father has told me, so I speak." (John
12:49-50). The same principle applies to the Holy
Spirit. Jesus says: "He will guide you into all truth;
for he will not speak on his own authority, but
whatever he hears he will speak." (John 16:13).
These principles have no applicability to Paul.
Even by his own admission, Paul speaks his own
words. He says: "What I speak, I speak not
according to the Lord, but as it were, foolishly." (2
Corinthians 11:17). But God does not speak
foolishly. (Continued).

Cancer Saga- I was amused reading my own obituary-- Gov Chime

•Says it's Nsukka's turn to be gov in 2015
AS he strode to a more relaxing seat from the
exalted one where he signs the executive
decisions that run Enugu State, Governor Sullivan
Iheanacho Chime set the mood for the interview
at the Lion Building, Enugu, his official quarters.
He sat just a metre away. Our feet could have
been touching if he did not cross his in a regal
posture that he varied as the interview ran. His
towering presence made one instantly think of a
basketball professional in other climes. He was
snug. He seemed to have put aside the trappings
of office for the thrills of this encounter.
The handshake was firm, not beyond a clench that
could have suggested bellicosity. He was in high
spirits, discussing his health with unpractised
frankness. "I was amused reading the reports
about me, especially the several obituaries," he
said, as he went on talking about his recovery.
A long queue of guests was waiting for him. He
was to conclude the day's business by 4am and
was back at work after a few hours' sleep. It is a
routine he maintains. Enugu, the challenges of re-
inventing a 101-year-old city, and his joy at the
opening of the Akanu Ibiam International Airport
radiated as he accounted for his six years in
office.
With two years to the end of his administration,
Governor Chime talked as if he was writing his
handing over notes. He bantered and countered
as we talked Enugu politics, the opposition andhis
position on 2015 and the race to succeed him.
"It may be interesting to know if those who
opposed the building of the mall at Polo Park are
not among the regular shoppers," he joked
about the fiery army of opposition, whose voices
are drowning in the flood of plaudits over his
performance.
A lawyer by training, but a practical politician
dedicated to the people, he said the matter of
Nsukka (Enugu North) producing the next
governor was not a promise, but an agreement
that equity and justice support. "It did not have to
be written, such things are never written," he said.
What follows is Governor Chime, mostly in his
own words…
2015 For Nsukka
The issue of Nsukka producing the governor in
2015, it is actually Enugu North senatorial district
– let me make the clarification before some think I
mean Nsukka town – has evolved. Some are
contesting it; some claim there is no agreement
to that effect. I think it is more than an
agreement. It is a promise that evolved from an
understanding we have about peaceful
transitions in the State.
A bit of the background could help in establishing
that the matter has gone beyond promise,
agreement to a case of equity and justice. In
1999, the contest for the governorship was open
to all the zones. Governor Chimaroke Nnamani
won and did a second term. In 2007, it was open
again. Aspirants from all the zones participated, I
won. By 2011, most candidates withdrew from the
contest because of the enormous support that I
had. The real players in Enugu North said it made
sense for me to complete two terms.
Gov. Chime
The traditional rulers, in particular, told
contestants from Enugu North that they would
not get support; it was a sort of disclaimer.
Nobody from the North contested in our party
(PDP), but other parties fielded candidates. What I
did at the town hall meeting was to re-echo what
we all knew. Nobody writes such things as
agreements. The most important aspect of it is
the matter of equity and justice that is involved.
Governors from 1999 to date are from Enugu East
and Enugu West senatorial districts. By the time I
complete my second term, Enugu East and Enugu
West would have occupied the position for 16
years. Is any argument required for anyone to
know that equity and justice demand that the
next governor should be from Enugu North? I
went into these details to prove that we have an
agreement, a gentleman's agreement; it is an
understanding, one that would work best for the
interest of our State and its peoples.
The Next Two Years
We have spent these years laying the foundations
for future governments. They have to take a cue
from where we stop. There is a blue print for
developing the State. It is not about individuals, it
is not centred on me as the governor. It is about
the people, it is about projects that would benefit
the people. I am not naming anything after
myself. We are doing all we can to complete all
projects. We would not burden the incoming
administration with uncompleted projects. The
next two years would be used in completing
projects that would firm up the foundations we
laid.
Key Projects
We have done many road projects and we are
continuing. We are opening up the State, making
it easier for people to move around as they
explore the investment opportunities we are
creating. We have also constructed roads that
have shortened distances between parts of the
State. The one from Abakpa Nike to Nsukka is
almost finished. Once completed, the journey
from Enugu to Nsukka town would be under 30
minutes, making Nsukka closer to Enugu than
some parts of Enugu. We have done more roads
in Enugu North than in Enugu East.
When we were building the mall, people criticised
it, the same way they criticised other projects. It
may be interesting to know if those who opposed
the building of the mall at Polo Park are not
among the regular shoppers. An industrial park is
being built, the state secretariat is under
construction. We pulled down the buildings that
had no character. Some of the ones left date
back to 1928, but they were built with stone. We
are leaving them for their historical importance,
again they are strong. In those cases we are
renovating them.
Like the mall in Polo Park, those who screamed
when we were pulling down the old structures at
the secretariat, are among those amazed at the
new structures replacing them. We are building a
new government house. All these would be
completed before we leave. Others areas that
have engaged our attention are agriculture,
education, industrialisation, job creation and
empowerment of our people.
Diagnostic Centre
One of the earliest projects that this
administration started was a diagnostic centre. It
would have been commissioned before the
completion of my first term. Things went wrong
with the construction. We had to pull down the
building and start again. We are aware that no
modern city can operate without sound medical
facilities. I know that some would think that we
are constructing the centre because of my illness,
it was conceived and was being built before I fell
ill last year.
New Enugu, Centenary City
The Centenary City to mark 100 years of Nigeria is
under construction. We have a Workers' Village
too in addition to some housing estates that
investors are building. These are expanding the
city. We are changing the look of the city. The
changes are more profound than people
think. The projects we have executed have
changed Enugu from a civil service city to
investors' hub.
Government is supporting investors with the
provision of infrastructure. The road networks
that we have established have made access to the
new parts of the city easier. We have revoked
lands allocated to some who have become
speculators. There are allocations that some
people got 20 to 30 years ago and failed to
develop them. We have revoked and re-allocated
them. The move has resulted in people utilising
their allocations.
Financing Projects
Resources to execute our projects have been a
major challenge. We refrain from borrowing as
much as possible. What we have been doing is
prudent management of the resources we get
from the federation account. We operate within
our resources. We have also improved our
internally generated revenue.
How Airport Would Help Enugu
The impact of the airport would not be limited to
Enugu State. It would impact on businesses in the
South East and beyond. Travellers and business
people that find the airport in Enugu nearer to
them would use it. So we are in a situation where
people in Delta, other South South States and the
North Central would use the airport.
Gov Chime
We are confident that the impact would be great.
The airport would facilitate businesses and we
expect that as it grows and schedules include
other parts of the world, Enugu would be the
major hub in this part of the country with a
spread of services that would benefit other
areas. The impact of an airport therefore cannot
be limited, the uses that result from its presence
would show and soon the impact would be
obvious with the attendant multiplier effects of
having such an important facility here.
Security Issues
Enugu is rated the safest State in Nigeria. The
Inspector General of Police, Mohammed
Abubakar said so. We are still improving our
security. People arriving Enugu for business or
pleasure should harbour no fears. We are
assisting the police in the construction of facilities
for their air wing at the airport. It was one of the
issues we settled with the Inspector General of
Police during a visit to Enugu. The facility would
be in use before the end of the year. It would be
used for air surveillance of the South East zone.
Investors' Hub
We call this city an investors' hub and the facilities
are rising to meet the challenges. The
international airport (that was formally opened
yesterday) is part of the main infrastructure that
would facilitate the realisation of this ambition.
We are also looking forward to the rails being
resuscitated.
Our administration would help with the
provision of land. The issues of tax holidays are
determined in Abuja but we would offer any
assistance that we can. We have secured a
licence for our own cement company. We are
working with Lafarge on the project. The State
has proven reserves of limestone for the cement
factory.
Challenges From Electricity, Water
We still have challenges with water. We are
tackling them. Electricity is another area of
interest for us. We have several offers that are
tied to the natural resources we have. The
abundant reserves of gas in Ugwuoba and coal in
Amansi-Odo would serve the electricity projects
well.
His Health
I am fine. I am not sick. I attend public functions.
Some people insist on drawing their own
conclusions. What I went through was millions of
miles away from what people thought. A routine
medical check revealed cancer cells, but they were
benign. Since they were discovered early, they
were nipped. They had not spread. It was nothing
serious and the technology for the treatment was
available.
The treatment (chemotherapy) was harsh. It is
not something that I can describe, but I am
grateful to God that I went through it
successfully. I am recovering from the
treatment. Itaffected my normal cells; they are
re-growing. Doctors predicted that recovery
would take up to a year that is time for the
effects of the treatment to wear off.
I was reading all the stories about me. I was
amused reading the reports about me, especially
the several obituaries. I still required regular
check-ups for evaluation of the progress of the
cell, the re-growth. The regular checks were in
March, May and June. I needed evaluation every
six weeks. The most recent evaluation showed
no signs of affected cells. I would be there again
on August 30. I believe that I would not require
frequent checks after that.
Next Governor's Agenda
I cannot impose any agenda on the next
administration, but I do not think the
administration would have much choice than
following the blue print. We have taken the State
to the pointwhere it makes sense for future
governments to continue in similar directions.
The next governor would have his priorities. His
greatest challenge would be when he deviates
from programmes that would benefit the people.
He would have the people to contend with not
me, that is why I say that the choices available to
future governments are limited to providing
services to the people. All we have done are for
the people, who have learnt that government is
meant to serve them. Anyone who acts to the
contrary would answer to the people, not me.

Drug Abuse: Is Marijuana Harmful? Marijuana, ordinarily, is a weed. The dried leaves, flowering tops and stems, which can be used as a drug because of the curative properties are wrapped into cigarettes form and often smoked by people.

Cannabis is the plant yielding the marijuana
leaves. It's name is derived from Latin
American Spanish. Historically, Marijuana
came into Nigeria after the first and second
world wars when Nigerians were conscipted to
fight on the sides of Britain. Some of the
soldiers on their return from Burma and
North African military campaigns brought the
weeds home. Marijuana Initially, Marijuana
had several local names apart from the
popular one – Indian Hemp.
It used to be called "Morocco,""Igboo,"
"Ganja", "Smoke", "Grass","Weewee", "Stone"
etc. Because of its attribution to "mental
disorder", the authorities criminalised the
smoking of Marijuana as anyone found in
possession of it, or caught smoking is liable to
be sentenced to six months in prison without
option of fine. That was the situation until the
military intervention on January 15, 1966,
when the army took over from elected civilian
government.
However, it was the military government of
Yakubu Gowon who changed the punishment
for smoking and possessing Indian Hemp
from six months to 10 years imprisonment,
thus making people to be aware that
Marijuana was dangerous and could be the
cause of violent crimes in the society.
This led to the police getting more returns
from those caught smoking the weed at
different joints and homes across the country.
However when the Gowon regime was
overthrown, the new military government of
Maj-Gen Murtala Muhammed saw no reason
for the long jail term for Indian hemp offences
and therefore repelled that law, reverting the
punishment to six months prison term.
This was received by the people with a sigh of
relief. The sentence for marijuana possession
had remained soft and flexible till the coming
of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency,
NDLEA, which introduced stiff penalties for
offenders and other serious drugs like
cocaine, heroin, etc.
Marijuana has been found not to be harmful
nor addictive and people need not be afraid of
its usage, although it can make the smoker
"high", and operating in another thought-level.
There are research studies indicating the
medicinal, herbal, healing and curative
qualities of marijuana. In some states in
America, there is what is called "Medical
Marijuana"which could be legally used with
doctor's prescription.
Doctors can prescribe marijuana for some
ailments like epilepsy which has no cure,
except by marijuana. Even children of two
years and above are given "edible
marijuana"for cure of epilepsy which has been
very effective to control the frequent seizures.
So the recreational and medicinal use of
marijuana are now gaining ground in USA.
Governor Christie of New Jersey is sending a
bill to the state legislature to legalise use of
marijuana for medical purposes.
Edible marijuana administered to a 2-year old
child suffering from epilepsy has worked
perfectly well with the child fully cured and
seizures reduced from 100 a day now to zero.

An open Letter to olamide from a Fan

I am a fan of yours and I have
followed your growth from the days with Id
Cabasa and the Coded Tunes crew, to your
days under Toni Payne's management. Parting
ways with her was quite risky but I felt it was a
move worth making as you needed a fully
dedicated management to grow your career.
That move paid off and you're now better off
for it. Pitching your tent with 1805
Entertainment, your immense talent and the
void left by Dagrin's demise meant only one
thing – A top spot for you! I am glad you fit in
perfectly. A bolder move to start YBNL Nation
and you going ahead to drop your second
album on the YBNL Nation/1805
Entertainment imprint was another risky move
that still paid off. At that point, I knew the "god
of music" was behind you. Though it wasn't so
surprising to see the street embrace the
album cos of it quality street wise content, the
rate at which the "butties" accepted you too
was alarming. People preached the YBNL
gospel and gladly talked about how good the
album was. Even my cool friend Barr. Fola
Alade became an advocate of "Razz being the
new Cool", no thanks to you. But while we
where enjoying Jale, Street Love, Jesu O kola,
Stupid Love, First of All, Ilefo Illuminati
amongst other beautiful songs, dear Olamide,
you unconsciously killed the album! Yes, you
unfortunately killed it by releasing too many
materials not so long after the album dropped
and you shifted our attention off the album.
To make matters worse, some of these songs
were not half as good as the songs on the
album and they also were not well promoted,
Confession, Tonto Dike, Baddest Nigga That
ever liveth, e.t.c. Needless to say that some
were also really good, cos some of us still
have Turn Up and Durosoke topping our
playlists. Baddo, have you heard of the point
of equilibrium? That's the point when the law
of diminishing return sets in. It happens to
everything and everyone. In simple terms, it's
the point where you get to the peak, have
nothing to extra to offer and the drop starts.
To some, the drop might not be deep while to
some, they would never rise to that point
again. Unfortunately, this happens a lot in the
music industry. While we agree that you are
HOT at this moment and the inspiration is
much, brother, please do not wear yourself
out. Ma le ara e ni ere. Truth is when you
saturate the market with too many materials,
we get tired easily, we don't pay full attention
to them and the songs end up not getting as
much love as they should. Keep recording,
keep saving them in the cloud and don't push
too many songs within a short period. Let the
fans yearn for more, let us savour the
goodness of some of what you already have.
On a final note, I love the way your personality
is gradually evolving 'cos building a brand of
yourself should be beyond your music. I
foresee a near future where corporate brands
that want to connect with the streets would
come to you, simply because you are the link
between the streets and the corporate world.

Crude oil rushes out of tap in a village in Kogi state

A well in a compound which is located 30 meters
from the Nigerian National Petroleum
Corporation pipeline in Gegu, Koton Karafi Local
Government area of Kogi State, has been
discovered to be filled with crude oil.
Reports reveal that some overhead tanks
belonging to one Alhaji Suleiman Mohammed
who owns a pure water factory in the area was
also filled with crude oil.
Alhaji Suleiman however revealed that he woke
up and discovered that all his overhead tanks
were filled with crude oil.
Eyewitness at the area revealed that residents had
lined up to fetch water when crude oil started
gushing out of the tap. Residents were said to
have started struggling to fetch the crude oil
before the police stormed the area.
Assistant Commissioner of Police, Friday Ibadin,
who is in-charge of the taskforce, said on August
22, 2013, he got an intelligence report that some
individuals were carting away gallons of crude oil
from a village in Kogi state.
He said, "Policemen led by Kogi Sector
Commander, Dawn Eremie, stormed the premises
and discovered a well filled with crude oil as well
as empty kegs littered in the compound. The
owner of the house disappeared while his wife
who was met compound claimed that they
discovered that their well was filled with crude oil.
She admitted that they made attempts to scoop
the oil in a bid to get clean water for domestic
use.

Its untrue that I have Another Kid --- Saheed Balogun

The Yoruba people have a proverb that says 'A kii
ka omo f'olomo'. This literally means that it is
culturally wrong to say in the public the number
of children a person has.
While it may not be too difficult to understand the
sentiment the elders are trying to play up through
the adage, modernity has since laid the wisdom in
it to rest.
Nowadays, 'modern people' do not even wait for
an outsider to count their children for them. They
do so themselves. Apart from the fact that you
have to officially declare the number of children
you have on certain occasions, many people,
following what obtains in the western tradition,
are eager to 'broadcast live' not only the number
of kids they have, they also take to the social
media to announce to the world as soon as they
get pregnant. And seconds after the baby is born,
its picture is already everywhere.
Popular Yoruba actor, Saidi Balogun, says he
neither grumbles with tradition nor in any way
tries to resist the influence of civilisation. But he
adds that he detests something: the idea of
people carrying rumours about his family status.
Indeed, he is currently angry with some of
Nigerian bloggers who, he notes, are fond of
publishing false stories about celebrities.
"Recently, the bloggers said I had another child
from one woman. This is not true, and none of
them bothered to call me to verify whether or not
it was true."
The actor/producer, who recently premiered a
new movie - You or I - was spotted at Shoprite, in
Ikeja Mall on Sunday, where he went to shop
alongside his children. On sighting the fair-
complexioned actor, it was natural for the
correspondent to look out for probably a woman
- other than Balogun's estranged wife, Fatiha -
who could be carrying a baby, based on the
rumour that filtered through the Internet recently.
"This is me, and this is my family," he said.
"Although one cannot stop any blogger from
doing his or her work, it is also good to respect
the dignity of other people, and to respect the
rules of journalism too. How can someone just go
and hide in one corner and say anything he likes
in his or her blog?"
He declined further comments on the domestic
end as, according to him, many people tend to
misinterpret utterances of celebrities too easily.
On his romance with Ibadan - he is said to have
recently been seen with Governor Abiola Ajimobi
of Oyo State - Balogun explained that he only
'returned home' because of what he has observed
in Ibadan.
"There we go again o!" he said jovially. "The fact is
that I am a native of Ibadan. I am from the
Kobomoje area of the city. I am part of the family
of Chief Lekan Balogun, who was murdered some
years back. What happened is that when I visited
Ibadan recently, I noticed that the city has
changed. Many of the major roads are now free
and the dirt that used to litter everywhere has
disappeared. Grasses and flowers have also
surfaced in different places, like you have in parts
of Lagos. So, as an indigene, I felt somehow
inspired and decided to express this to the
governor."
On the way some showbiz stars now patronise
government quarters, he noted that what
mattered was the intention, while adding that,
that one is an artiste does not mean he does not
have anything to contribute to governance.

BBA: Who wins USD300,000 prize money?

After 91 days of unstoppable fun and drama, the
stage is set again to crown a winner as the grand
finale of the Big Brother Africa-The Chase reality
TV show holds this Sunday, in South Africa.
Two Nigeria's representatives, Beverley and
Melvin are among the five Housemates who will
be contending for the USD300,000 prize money.
Beverley and Melvin made it to the final after
Ethiopia's Bimp and South Africa's Angelo were
evicted during last Sunday's live eviction show.
Their departure leaves Beverley, Melvin, Cleo,
Dillish and Elikem in contention for the USD300
000 prize. This year's edition has been punctuated
with lots of intrigues, drama and sex.
Nonetheless, it has been fun all the way.
*BBA finalists
Some viewers have opined that the battle is
between Melvin and Cleo, while many others
tipped Melvin or Beverly. However, as it stands, it
could be anyone's money.
South Africa's Angelo became the 22nd
housemate to be evicted, bringing an end to the
final couple in the House – Bengelo. It has been
an unpredictable season with some of the
promising characters and entertaining
personalities crashing out of the game before
they could say BBA.
Meanwhile, with the intrigues that pervade the
show this year, whoever wins tomorrow will evoke
no reaction. Africa seems to be rooting for Melvin
or Elikem . The end will definitely justify the
means!

FG not ready to end strike – ASUU

After 10 unsuccessful meetings with the
Federal Government, the Academic Staff Union of
Universities, ASUU, yesterday said government
was not ready to end the 8-week-old strike,
lamenting that government displayed dishonesty
and lack of integrity during negotiations.
At a briefing in Lagos, ASUU's President, Dr. Isa
Faggae, claimed that government had declared it
would not implement the agreed injection of
funds to revitalise the public universities, but was
only making a dubious statement of supporting
some universities with N100 billion.
He said: "Government had also declared that it
will not pay university academics their earned
allowances which accumulated from 2009 to 2013.
Rather, it is talking about providing N30 billion to
assist various Governing Councils of Federal
Universities to defray the arrears of N92 billion
owed to all categories of staff in the university
system."
Narrating the union's experience at the last
meeting with the Government held on Monday,
Faggae said: ASUU was shocked by the level of
deceit, dishonesty, and lack of integrity displayed
by the Government. Never in the history of ASUU-
Government relations have we, as a union, ever
experienced the kind of volte-face exhibited by
Government. At one stage in the interaction, the
Secretary to the Government Federation ridiculed
the agreement, the MoU and the Needs
Assessment Report, mocking the Minister of
Education to "go and give them N400 billion," at
which members of the government scornfully
laughed."
He argued that the Governor Gabriel Suswam-led
Implementation Committee was being used as
smokescreen to "deceive ASUU, Nigerian students
and their parents, as well as other unsuspecting
members of the public on the purportedly
released N100 billion for the implementation of
the Needs Assessment Report.
First, he said, government plans to divert the
regular yearly allocations to universities by
Tertiary Education Trust, TETFund, to make at
least 70% of the N100 billion. This is unacceptable
to ASUU. It is like robbing Peter to pay Paul, since
the idea of revitalization took full cognizance of
the intervention role TETFund ab-initio.
"Again, contrary to subsisting operational
procedures, about 75% of the money meant for
revitalizing universities would not be released to
them as the Suswam Committee plans to hand
over construction of the hostel projects to the
Federal Ministry of Education and/or the National
Universities Commission, for implementation.
This is illegal; neither the ministry nor NUC is
backed by laws of Nigerian Public Universities to
divert monies meant for the development of these
institutions into centrally executed projects."
Dr. Faggae questioned the committee's motives
for proposing to commit N1.6 million to a bed
space, instead of N200, 000 to N400, 000, saying,
"We see a continuation of outrageous contract
regimes in the plan to centrally coordinate the
construction of student hostels as done in the
case of the 12 newly established Federal
Universities with TETFund resources. The NUC has
transmuted itself into a "Tenders' board" which
awarded contracts for the construction of 560 bed
spaces hostel for each university at a whooping
sum of 1.2 bn. This contract sum translates into
N2.143 million per bed space.
